it almost certainly does, serial ports are bog standard
devices
DrNick, Ok, thanks. The add on Ebay said it works with linux,
but i could'nt find any details.
DrNick, But its known to work with dos, so I guess it will work
with linux.
f00bar`, if you using wget and server host is support
resuming, you can use -c swith to resume
if i use torrent, how long will it take on a 2mb connection
boncos, im downloading it on windows, to setup on my server
because something works with dos it works with linux? what
logic is that?
f00bar`, i got 2Mbps with torrent on 10M connection
I asked before, but ISP in yoyo mode. on F7, "yum update"
errors out with: "Missing Dependency: mkinitrd = 6.0.9-7.1 is
needed by package kernel".
there's always DOSBox
jimw, yes yes we know
we told already, havent you ?
jimw, chill out, grab a beer, it will fix itself
Eliran_Itzhak, why pci? and not usb? for rs232 pci is
overkill
Thanks. I'll wait.
I'm sure you did, but exactly at the point Bellsouth decided to
drop me.
jimw, if you are yumaniac in the mean time do a yum update
--exclude kernel to get the other updates
If you must update, do yum update --exclude=kernel\*
greenfish, I have 3 rs232 modems. i could use usb2rs232, but
why bother (and risk problems) ?
er, yeah, sans =
Gotcha. I'll probably just wait
jimw, the mkinitrd was in updates-testing.. it was moved over
to updates just recently today
Grummus, , I have 3 rs232 modems. i could use usb2rs232, but
why bother (and risk problems) ?
jimw, you can enable updates-testing to get the mkinitrd if
your mirrors havent moved it into updates yet
or try yum clean metadata, then yum update again
i can't add the user switcher applet
i got it in my updates
i know, it's petty, but i thought it was pretty cool
psychological block?
now that you mention it, I can't either.
hum.
oh right that's because I bypassed gdm
hi, which fedora 7 should i download? LIVE or just x86_64? what
is LIVE?
that is the live cd
it's a live CD
it's ALIVE!
LIVE means doesn't install and runs real slow.
zzzoid, live .. can boot from cd
ah, i got it thanks
jimw, ?
It's a live CD.
you can install from the live too though
also is there a reason i should use i386 on a core
2?
because you want to run 32-bit?
ok, but if i have the source i can just recompile for 64bit
right?
or... you could install the 64 bit release
zzzoid, if your going to recompile use gentoo
yes, using cross compile hosting
AFAIK
ok, i'll use 64 and just hope that some nice chap has already
built the software for me
okay
He has. It's called a 'distribution' and this one is called
'Fedora'
Blinny, use words we understand, please.
Sorry...
'advanced abacus'?
Blinny, yeah but not every piece of software in the linux hosting world is in
that distro
how to make fedora use icewm (compiled & installed) instead
of KDE/GNOME?
shramanad, kill metacity and run icewm?
zzzoid, we want every piece of software to be on Fedora.
ferrum, how?
killall metacity
ferrum, i like that, nice.
icewm
hey, uhm... i'm trying to convert some of my xen domU's to f7
from f6.. anyway, when it reboots it says it can't find the
filesystem.. if i use the /xen/vmlinuz-2.6.20-2925.9.fc7xen kernel,
if i use my old /xen/vmlinuz-2.6.16.29-xen kernel, it works
fine
zzzoid, the only thing we need are people to create and maintain
packages If you find some software that we don't have yet, you
could request it / offer to maintain.
am i missing some option in the config?
ferrum, will do, thanks
Missing Dependency: mkinitrd = 6.0.9-7.1 is needed by package
kernel"
Hanabi, we know. yum update --exclude=kernel\*
I figured that had been mentioned before!
Thanks, ferrum
hi, is the best
hosting way to install the proprietary nvidia drivers to use,
say lynx , and get them from the nvida site? Is there a better
way?
SpinachHead, install the Livna repository then install through
yum.
Are the livna nvidia driver compatible with the 8800GTX?
speaking of drivers any word on when the ati drivers are
coming
*Is
SpinachHead,
http://www.fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/nvidia-yum-livna/?searchterm=nvidia
hello
for net install cd
x86-64
what mirror do i choose ?
the one closest to you
must i write it down ? cuz ther was no list with mirrors
?
i used boot.iso
ferrum is ftp.belnet.be/linux/fedora/linux good as http mirror
?
well it's ftp, but it is a valid mirror.
ferrum, but the one closest to me is using a 2400 baud
modem
|DrJef|, then there is no hope for you ;_;
LOL
ferrum, i have a server in orbit that communicates with
line-of-site laser bursts... not closest but its faster
ferrum, when its not cloudy
the latency must suck
Where do the sharks live then?
for those not in the know, he's being completely serious
Fairbanks, AK is on the ass end of civilization
DrNick, not completely serious
Obviously you've never been to Newark.
Blinny, i moved from NJ :-
heh
aww, I wanted my memories of hating Fairbanks to be
reinforced
DrNick, there are 2 or 3 fiber trunks out of town its not so
bad.. now that I'm at the U.
I remember getting the train into Newark.. It was like
something out of Terminator. There were steaming/burning piles of
black shit like coal or dirt or something. Everything was covered
in soot. Dead cars and equipment were just laying around.. it was
eerie.
DrNick, the day when all the fiber was cut south of here..was
glorious
how can i tell the current resolution that i am in?
Squint.
Does the Livna nVidia driver support the 8800GTX?
he he
i've had the EXACT same experience there on the path
Blinny, newark is nyc's curb
Let's hope we don't make that fate.
if the us had a "slum capital" ..newark would be it.
is fedora optimized for 386 or 586 and above?
I do System-Preferences-Screen Resolution
zodiac, i think camden is worse
it's optimized for "current processors" (i.e.
-mtune=generic)
-- used to live in randolph twp
zodiac, newark is a well organized and vibrant dump
|DrJef|, I spent a week in Camden. ++
zodiac, camden is just burnout completely
Perhaps the package version together with the NVidia website
will give you a hint
i'm in kde and i was thinking about something via the
terminal
taking nj transit in the city was 28$ one way last time i was
there ... probably $50 now
Dunno.
no worries ... i'll figure it out soon enough
You can check the first resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
?
what package contains re2c?
cant find it :/
DrNick, so what your saying is.. i should never tell a mental
health care professional that i actually like it here?
rimad, "yum provides re2c"
in the 'Modes' of 'Display' subsection of 'Screen'
section
to each his own
rpm -q --whatprovides `whereis re2c | cut -f 2 -d ' '`
No Matches found
holy crap is the live cd installer fast
Depends on what kind of drugs you're hoping to score.
yum provides /*re2c
DrNick, the local newcasts are....quiant
and if you're a fan of perpetual darkness interspersed with a
weed season and human excrement on the sides of the roads, then,
ok!
whereis re2c ? dude if i had re2c i wouldnt be searching for
it
rimad, go to http://pbone.net and
search for it always works for me
rimad, oh I thought you were just looking for the package name.
Use the yum thing.
i wonder why is yum not matching anything :/
rimad, go to pbone
DrNick, haven't run into the poop yet
DrNick, when was the last time you were here?
uh
peters-tx, just did, it's not listing any fc7
packages...
1999, I think
or maybe 98
where do you live?
DrNick, the east side of town looks like another piece of
jersey... big box retail has taken over
rimad, try all packages to see what the package name is at
least
rimad, err ALL distros
DrNick, they've even got a god damn old navy store
are pull tabs still the primary subject of bill board
advertisements?
its not listing any fedora packages
wtf
DrNick, bill boards?
you know, large signs
DrNick, i dont think there are stand alone billboards here
now... just store signage
DrNick, so pulltabs adverts are just at the location where the
pulltabs actually are
DrNick, so nothing egregious really...
if I were trying to find a list of directories that were
modified less than 100 days ago, would it be 'find -type d -mtime
-100' ?
DrNick, there's even serious plans on the table to re-develop
the downtown area
...that sounds about right...
xkahn, thanks,
ever eaten at El Sombrero?
DrNick, nope... i keep meaning to.. they have the pulltabs
license for the curling club
I'm going to warn you right now, no Mexican has ever been
that far north
DrNick, they just built a new gallo's which im assuming is a
mexican chain... i eat there
DrNick, and i've confirmed that they have at least spanish
speaking busboy staff :-
wow, that's an improvement
wait, Gallos or El Sombrero?
DrNick, gallos
oh
roosters ?
DrNick, its barely frontier-ish now....
DrNick, it reminds me of western NC in terms of overall
attitude
roosters and hats ... hmmm
heh. barely frontierish. tell that to my uncle
of course, he's somewhere north of Fox on the Steese
Highway
DrNick, that...is still the frontier
DrNick, but the silver gulch brewery just re-opened this summer as
a upscale brewpub
DrNick, with a swanky dining area and bar
DrNick, in Fox!
can you do a kickstart + http install off the rescue cd?
how do i enable the bootsplash screen?
add "rhgb" to the grub entry
what if it's already there
odla, boot into runlevel 5
how do i change that?
5 is the default
/etc/inittab
add a "5" to the end
" 5"
to menu.lst?
yep
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
5
yup that's what i got
Hi people, I have a problem with the installation of Fedora 7 in
my computer, the problem is with my SATA hard disk
heh, i was just beginning to type that, edgarin
are you in?
me too
it can't see my partitions
maploin, wow!, now are 2 person with the same problem :'(
ideas?
i just noticed that fdisk -l shows everything correctly
cool, now the install application won't start
nope that didn't work :/ ... also i can't seem to get
915resolution to work and for some reason there's no
manpage?!?
hello all. I am trying to install courier-authlib and it keeps
failing. http://pastebin.ca/567047
what is the cli tool to change fedora 4 firewall
settings?
does fedora use bootsplash or splashy ?
odla, no and no
duffolonious, system-config-securitylevel-tui but it's not very
powerfull
what is it then?
FC4? That's end of life.
warning: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages ,
any idea?
yum update running in the background?
no
rhgb
strange it wasn't installed by default
no
"it?"
ah ... you just referred to rhgb and i was 'it' wasn't
installed by default
oops i said
It is if you install a graphical desktop
wel i installed kde and it wasn't
thanks, that did what I needed.
i installed via the kde live cd
odla, rpm -q rhgb
no idea bout kde
i just installed it now
I'm sure it is, but I can't change it now
odla, then its an issue with the kde livecd
ok
odla, probably want to file a feature suggestion to get it
included if they dont know about it already
does anyone know how to get the 915resolution package
working? i'm at 1024x768 when i should be at 1280x800 ... for some
reason i can't run 915resolution
msi quirk detected msi deactivada
this message say in the process of installation
hello all. I am trying to install courier-authlib and it keeps
failing. http://pastebin.ca/567047
strange ... /usr/sbin/ isn't in the PATH for root ... how
would i add that?
command not found
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after
switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's
command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by
itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in
a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod
a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it
incorrectly.
read ^
oh ...
what do i need for gprs internet connection?
any reason for that?
You can have an effective user of root without having root's
environment, including PATH
odla, sometimes you want to keep your original user's
environment, without rewriting it with ROOT's...
ok ... also do you know how i could invoke 915resolution at
every boot?
so is there any place where i can find an answer to my
"installer can't recognise partitions"?
ok i think i got it figure out we'll see
maploin, what partitons does it see
nothing
it says it can't read the partitions
partition table actually
does it even see the drive
yup
as /dev/sda
hmm, what's a good 'screenshot to clipboard' app in linux?
is there one?
so what partitions are on the drive
and i can see everything perfect with fdisk -l
I guess there's ksnapshot, but what's the alternative for gnome
users?
a bunch of ext3s and reiserfs
Can anyone tell me whats this error? child pid exit signal
segmentation fault (11) I'm getting this on the logs when i trey to
use the console to admin the fedora directory server
well reiserfs and selinux do not play together
so if i turn off selinux it'll work?
invalid memory reference. see
man 7 signal
hrm ... no splash screen still
woohoo segmentation fault from system-config-selinux
can i run yahoo messenger or any windows based program with xine
?
which is the best aplication to backup an enterprise
Network(servers).. i have been using "AMANDA", is any ther good
option ?
odla, does your kernel boot parameter's include rhgb?
BuRneR`: xine is a media player
wine
sorry
oh, well there's a list of windows applications and how well
they work on their site
ok
thank you
you're welcome
yes
odla, does /etc/sysconfig/init have GRAPHICAL=yes
odla, and you are booting into runlevel 5 ?
yes and yes
hellow again,
i think fedora its installer has a weakness
odla, then im not sure why you arent see it activate
one that i cant continue from
MegaR0M, all super heros have a weakness
it says opening */.*.rpm failed
during installation procedure
MegaR0M, which installation medium are you using?
heroes ... great
netinstall
MegaR0M, well.. uhm....
MegaR0M, are you sure you did the server and directory location
correctly?
net install !
MegaR0M, which protocal?
MegaR0M, http?
how e'lse would it continue into installing if it wasnt right
?
ftp
why isnt ther a list with servers on the netinstaller alike
debian does ?
MegaR0M, if you are using the normal install medium.. like
the i686 dvd image... then the installer only needs to go out to
the network to grab packages
thats kinda an annoying weakness
having to write down the server host
addr
MegaR0M, i would never advise doing a network install over
the public network
im using boot.iso 7mb ... all from web
MegaR0M, for the simple reason that network interruptions
during the install process...are problematic
hmm
it always worked with debian :$
MegaR0M, thats great
|DrJef| what iso do u advise me to take for x86 i386 xor ppc ps3
?
i want to test three arches
MegaR0M, im sure statistically... that your experience can be
extrapolated into a general situation that covers all potential
gotchas
MegaR0M, you want to do what?
this seems to be a bit of a mess ... the splash isn't working,
my fonts are very ugly (which i think is do to 915resolution not
working properly), and my kde sessions are all messed up
gonne get pita
cheers
odla, ive never done an install from the kde livecd
odla, so i cant comment
|DrJef| what iso should i leech myLord ?
MegaR0M, uhm since all i have locally is x86
machines.....
lol
Southern_Gentlem, that was last weekend..after the wisdom teeth
surgery
lol
what's a good irc client for lin?
so what compilation should i download to install fedora ?
irrc
bitchx
xchat
MegaR0M, if you just want to try it out... get the gnome
livecd
pretty sure there was some reason i didn't like xchat or
bitchx
pidgin
MegaR0M, but i dont think thats available for ppc
it's not.
fedora equals lame installers :$
peace
MegaR0M, wrong.. fedora can't ship lame... patent issues
and all this time I thought it was a kind of hat
anyone know a decent gqview alternative?
you are going to have to qualify 'decent' a little
better
something similar to gqview I guess I mean
damn, there is absolutely no re2c for fedora
umm, kview?
perfect. thanks.
ah, cool, yw
does anyone know a good program for erasing free /slack space on
ext3 ?
what on earth for?
slack space? you mean securely deleting files?
so what should my menu.lst file look like?
for rhgb to work
depends on what you want to do with it
no, space which is marked as deleted, e.g old files which
have not been overwriteen by anything else
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
that's what i got now
so what's the problem?
rhgb doesn't work
it won't load
so remove rhgb quiet
Yeah that means 'securely deleting files'.
oh ... removing that will make rhgb work?
Basically, overwriting the two bits with 00, 01, 10, 11 and
then 00 again
no it wont call for it
And, then answer to the question is: No, I don't know of a
package that does that. (:
i want it to call for it
get rid of rhgb
Be pretty easy to write though.
it just doesn't load
odla you said it doesnt
odla, don't waste your time getting rhgb to work.. just disable
it.
work so get rid of it so you can find out what else doesnt
work
removing rhgb from that line will disable it.. it's a waste
anyway!
yes securley deleting, but files which are already unsecurely
deleted..
I do see wipe.sf.net
im sure if it was easy to write it would be already:P?
spose you could just dd if=/dev/random or something to a file
till you almost fill up your disk, rinse repeat.
Mathman, that's a terrible idea.
my microphone is not receiving, how do I handle that?
yellowled2k, also look at a product called autopsy its a
computer forenics program that will show you all the deleted files
that have not been overwritten yet
ha, thanks!
A good discussion: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=346789
there are a few old utlis but dont work on ext3 i heard
hi, on f7 machine, at "starting udev," it says "kernel panic
- not syncing: out of memory and no killable processes"
what to do?
will look at that article and autopsy program
wow evo-mail-notification really freaks out when you put your
notices in the popup stack
at least when you have 200 new messages
is anyone else seeing the issue where the mixer settings are not
persisting after a reboot?
I'm looking for assistance repackaging an install CD to include
an extra custom package. The Anaconda wiki hosting is
almost but not quite entirely uninformative.
i need simple network indicator in taskbar (speed, total r/t).
how to set up on in GNOME/KDE?
shramanad, right click on a gnome panel and select to add the
network monitor
i actually just use system monitor with the networking monitoring
enabled
does it provide totals?
no the sys monitor one
let me check the others
shramanad, the Network Monitor applet does
in KDE you can use the KSysGuard panel applet, or you can
install KNemo
daMaestro, please help
or you can use any of several dozen superkaramba themes that
do it
daMaestro, wolsni, thanks
Arfdee, ?
hello
any one use wireshark ?
Can anybody here reproduce bug #244271 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=244271
I have problem with compiling it ,I have libcap-devel package
installed but there is not pcap.h header file found ,any ideas
?
help please
daMaestro,
hi, on f7 machine, at "starting udev," it says "kernel panic -
not syncing: out of memory and no killable processes"
why are you compiling wireshark?
Arfdee, hmm and how much RAM do you have?
Arfdee, did you setup swap?
)
fair enough
daMaestro, finding now
bronx, can you help me ?
daMaestro, 512mb
never compiled wireshark myself
pip, why on earth are you compiling wireshark?
pip, it's provided in the repositories.
he wants to
he should change his mind.
do you have libpcap ?
ferrum, this question makes me mad
yeah,I have libpcap rpm package installed
pip, yum install wireshark wireshark-gui what's wrong with
this?
libpcap-devel?
as well as its devel package
libpcap-devel
yeah
in simple,I want to compile wireshark
from source pacakge
pip, and what's the error?
error is when ./configure ,there is no pcap.h file found
and the computer asks me to check if I have libpcap-devel
installed
weird
you have libpcap-devel ?
2 pip| as well as its devel
do you have /usr/include/pcap.h?
rpm -V libpcap-devel, verify if all files are ok
daMaestro, i did swapon /dev/sda3
ferrum, I think not
daMaestro, do i need to do something else?
Arfdee, try booting to runlevel 1
Arfdee, just to see if you can bring things up
how do i do that? boot linux single?
ferrum, do you have pcap.h in /usr/include/ ?
I don't have libpcap-devel installed. libpcap-devel provides
that.
ferrum, try it
Arfdee, when grub is loaded
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/runlevel/
pip, now I have it.
Arfdee, select the kernel you want to boot and press 'a' to
(a)ppend and add 1
daMaestro, i am confused, is that a kernel parameter?
ah ok
ferrum, you have pcap.h in /usr/include/ ?
yes
after you installed libpcap-devel ?
right.
rpm -ql libpcap-devel
ferrum, so that's unfair
i appended 1 right after rhgb
I installed that package but no pcap.h
it gets all the way to starting udev
sits there, and then kernel panic
pip, you actually checked? the file isn't there?
yum remove libpcap-devel && yum install libcap-devel
err, s/libcap/libpcap
daMaestro, so still kernel panic
Arfdee, i have no idea
Arfdee, are you booting the correct kernel for you
hardware?
daMaestro, the one that came with fedora 7?
i just did the upgrade
hey guys what's new
dakoo, the kernel
oh, you did an upgrade? eaak
ferrum, sorry,that's fairly fair ,I didn't install libpcap-devel
but libcap-devel
Arfdee, i can't even try to support an upgrade.
aha
Arfdee, sorry.
daMaestro, what about a fresh install without formatting
?
bad magic number, and yes ufs is compiled in the kernel
Arfdee, basically you need to format
Arfdee, what user data do you have to keep?
Arfdee, are you using lvm with a seperate /home
daMaestro, how do i know it's not a hardware thing?
daMaestro, i do have a separate boot partition
mount -t ufs -o ufstype=hp,ro,loop adtron.img /mnt/test
Arfdee, i don't know
daMaestro, what happens if /sbin/start_udev doesnt run?
hi
Missing Dependency: mkinitrd = 6.0.9-7.1 is needed by package
kernel
my mkinitrd is mkinitrd-6.0.9-5
there's a kernel update that depends on another update that
hasn't been released yet, i think
you should just hold off a day or two and try again
as ever... thanks
dakoo, you are mounting a iso correct
yes
mount -o loop ro isoname.iso
how do i determine if i need a i586 kernel rpm or
i686?
unless you have ancient hardware you want i686
Arfdee, what is processor
celeron
686
Arfdee, basicly if you are running anything newer than a PII you
want the 686 kernel
thank you sir
can you help me with a problem?
it's an hpze4400 and i upgraded to f7
I was corrected for saying that... i686 is apparently Pentium
Pro...
at udev during boot, it says
hi, on f7 machine, at "starting udev," it says "kernel panic - not
syncing: out of memory and no killable
processes"
how much memory is there on that machine?
lunitik, i know what the 686 processor was
512
but in laymans terms is why i said basicly
LiveCD or regular media?
dvd iso
err
installed f7
Arfdee, how much memory is in that machine
512mb
Uhh... that should be more than enough...
just barely lol
Arfdee, at this point i would do a memtest86 on your memory
with the rescue cd
does it come with rescuecd
?
i am booted on rescue cd right now
so. i just noticed my headphone jack on my workstation isnt
listed in alsa... and doesnt have any playback
anyone know much about linux sound?
hehe. i usually mute it and play sound on my windows laptop
drat, i just upgraded the kernel on the system and it has the
same problem at starting at udev
hi there ppl!!! Can anyone help me?? I cant adjust my
resolution on my monitor. It only has 800 x 600 available.
cheers!!!
system-config-display --reconfig
ive tried to setup a remote printer with
system-config-printer but it seems it always has to connect to
localhost
i simply cannot print
use the remote print server's CUPS web interface
the printer is actually a network printer and locally
connected to a windows machine
dont ask why, i dont know
erm...
system-config-printer is for CUPS configuration in general I always
thought?
Xeonwales, system-config-display and try changing your
monitor.
it generally is
i just want to do IPP
but the /etc files get overwritten
i want to find out how to disable that
what should I do to get more visibility for a bug in
bugzilla? it's quite serious and it's still new from 8 days
ago...
my pet peeve with most distros is that too and i've never
worked out how to sort it
ya
too helpful in the wrong ways
Back again .. file permissions of 755 work fine in
/etc/cron.d but fail miserably in FC6. What should they
be?
what?
CrackZmoQ, I've got a file in /etc/cron.d that runs just fine
under RH9 with 755 permissions.
Here, it's 700 ... although this is an F7 machine
When I install the same web app under FC6, cron bitches and
moans about how 755 is no good .. '(*system*) BAD FILE MODE
(/etc/cron.d/ctm508)'
Oh, 700. That makes sense. So, is that documented anywhere?
lunitik++ Thanks!
So, I have a friend who has a problematic nVidia card. He
enabled "Desktop Effects" in GNOME and now GNOME is broken. Where
does the Destkop Effects GUI store that setting? Can I nuke that
file? Or would just deleting all .gnome* dirs in his home dir fix
it?
dowdle, he could just uninstall compiz
yum remove compiz
I'll have him give it a try.
Heh, spoke too soon .. 700 doesn't work either. OK, I have
four cron files, I'll try different combinations on each
one.
hey
i wonder why i cant install properly with the netinstaller
why is ther even a netinstaller ?!
i wonder if you just want to bitch or solve a problem
i wonder...
lunitik, The answer is actually 600. Good trial and error on
that one.
zodiac i dont wanne get on pills to find a solution if thats
what u wonder about
Sorry, s/Good/Good old/
Umm, it's a directory... therefore it would be an odd
number.
sure tell me a solution ... or while ur at it bitch about a
users remark on open source
Too bad the compiz package has no documentation other than a
README and a changelog.
/part
lunitik, No, I meant the individual files.
I have a RH9 system that works fine with 755 files, but on FC6,
the same files have to be 600.
fuck u zodiac freak
you gettin' sweet on me?
lovely
heh
bytheway u gotte tell me whats a zodiac ... ive always
wondered
you've heard of a dictionary?
im to lame
to actually buy one
you'll find out late one night
LOL
lol
i was thinking u was gonne say ur worse nightmare :p
but its close
just finished an install of F7 onto a laptop here
i cant seem todo netinstall on my laptop
freez at second stage
anaconda
whazilla, that's what I did.. netinstall
what mirror ?
whazilla, I have an in-house mirror
how do u get an in-house mirror ?
yum fc6 ?
whazilla, copied the contents of the F7 DVD into a directory
and serve that up with Apache
cant do that
as i want to install on a ps3(ppc) a duo core x64 and a
i386
whazilla, the DVD on this laptop is dead .. actually had to use
a 2nd DVD drive and boot from the 70MB F7 boot disk
i have a bandwidth cap, is there a program i can use to
"compress" my internet usage more?
70mb ? u sure i download boot.iso was only 7mb ?
whazilla, oops you are right... 8MB ..
then i dont get why net mirrors dont work
netinstall implies installing from the net
not from a home apache serv
!!!
whazilla, it should be the same perhaps a problem w/ your NIC
?
nop all is fine
it download stage2.img
whazilla, do you go to ALT-F4 etc to see if there are
errors
hi
not responsive at all
hi gescape
whazilla, have you tried forcing text-mode install only;
perhaps it is attempting to start the GUI mode and is freaking
out
Thanks for the help, all.
gui (anaconda)is already started
its at after the setting up /partitioning ... start ... freez
instant freez
the best freez out
im lost
is ther a fedora ps3 chan ?
peters-tx it cant be done intentionally that net install doesnt
present a list of working mirrors for the corresponding running
hardware arch ?
like any other linux installer from net ?
its the first time i came across this maddness :$
now i'll better part
whazilla, wait
k
Yes, actually... you should write down a mirror you wish to
use...
whazilla, try using something like Knoppix to lay out your
partitions; then let F7 use the layout that already exists; have
you tried that
the problem is not in partitioning it even formats rights
the problem is in installing the packages from net
whazilla, so networking related
The net install method isn't confined to just mirrors, it's
intended for admins to use also...
ie, local mirrors... on that network...
prolly but i dont see a conflict as it succesfully donloaded
the stage2.img anaconda installer
whazilla, another possibility (but more work) would be to
boot w/ Knoppix or F7 Live CD, layout partitions, format, and then
wget or ftp the RPMs onto the disk--so no network install, just
local
net install ... lunitik impliening installing from the network
internic or internet
If you're using rescuecd.iso, I recommend you try boot.iso
instead.
i use boot.iso
i have no plans to install manually peters-tx but thkx for the
suggesting
whazilla, ok
cuz i wouldnt know howto start that
whazilla, well it wouldn't be manual
did it once to for gentoo on ps3
whazilla, you'd just have the RPMs on local disk rather than
network
Hmm, I did a network install... no issues... I used
mirrors.kernel.org and fedora/releases/7/Fedora/x86_64/os/
that helps alot
Hmm, I did a network install... no issues... I used
mirrors.kernel.org and /fedora/releases/7/Fedora/x86_64/os/
retrying now
Does anyone know if star is now just tar
Not it really does take a while when it's calculating
dependencies or whatever... took about 45 mins here to do
that.
exist some command in shell to see speed incoming and outcoming
(internet) ?
peters-tx: Most tar applications are used via 'tar'... on
Fedora systems, gnutar is almost certainly what is being
used.
lunitik, at one point 'star' was the only tool that would
archive SELinux ACLs ... now it looks like 'tar' can do it too; so
that is good
SELinux ACLs ?
whats that ?
backups ?
lunitik did u choose ftp or http install with that
mirrors.kernel.org ?
peters-tx: I'm not sure... I can't say I've really played with
SELinux that much... I'd hope tar can now retain the rights
though...
both will work.
peters-tx: been like 2 years since Redhat started trying to put
SELinux stuff into everything.
lunitik whats SELinux ?
Google knows
I like SELinux; but it is quite a bear
just get a book on it
it gets clearer the more you read
google knows doesnt imply i can read google :p
peters-tx: more like a demon posses bear from hell
SELinux is not that bad
honestly
develisch
hmm
imho its just to complex
It does however imply that I don't care to try and explain
it.
truce
nite Vytenis
do let the bugs bite
dont let that stop you from using it
well, so far i havent seen any fedora release that doesnt
have the auditd fill my logs with selinux policy
violations
any ideas how I would change fonts for KDE apps when I'm running
XFCE ?
that, kind of tells me, its just to complex
whazilla, try wikipedia
It's really not that complicated today... there are even GUI
tools to manage it now...
i like the idea though
hello
'kcontrol'
im not sure gui tools realy is the solution
Sure it is, idiots like pretty pictures.
hi there
SELinux just needs more tuning done from the packages that
get installed; developers can't catch every detail; but yes it is
uber complex too hehe
uSELinux just needs more tuning done from the packages that get
installed; developers can't catch every detail; but yes it is uber
complex too hehe/u
what does Fedora normally come with?
if its so complex that very few if any realy understands the
complex policies, then it will be hard to understand what a change
in it, realy will do
there is an official repository or something like that?
GNOME?
me gonne read google ... I4LL BE BACK IN A THOUSAND
YEARS
gnome and kde
both with custom look and feel, to look as uniform as
possible
SELinux Management lets you control a lot of aspects, without
making the user understand too much...
alright thanks
Looks like the "Bug Reporting Tool" in F7 doesn't know
anything about proxies lol
okey how hard is to say secure linux ? o_0
$ su, # yum update (it freezes on "Loading installonlyn
plugin", forever). Any hint?
ye, for the daemons in the default policy yes, under the
default useage scenarions
pro police i hate those packages :$
Uses simple language to configure complex rules... can't really
complain about that.
that question is impossible to answear, it realy depends on
what you mean with "linux"
and what you mean with "secure"
Yes, they assume people who want more from SELinux will take
the time to learn it...
SElinux duhn :p
thanks, that worked great
i dont dare to alter the policies, until i have a very good
understanding of how they work, otherwise i can very well introduce
a security problem by altering the policies
whazilla, good deal
i hate it tho
so far i havent seen anyone that have managed to make one big
selinux policy for a whole machine, that idea was dropped, and now
they favour to have policies for the big, commonly usead
daemons
it stopped me running my pspdev toolchain
which is the preferred media for installing Fedora CD or
DVD?
i would say dvd
why does "yum" freezes as I reported above?
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Security/Features
-- some steps Fedora takes out of the box to secure your
system.
ah, I better go grab a DVD sometime then :O
I have a burner and all that just no blank DVD's left
i found a hack solution via valkgrind ...SElinux isnt that
secure after all
cds will work fine aswell, if you have blank cdrs at
home
BULLE, I guess the alternative would be "Allow or Deny?" etc etc
8D
does anyone have a problem with aMule?
how many blank cd-r's would I require do you think
That doesn't even include the Firewall tool provided.... and
doesn't touch on iptables at all
I mean with connection
pro police pss packages part of selinux ?
pro police stopped me running a dev toolchain
I checked the port and it looks open and aMule just does not
connect and I do not see anything in sys log
gescape stop there
u see now why illigal downloads suxx
whazilla, hack solution via valkgrind???
Hello can sombody help me i have big big problem im at the
datacenter right now
somebody did it remotly
and i cant install fedora it gives errors
im using the live version
a bud to make the toolchain updated so it be handled by the
pro police packages on ubuntu at that time
i have icon on my desktop that says install to hard
drive
What the hell are you talking about "Pro Police"?
when i do this and it tells me to reboot it gives
errors
whazilla, why you assume I use it for illegal stuff?
why does FC6's yum freezes every time I invoke it?
so it was rather an upgrade to a shell script making it
comform with latest security patches
So try regular install media?
?
gecape i dont imply i was making my magic
Where did I confuse you?
whazilla, mmm... i c
thx
what media ?
oke let me explain the problem again
you may have a background job accessing the yum database, i.e.
pirut
just kidden ther is lots of free legal downloads via p2p ...
just gotte find em
gescape u arent offended i hope ?
so, do I have to kill pirut?
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/releases/7/Fedora/i386/iso/F-7-i386-DVD.iso
root3234
i did download the live version fedora core 7 and now i can
use a desktop but
strace it, and see where it hangs
yea but what about live i only can use cd roms \?
No one is confused about your issue...
whazilla, no, it's ok
so what can i do
What about live? It appears to be broken on your box... file
bugs, and fall back to the old methods.
lol i did remove everything
i made 2 hour drive
If you're in a datacenter, I presume you have more than one
box....
no just one
or possibly just stop yum-updatesd, I can't remember which
one (ps ax |grep yum)
Have fun with your downtime.
very kind jeez
isnt there anything i can do with this live ?
have you run mediacheck on that livecd?
I am just a little irritated... I installed F7 and almost
everything was fine... then fist couple of updates ... aMule
stopped working. Today couple of updates Beryl crashed and lost
config ...
etc
how do i get the added firewall rules to stay set?
i click applly then ok and when i go back they are gone
on a 10GB partition for Fedora 7, how much of a swap partition
should I make on the 10GB if I have 2x1GB of RAM on an Intel Core 2
Duo T7300.... and do I need any other partitions other than just
swap and /
1GB would be plenty
Uhhh... you shouldn't need more than 1gb Swap
okay 1GB it is
do I need to make a /boot partition as well?
because I already have 2 partitions on the hard drive as is
You probably want to seperate out /home also, that way you can
keep personal stuff after upgrades...
(windows, and storage)
/etc/init.d/iptables save
ahh ty malikeye
Recommend you use LVM though.
lvm?
logical disks right?
got a lot of reading ahead of ya
If you use LVM you will want to separate out /boot from the
LVM...
best learn it though, if you are gonna use nix in any capacity
for other than personal use
LVM is similar to Windows dynamic disks....
I'm not too familiar with either unfortunately
that didnt work they are gone again
is there any changes to when I use the partition thing in
Fedora?
"Dynamic" is the key word... it makes managing your discs
easier...
essentially, it's disks combined into volume groups from
which logical volumes are created which house your
filesystems
dunno
LVM is default.
did you recreate them ?
i thought there was some yum command but i cant remember
it
so if I were to partition under Windows and do "Use free
space on selected drives and create default layout" that would
work?
yea i opened the fw and clicked add then put the port clicked
apply then ok
I doubt there is any tool for Winblows that configures
LVM
post yer iptables --list to a pastebin somewhere
I mean if I were to cut off a 10GB chunk for free
space
will Fedora's installer be able to handle the partitioning and what
not?
Sure
NO YOU'RE FAT
interesting
Talking to yourself?
no u!
oh ok...
yeah fedora's installer handles the partitioning
so my physical volume would be Windows, WinStorage, Fedora Swap,
Fedora
i think i had to use cfdisk for slack and possibly mandriva but
they very well could have changed the installer since I used
it
but in the Fedora partition it would use LVM volumes?
erm logical volumes
Yes... this really isn't as complicated as you're making it
though
eh I forget all that
lol
what's the diff. between logical and illogical?
Black and white?
spock
so it'll do its thing by itself if I just hack off a chunk of my
disk
il
how large do you think Fedora needs? I don't plan to be using
it as my main OS
you can choose to use only free space, so yes
10GB should be fine
Yes, by default it'll even leave your Winblows partition
alone ... you'll be back to figure out how to boot to Windows again
though
lol honestly have a 160GB drive
i'm on a 6 gig i copied 2 cds (starcraft/broodwar) off my
other comp i have ~500MB left
lmao
pirate!
I own the game
10gb is plenty... won't take up that much space... maybe
3gb
ah alright
isn't that the default rules ?
yea i cant add anything
hmm okay how to decide what I need to being installing
Fedora
its an Intel Core 2 Duo
I'm not good with iptables, but I know how to look at 'em,
save 'em, and load 'em
so x86_64 or? (I'm planning on testing the iwlwifi for my
card)
fedora install media
i believe that would be x64
i would avoid _64 if all you want is a desktop machine
Surfer boot.iso for arch x86_64
x86_64 isn't work it
Well that didn't deliver, there wasn't even smoke
i got same setup here intel duo core
hmm so you're saying to avoid 64 stuff?
no
I second the thumbs down on the 64 stuff
saying it's not worth it
if u got a intel duo u gotte take x86_64
bs
you will wind up at some point having 32-bit stuff sneaking
in and hosing you
uyou will wind up at some point having 32-bit stuff sneaking in and
hosing you/u
do you know the yum command to allow you to apply your
firewall rules?
suspecting that firestarter have problems in F7
hmm so many conflicting answers :P
Surfer try x86_64
Doesn't HAVE to... Core Duo supports 32bit emulation.
emulation :p
Why would yum have anything to do with Firewalls?
Think dude... yum is the package manager.
well theres some update or something to install something
about security config or something but i cant remember
it
I don't think it's emulation
i386 would be easiest, x86_64 would give better performance in
some cases.
the x86_64 instructions are in addition to the 32bit, I
believe
hmm the Fedora 7 x86_64 torrent seems to be 3.4GB :P
I suppose I need to go buy a DVD-R sometime
use netinstall cd iso of 7mb
lol might take a few nights downloading?
surfer you can install from a live cd also
10Mbps/1Mbps
couple hours
live cd is gui based as well?
You wouldn't likely use more than 1/3 of what is on that
DVD...
yep
live cd installs the live cd image.... no choice of
packages
thats true
hmm
Surfer666, are you thinking go to F7 ?
However, the DVD is actually compressed... if you did install
EVERYTHING on that DVD, it would occupy about 6gb of space... maybe
more.
I think I am gonna use F7
Surfer666, what do you use nowadays ?
I just want to test iwlwifi stuff and explore linux :P
Better yet, use USB stick and diskboot.img
Win32
Fc6 ?
Surfer666, better make install Fc6 .. wait more 3 months to
F7
how come?
ati vid card?
Fc6 is more stable ...
nvidia
F7 .. lot updates per day
ahh ok nvm
Use the net install image 'boot.iso' in the '/os/images'
directory... and write this down: mirrors.kernel.org and
/fedora/releases/7/Fedora/x86_64/os ... (you want to get the
boot.iso from os/images from the same directory, else it'll
complain...)
in 3 months F7 will be half dead
hmm F7 will probably be able to use my Intel 4965 wifi
right
malikeye, I dont think lot improvements from Fc6 to F7
Yes, there is a new exception for such things.
Just newer packages, and the infrastructure....
do you use virtualization ?
"infrastructure" ?
Hi... my /home is not being mounted at boot... dmesg shows
"ReiserFS: sda7: warning: xattrs/ACLs enabled and couldn't
find/create .reiserfs_priv. Failing mount." any one know this
bug?
I made install F7 a few week ago and I can say that many
packages were problems to run
No I don't use virtualization... no need for it... and yes,
infrastructure... the core/extras merge, the tools to manage that,
the hardware detection, the tools to spin new distro's...
etc
all packages work fine for me, on all three machines I run
full time all day long
Why are you using Reiser? ew
I saw that yum was un-stable
fast and un-stable
how is it unstable ?
aborting .. no reason
hello... I've been having trouble with the SuperSavage in my
laptop since FC6
hello... I've been having trouble with the SuperSavage in my
laptop since FC6
Until kernel 2.6.22 comes out, I won't have 3D, but the error
I'm getting isn't related to that
I've been using it since test4, no real issues at all
is there a bug ?
isolated incidents != unstable
it attempts to find my dri module in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/savage_dri.so
does anyone know why FC7 install gets stuck installing the
pata_serverworks driver?
however, that's not where the dri modules are
Hi all!! How do i get files to open in the same window instead
of opening another window??
ok
Xeonwales, it's a setting in Nautilus (the file browser)
You mean with Nautilus?
you might have to go under settings
lunitik, comes from previous distro...
yeah, how do i change it?
from date release F7 .. exist many updates ?
Install gconf-editor .... browse to /apps/nautilus/preferences
and check 'always_use_browser'
Always open in Browser Windows
malikeye, can you check for me if firestarter is working f7
?
anyone know how I broke it (on old FC6 it worked until
something happened) and how I fix it?
here Fc6
Previous distro sucked
Cool, thanx all!!!!
don't use firestarter
I use
meaning, I don't use firestarter
one last question, Fedora wont find my wireless card, can i
get any drivers?
bone last question, Fedora wont find my wireless card, can i get
any drivers?/b
is available F7 .. but I think some problems with
iptables
have you looked for bugs ?
sincerely .. nope
that would be my first search
yes you have reason
I have logic
so if I use the net install cd, will the cd have a gui
install?
erm install gui
Yup.
with only 7MB really?
it will pull the stuff from the net source
It can download the necessary files for the GUI install.
I made install in first day F7 .. almost zero information ..
about bugs
ah
Surfer666, it downloads it all into memory
cool
I was watching bugs the first couple days... by like days 3
there was like 100 of em
If your computer can boot from a USB, you can even do
netinstall with just that.
are 600 Mb .. packages to download .. if any problem ... need
re-start from zero .. better get dvd
need to weed through those though
lots of dupes
I've got Evolution blowing up on me lots
peters-tx: There are evolution updates... I have my fingers
crossed it fixes such issues.
have available "xawtv" to F7 ?
I think atrpms repository
Don't use atrpms unless you have to.
why ?
I have used Fc6
has anyone had any troubles in FC6 with the recent release of
the new nvidia driver? 100.14.09? xserver fails to quit when I try
to escape to command-line (using ctrl + alt + backspace). Please
help?
Eh, it apparently isn't in any other repo, so have at
it.
gen0, I am using
"xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx-1.0.9631-7.lvn6"
Ah... so I'm guessing my card has finally been obsolesced.
:-(
and "ctrl + alt + backspace" works pretty good
what type of card
?
old one ... let me see
guys, can someone with F7 past me the content of each file in
/etc/yum.repo.d/ please
I've a 6600
s/repo/repos
GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 8x]
hmm I think it's symlink time for me
hmm...
i am thinking make install of F7
again
*pokes around for the log files*
gen0, try kmod-nvidia-96xx
hmm... ok.
here I have
kmod-nvidia-96xx-1.0.9631-7.2.6.20_1.2952.fc6
I'll have to do a reboot from a terminal window, though.
working nice ...
ok
in "man mencoder" .. how can I make search ?
use / ?
bleh... gotta reboot. *crosses fingers*
/exit
i figuuured out the fw prob
please, can someone with F7 paste me the content of each file
in /etc/yum.repo.d/* to pastebin?
what was it ?
its some bug
k
figured
had to run yum update system-config-securitylevel
--enablerepo=updates-testing
is the bug pretty much solved ?
IE, would it help to confirm for them in the bug ?
idk ill look at the bug report again
are update mirrors slow this evening?
can you link me when you get to it ?
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=227285
thanks
np
it's pretty much confirmed it's fixed in test
i noticed that
they should move it to the regular repo though
i had to enable the testing repo to get it
Ok... so that didn't work.
is there anything else I have to do to get it to work outside of
the normal configuration?
...
quit
exist one way to convert one group rulers (iptables) applicated
in commands again ?
when I do "iptables -L" I can see these rules
how to convert these commands in script ?
not command but results "iptables -L" in script
is possible ?
I don't understand your question
/etc/sysconfig/iptables
iptables-save doesmostly what you want
and it will save all your rules into the file you pipe it
to.
let me try ... thanks
FC7 is niiice
yeah
do you use it for a webserver
the art is so nice ... me? no
i see
yeah the art looks nice\
/mme may as well
i would love to use it as a primary desktop, but i need
winblows for apps
actually buusta wine can run a surprisingly number of wiin
apps
Busta--: use vmware
seamlessrdp
but then i guess it depends on what your running too
not enough resources =/
runs too slow
games?
business apps, like Axure, Business Plan Pro, outlook, MS
Project
...etc
ahh ic
productivity apps
crossover may work then
i ran vmplayer on my windows box and loaded a fedroa
image
i tried it the other way around at first
you work in an exchange shop ?
crossover is like wine?
crossover is wine
but customized for specific apps
i see
Bleh. Anyone know of an application that will do pop-up
reminders and stuff for tasks
iits not free though i dont think
it is not
well, you can "find" it
thats true if you look in the right place
but for work, I wouldn't suggest that
oooh exploration
cedega too but its garbage in my opinioon
Why do you say that?
cant you find some kinda free widget for that
iif just had way beeter luck with wine itself
cedega isn't bad considering what it's doing
i guess its all about what you want to do with it though i
guess
Wine doesn't support most of DirectX... Cedega does.
well 90% of the games i play are popcap games
(actually, technically I've heard reports that you can
install DirectX via Wine... but yeah)
also use emulators (nes ps1 ect)
Might explain it.
What PS1 emulator for Linux?
i havent found a native one yet
never got WoW running right with cedega though
nobody i know has
Weird, last I heard, it's officially supported by
Blizzard
it supposedly is
well .. lets go to F7 Install
i know theres lost of ps1 emulators out there that are ported
for linux but you have to compile them from source
I hope be a surviver
Hey guys anybody using freenx with Fedora 7?
i have a dman weird issue
damn is what i meant to say
after using freenx or vice versa to use freenx i have to reboot
my Fedora 7
i have tried going to init 1 and back to init 5 or 3 and same
issue i get gnome applet errors
oafd or somehing similar
lunitik, Evolution just won't do message filters worth a
krap
nobody experience this issue with freenx?
probably related to something maybe the desktop switching
feature?
anny torrent users here?
yup
i cant install fedora period
i checkedout gnome-control-center 2.18.0 from gnome.org SVN
2.18 branch, for fixing a bug i saw on my F7.... but when i
compiled it, i saw it's already fixed! so... i saw my F7 rpm
package is verison 2.18.0-18 ... where the code for that package
came from? an internal fedora code repo ?
whats a good bt client that runs on linux (prefer one with gui).
az is so not working
maybe u might wanne take a look at debian net installer and
include some sorta mirror handling like debian installer
has
would be an ideal solution
im not talking about apt eh !
enviouz, bittorent client is installed by default on Fedora
7
enviouz, bittorrent
and its graphical
k ill check it out
bitorrent client
im limiited though as to what i can use as i use only private
trackers
well worst comes to worst install wine and trhe download
utorrent aka micro torrent
jaclinuxhelp, fedora CVS
it works i have used it in the past
daMaestro, where is fedora CVS ?
so no takers on the freenx issue i have?
jaclinuxhelp, cvs.fedora.redhat.com
who can access there ?
anybody?
yes
so... patches for F7 must be diffed from that sources, right
?
yes
i just may try that sklav and dump az as there is something
def wrong with it
got a quick question. I just installed fedora 7 but can not
connect to the internet. I need the madwifi packages. Where would I
find these for fedora? and I havent used an rpm distro in a long
time. so how would i go about installing them?
az crashes all the time for me
its not crashing it woond d/l or u/l
TubaSoldier, yum -y install madwifi i believe its on the dvd but
someone will correct me shortly if im wrong
10bps d//l 20 up pos i think
thanks, I dont have the DVD. I didnt want to download it because
I know i wont use all the packages. I just used a cd. but if i have
to download an entire DVD just for madwifi then I guess i
will.
TubaSoldier, know just download the madwifi package
ok, where would i find it?
got to a fedora mirror and look in the packages themselves
hold on
let me check for u
thanks
TubaSoldier, http://dl.atrpms.net/all/madwifi-0.9.4-37_r2431.fc7.i386.rpm
madwifi is also in livna
http://fedoramobile.org/wireless
thanks
he has no internet connection at the moment
thanks
I have on this partition
but I thought i would give fedora a go.
TubaSoldier, i use livna personaly
so its no problem to download them and then mount the
partition in Fedora
it has nvidia drivers and so on
thats great to hear.
so you might be better of getting them from livna for
compatibility reaons
ok
thanks for the help
where inside cvs.fedora.redhat.com is current F7 source code
??
hmm Are dual core CPU suppose to run on normal kernels in F7
or did they do away with smp kernels?
Perhaps you want the viewcvs interface: http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewcvs/
you can browse through the different repos, etc. there.
jaclinuxhelp, read all the instructions @ http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/
Socialoutcast, its included in the default kernel
use top and it the number 1
ahh
thanks
ya I see both and I was unsure why
for security patches n all that for a linux server, are there
any other updates i should run other than "yum update" or up2date
-u ?
What Fedora version?
does it matter?
Yes
could you tell me the difference?
Fedora Core 4 and prior don't have Security updates anymore.
Fedora Core 5 will stop soon.
http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/control-center/?root=core
that URL does'nt contains the latest Fedora 7 source code...
??
If you're too lazy to upgrade, you should use something like
CentOS.
is it safe to upgrade from FC4 to FC7 using yum?
No supported version of Fedora still uses up2date
Busta--: It's not recommended at all...
i see
damn i should of went with centos
put so much work into this sever would be a pain the switch
now
Busta-- i dont know... but i upgraded from F5 to F6 and then
from F6 to F7 without problems using yum
Busta--: Use a regular install CD, and choose
"upgrade"...
something will break but that depends on what services you are
using
lunitik the server is remote
There is a lot of differences between 4 and 7... also, you
were lucky to not run into issues with using libata
now...
daMaestro. i read that... doest it means that i can not see
the code though the web ? i must first download that 40 MB package
then update ?
lunitik... yeah!!! i remember!! i booted with previous kernel,
edited the fstab, and no problems!
Busta--: You can try, but no one is to blame if it doesn't
work.
yeah
lunitik, go with centos 5 and call it a day
it has 8 years of support
damn
new kerel works good here too... nvidia drivers actually fixed
crashing I was having
Uhh... you directed that at the wrong person.
oops
sorry
anybody using freenx and experience weird issue when trying to
logon local after?
8 years of support though? That's longer than RedHat I
believe? Wow. I wish them luck with that..........
redhat is 8 years also
unless the sun totaly messed with my head
how about focusing on secuirty with fc4? would it be possible
to just keep security tight on the machine
looks like they cleaned up the bug too, that was being
reported in dmesg
Ahh, ok, then that makes sense, CentOS just package RHEL
stuff.
by turing off all the unneeded services and protecting it
using a firewall
yes
Busta--: Can't you boot from an install image remotely?
Busta--, that wont work on a issue like apache security
hole
good question
Busta--: Any security updates to packages to avoid things
like buffer overflows would still exist... FC4 didn't even contain
smash protection.
assuming you run a web server
Busta--: OK. I should probably have made that as a statement-
I'm relatively sure that you can.
yeah? im going to look into that
yes a webserver
if your going to take the time to update to newer version
maybe you should install centos 5
i think im going to have to switch to centos
yep
your right sklav
most config files will work out of the box
Busta--: Research installation with PXE images..
Busta--: CentOS 5 is basically FC6... you still might see some
configuration differences and issues, depending how much things
have changed over that year....
for apache they are minimal
lol I am just gald I got my sound and wireless all working at
once
i just moved froom centos 4 to centos 5
no issue using my previous configs
sweet
just dont overwite the existing ones in case
example php has changed
CentOS 4 will basically be FC4 ....
yup
oh and dont enable selinux on centos 5 unless you know your
stuff
its enabled by default make sure you select disabled
wouldn't it be FC5 ?
why not?
or leave it a warning state
selinux is great.
(permissive)
dameastro depends what you want to do
*any* public facing server should have selinux enforcing
;-)
he needs to work out of the box
i have it on permissive for another week my server make sure there
is no issue and then i will put it on enabled
fc 7 has better tools to handle selinux
like gui config utility
its missing on centos 5
only way to fix issue is threw command line
well im off
later all
Is there any way to re-connect to a disconnected 'screen' server
session, after the session FIFO's been deleted?
Consequence of Lon Hohberger's Jul 1 2003 change (3.9.15-8)
moving session files to ~/.screen from /var/run and/or
/tmp/screen-$USER
... and shared NFS home directories.
does that mean you've had a session open for 4 years ?
What the hell's up with Gedit in F7?
thats the easiest ive ever set up a printer
It's running the Python code it edits, and refuses to save
files if you disable automatic backups!
anyone sort out circular dependencies? udev = 057-3 for package:
kernel Error: udev conflicts with kernel 0:2.6
No.
About a month.
Install them both together in one step.
711 bugs... man that is a lot
karsten i'm trying a yum update it's not havving it
Lawbringer, uname 0r
uname -r rather
STBY
ok this is where it get's interesting uname -r=2.6.16-u6-p4-pae
it's a Xen box
not is not a valid fedora kernel
that is not a valid fedora kernel
VileGent, correct but i have little choice but to run it in a
xen env
Lawbringer, we have xen kernels
ok sorry, i have little choice as it's what my host
imposses
Lawbringer, so basicly you are not running fedora
so the only thing you can do is disable kernel update
