What an interesting way to crash Fedora. After logging out of KDE and killing the 9 processes running under my name, I tried switching to the graphical screen to log in. I saw something that said "Init 2.86 restarting" and then a bunch of symbols. When I tried to switch back to a text terminal, I got more symbols. I had to use the computer's power button to restart. When I restarted, I got a black screen

have you installed any grafical drivers?

I was responding to Simonko19's question "didnt it work?"

Simonko19, no.. i use voodoo magic to make my hardware work ;p)

here you are

no. If you have questions, ask them in this channel

they're not Fedora-related. Streeter was my mother's maiden name, so I was just going to ask where you lived.

I'm not your mother I live in Huntsville, AL, but my family is from Mississippi

Okay, there's a very real chance we're not related then. I was just checking.

maybe far related

Is there a Fedora LiveCD?

is

more than one

ftp.quicknet.nl

Thanks

g`day mates
livinded, what's not to understand
livinded, there's often benefit in being able to use an OS without installing it

I just thought it might be handy to try a LiveCD before I attempt the full install.

I hate livecd's, they have two purposes in my mind and that is for repair or bypassing physical security

...to test for hardware compatibility

ball, that's one of the uses
livinded, but ball just showed another
livinded, how does one bypass physical security with a live cd?

whether you use fedora, ubuntu, slackware, etc. the hardware support is going to be the same (assuming you take the time to install drivers that may not be included in one distro)

Live Cds allow you to boot really usefull distros without installing them onto the machine. There are even distros that allow you to reset Windows password

PinTail_b, quite true

PinTail_b, if you have physical access to a computer you can do anything you want with it anyway

use it to pick the lock of the room with the computers in ;-)

seems very useful to me

you can't really get an idea what a distro is like by using a livecd because you're not doing any real administration, you're not setting stuff up, you're not installed more sopftware, etc.

livinded, but most people don't really like to do that stuff either

yes, but sometimes you don't want to hijack it, just regain access without being disruptibe

right, but I'll know whether it's likely to throw its hands in the air because of my CPU, display adaptor or whatever

livinded, so not being able to do it doesn't really hurt

and many live distros when installed aren't compatible with the distro they are based off of so they can't be updated
but those are all things people need to do

livinded, that's not true for ubuntu or fedora as far as i know
livinded, need to yes, but some don't

PinTail_b, rebooting and boot a different os is quite disruptive when this computer is monitored in any way

but most of those ppl who test it in such way, wants to check if they like wallpaper and login screen

livinded, technically, fedora can plug and play with no sys admin

a livecd may be good for a kiosk, but using that on a box for any extended amount of time for more than just browsing the internet is just painful

livinded, fair enough, i don't think it was intended for that either

and I'm a fairly satisfied fedora user, but it still needs a semicompetant sysadmin to be run well

livinded, when the whole livecd is copied to a ramdisk like the fedora live images it's actually fun to use

it doesn't just plug and play and run itself
until you need to do something useful
or use an atheros based wireless card

hello, i installed k3b 1.0.1, and it created a menu called "others" in fedora menu... i tried to installed redhat-menus-8.9.10-3.fc7.noarch.rpm package from updates, but name of "others" menu became ".hidden" in application menu

maybe I'm just weird, but I actually like to administer my own boxes and set them up in a way that I like

livinded, ok, live images are fun but beyond being able to chat while installing or using gparted before it's not that useful, maybe to impress your fried that has never used or seen linux hosting on his box

AndyCap , Anvil and Southern_Gentlem .... can you help me?

meh, the only thing I'd like added to anaconda would be tetris and maybe a terminal I can use
although if tetris was added I'm not sure I'd ever actually finish my installs

livinded, same may be true if anaconda would spot an irc client, what i really miss is the functionality of gparted in anaconda

gparted isn't a tool, its a pretty front end to a lot of other tools.

I keep irssi running in a screen session on one of my servers
I don't need an irc client

my laptop´s built-in ipw3945 wireless does work but it is sometimes a bit erratic. on the other hand, does the ipw3945 driver that comes with fedora 7 support monitor mode by default?

hey, is a repeat question here.. what is the difference between sudo and root?

hi, has anyone here managed to get fedora7 wifi working on a vaio. my vaio uses Intel 3945ABG with WPA.

BTW, Fedora 7 says my laptop's built-in ipw3945 wireless interface is wlan0. i also have a prism2 pcmcia card that works ok on fedora 7 and kismet should work ok if it were not for the fact that fedora considers it eth1. kismet expects a prism card to be wlanX (X is a number). how can i overcome this problem?

http://fedoramobile.org/Members/opsec/intel-ipw3945-on-fedora-7/

The interface name shoudl not matter to kismet. You tell it what the interface name is!
Nice, so there's already howto's on how to remove the ilw3945..
I said 5 weeks ago it was horribly broken.. ah well

it is.

is there a way i can run alternatives in a non interactive mode? i need to script switching to postfix and would like to use the alternatives system instead of something more crude. (or is there a proper way to manually switch the alternatives system without using the actual alternatives program?)

i have a d520 and i'm not able to get sound from the built in speakers. enabling pcspkr does not help. any suggestions?

I'd think there's some commandline options to accomplish it

AndyCap, acording to the man page i don't see any. let me just give something a try and see if it works

zodiac, thanks, does WPA work with this?

wpa_supplicant
Doesn't matter what driver you use, wpa_supplicant does the authentication

cool thanks

AndyCap, bah
AndyCap, found it. just didn't sound like the right option

heh, was looking for it, but didn't have alternatives installed here

i don't see why not

I wish I could get wpa_supplicant configured to work on my work corporate wireless. It's some odd combination of Cisco/802.11x stuff and I can't figure out how to get it to go.

o.O
AndyCap, thats odd i think its a non optional package

iirc ye.

does the apt-get command not work in fedora?

*shrug* well thanks you poked me into finding it

no java, lprng or sendmail here so I don't use it anymore
that's a debian think
thing

hmm..
dang

yum

is there a similar for fedora?

AndyCap, ah that makes sense

ok

yum update, yum list available, man yum

ok

I could never remember the actual command to admin it between use anyway, so I had to dig for it

i remembered using it for java web hosting once and now that i'm using puppet on servers seems like the perfect thing to switch from sendmail to postfix in an automated way

yeah, and it probably is

alternatives --set

but is that on a file by file basis or the whole set?

That does the entire group defined by name.
I.e., it includes slaves.

how do i add a static route, i have added a new NIc card to some switch, that need the ip of 192.168.1.222 with No gateway..

don't need a route for that

sorry
how do i configure to a NIC card a ip 192.168.1.222 with no gateway..

one additional ip or the only ip?

only the ip
with no gateway
like i have added a new nic card

ifconfig ethX 192.168.1.222 netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

so i need a static host ip

create and edit a file called /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX where X is the name of the interface

is there some place i can get information to get hotmail in evolution for fedora.
they figured out a way to do it with ubuntu, i'm looking for a similar how to for fedora 7 though.

no, i highly doubt that

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=200408

only possible with an old, old hotmail account

of which i have
i've had mine for.. probably 10 years

ms uses a proprietary method
i'd say switch to gmail and use their hassle free pop forwarding

lol
i want to but everyone already knows me with my current hotmail account :/

if hotwayd is not in extras they have an rpm you can build on their homepage
hmm, that was for Shankysv87

zodiac, http://sourceforge.net/projects/hotwayd/ looks like someone's reversed engineered the protocal

while it may be useful archival knowledge .. i stick with gmail

can someone help me installing ati drivers
i have just clean installed fc6 and tried to use the livan that a lot of people suggest
it is not working

Shankysv87, here's the deal... hotwayd isn't packaged yet in the standard fedora repository

ok.
is there a repository that does have it?

Shankysv87, no idea

follow jef and andy's advice if you're dead set on hotmail

Shankysv87, and if it did.. i would not point you to it

building it was a piece of cake, but you'll have to do that on your own.

Shankysv87, since i take a hardline stance on using the main repository for packaging

gmail is a snap to setup pop forwarding

hmm.. i guess gmail is going to be the next hotmail for me :/

i take a hardline stance on not touching anything at all ms

lol
i'm getting that way
because of vista

ever.
using windows or anything ms in this day and age is just laughable
security, stability, functionality or innovation

spare us the rant

yes, people should just keep on using it, my mistake.

any fedora users in here? :-) I finally have ibm.com web teams working on our sites' useability for Linux users - can you try going to www.ibm.com and tell me if the rollover menu in the main header works? I am using RHEL5... curious if it works for Fedora users?

does not for me
not on the main root at least

mdolan, for me the menu gets hidden behind the graphic

works if if don't let flashblock play the flash animation

the menu goes under the flash

Is there a guide anywhere for getting NFS working on f7?

how can i install packages from the DVD post install

owentl, yeah; that's what I'm seeing on RHEL5

${prefix}/etc/ can anyone tell me where that is?

thanks owentl AndyCap zodiac - appreciate the extra eyeballs

only you. depends on where you installed whatever you're working on

AndyCap k thanks

whats a good MSQL manager client for fedora?
oops
MySQL*

how can i install packages from the DVD post install

not too easily, you have to make a yum repo out of the DVD

lol

rpm -ivh ?

just throw the dvd in and use rpm

zodiac, that doesnt resolve dependancies
owentl, tried, no good

yum localinstall

generic Linux instructions should work fine, Fedora isn't all that special

zodiac, tried that too, got cannot read repomd.xml

what do you mean it doesn't work?

yum localinstall /full/path/to/*rpm

even, say, RHEL docs can help

did you navigate to the RPMS directory and do it from there?

phpmyadmin

owentl, that doesnt resolve dependancies

The "Search for files..." command in the menu in Fedora 7 doesn't recursively search when I choose "Filesystem". Anyone know how I can make it?

you can install multiple RPMs at once.. ie rpm -Uvh packageA.rpm packageB.rpm
I think you can use pirut too

owentl, i know but its not nice

the problem is figuring out which to install

exactly

and pirut is unaware of DVD media

i'm surprised this hasn't been fixed

ahh, I never use pirut

You know that the DVD is only a subset of F7, right?

yum localinstall *.rpm ?

I'm not, the developers aren't in a low Bandwidth host situation

during installation it says that the package groups can be installed later
nightmare
ivazquez, sure

you can use yum to install an entire group if that is what you are wanting to do

ferrum, read above
owentl, i want to install dev tools

extract the rpm and use yum localinstall ?

sure that can be done, you can use yum grouplist to get a listing of the groups
then use yum group install group name?
err group name

groupinstall

yea sorry..
man yum !!

that's what I've beeing trying so far, but it appears portmap doesn't exist .. which is rather inconvenient

portmap has been replaced.

any clues what it's been replaced by? my current error message "portmap getport: RPC: Timed out", which is why I've been hunting for portmap

rpcbind

hi is there a command to set the exact position of windows in gnome?

--geometry

ivazquez, e.g. i like to place the gedit window on the exact postion X=600 Y=200 how do i do that with the command?

ok everybody pour yourself a drink, it's Friday, and it's Happy Hour.

gedit --help
Pssh. It doesn't list all the options.

where does phpMyAdmin defalut install to?

Try "gnome-terminal --help" instead.
rpm -ql phpMyAdmin

excuse me, anyone used dban ?

Was there a problem with the first FC7 release? I grabbed it on day 0, just installed, and ... all the rpm's are marked fc7, it's running the fc7 kernel, but /etc/fedora-release says 6.92 Rawhide, and I'm having trouble getting yum to fetch anything other then dev repos ... help?

that's not F7

Congrats, you've been duped.
That's why it pays to stick to official sources.

oh, joy - so it was a dodgey torrent? greats.

you can still update it to F7 proper

Not if it's been pushed past F7 packages.

How? I ditched 6.92 as I thought upgrading from dev to core would be a nightmare

At least, not without a lot of work.

true
but if it isn't pulling updates I assumed he wasn't still on rawhide

fedora-release says you installed test 3.

ok, that's what I figured. I guess I should grab another torrent and hope this one is the real deal ...

change of mirror structure, no core anymore

you will need to manually update your fedora-release

no need for hope, it's at http://torrent.fedoraproject.org

that is how I got to F7

clever of you

update fedora-release - but, it can't be as simple as that surely

The simplest is to backup and fresh install F7

ivazquez, i guess the geometry command only works for gnome-terminal but not for the usul gtk application windows, cause the help page is just related to the gnome-terminal command...

then you have to yum update.. BUT you will still have a TON of packages to pull!

Did you try?

jepp just getting errors

Then complain upstream.

I too would suggest getting a fresh F7

but, at the moment I can't get yum to talk to the core repos - I enable them in /etc/yum.repo.d but .. not happy

"Why don't you support a STANDARD X FEATURE?"

yes, that's probably the best bet. Oh well *sulk*

You got punk'd.

it is b/c core doesn't exist any more
no more core vs extras

sure - ok

This is crazy, every single fedora mirror seems to be lacking files somewhere for the net install

Is it still best to grab a torrent? Or can I just find the DVD iso online now?

torrent is good

It's always best to grab a torrent.

just go to fedoraproject.org and there is a link for the torrent

well, just checking, as the last torrent I grabbed was this one!

The BT client checksums it on the fly.

And for some reason fedora devs decided to not let you continue onward if a packet fails, you either need to reboot on retry the same package.

the _official_ one

actually - I'm sure the link at fedoraproject.com *was* the torrent I used
but I'll try it again

You're installing from Fedora/, not Everything/, right?

I just grabbed it on Tues and it was F7

It's transactional, ether the entire thing succeeds or fails.

I grabbed it on release - maybe it was a dodgey version

tuesday 6/12?

yes

yea

has anyone managed to install http://fedoramobile.org/Members/opsec/intel-ipw3945-on-fedora-7/
i have tried but it doesnt work

Hi guys

thanks all

i had it working but have since switched back

anybody using freenx with Fedora 7?

And i shouldnt?

did you have to do anything besides what is on the web page

atrpms has the RPMs it is a whole lot easier

I wasn't working from those instructions so I couldn't say

Everything/ isn't an installable tree.

wolsni, which instructions did you use#

Then i guess its incomplete mirrors... wich is odd since its major backbone providers.

i used the instructions for installing ipw3945 on FC6 with tweaks where necessary

bittorrent-gui lacking on one, and then TeX from ftp.funet.fi

which is probably similar to what you have there

wolsni, do you have the link?

mirror.kernel.org

you should probably stick with instructions for F7 if you're not able to debug it yourself
what error are you getting?

404 in firefox

wolsni, no error just nothing works, iwconfig nothing

mirrors. then maybe.

No 7/ there from what i see.
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/

and you followed all of the instructions in order and got no errors in the process?

That's because it's not Core...

wolsni, yup

extension "SHAPE" missing on display ":0.0"' from desktop-effects. What do I need to put in xorg.conf? I have Nvidia GEForce 6800. "glxinfo" says "OpenGL version string: 2.1.1 NVIDIA 100.14.09". I obeyed http://compiz.org/NVidia, no luck.

does the regulatory daemon run? (ipw3945d)

Ugh. Tell me you didn't...

get any results from lsmod | grep ipw ?

Whats the diffrence between Fedora core and fedora 7 then?

you need to *remove* the Module section.

Fedora Core is distinct from Fedora Extras. That distinction no longer exists in Fedora 7.
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/3rd-pty-video/ http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/remove-nvidia-installer/

Does anyone know of a standalone Flash player that uses swfdec?

wolsni, yeah I get ipw3945 and ieee80211

mplayer maybe..

nope

Is swfdec even still maintained?

so they're loaded then, that's interesting
and if you do ifconfig the wireless adapter doesn't show up?

wolsni, wait i get scan now iwlist scan works

supposedly. They claimed back in March that swfdec can now play Youtube videos. However, since swfdec doesn't actually include a player, I find this hard to believe.
there's a mozilla plugin, but it usually doesn't work, so I like to stick with the official Adobe plugin

Now that it no longer sucks as badly...

I tried the one on Livna, 0.4.3, which supposedly works, but it doesn't work
uI tried the one on Livna, 0.4.3, which supposedly works, but it doesn't work/u

is there an easy guide to upgrade to 2.6.22

kernel?

You misunderstand. I can play flash just fine. Just not with swfdec.

yes
the 2.6.22 supports my soundcard *laptop*

you may want to try a development kernel rpm

Not just yet.

i dont think that 2.6.22 has been in developement yet

oh

Nope.
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8

RSN: Ignored PMKID candidate without preauth flag
any clues?

later all

Poaste your config to pastebin.ca (make sure you fix any psk's first

ok
Khaytsus, http://rafb.net/p/iuNc5717.html

Looking... nothing obvious, but I'm not a wpa_sup guru
Not sure what proto= is.. hmm

so there's no 2.6.22 aww :P guess my realtek sound card won't produce sound

try commenting out proto and key_mgt for kicks

Khaytsus, yeah have done, no difference

And if that fails, try running wpa_supplicant on the command line to see the debug output

Khaytsus, yeah thats what i'm doing

Might output that info to pastebin

Khaytsus, is there another way to run it besides the ommand line

Sure, once it's working you just start it as a service
But to debug it, command line

should i user -Dwext ?

ummmm.. hmm
Yeah, guess that's it.. I forgot

i meant use -Dwext
ok

wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Add -d to that too for debug

what does this mean
*** [compatible/kversion] Error 1

it means that something went wrong while building something

haha

and unfortunately that's about as specific as I can be from just that error message

nice... watching livecrime right now

oh there's the more specific error
Kernel Makefile not found at '/lib/modules/2.6.21-1.3228.fc7/source'

are you trying to build a kernel?

no
iwlwifi

that should be included in the kernel for fedora 7

not the latest version
its for my intel 4965

ok, perhaps you've already answered my question but that still didn't help. I need so that when i sudo my environment, i can manipulate any file that i open outside of terminal.. is that posible besides logging into root which i don't want to do

sudo only applies to the command you run with it

You are stuck with ndiswrapper for another week I hear

su i mean
any difference?
su - whatever

really?

no difference

because it says something about 11n in the .30 wilwifi

so.. i have to log into root to change a file?

It is what i had to use, waiting on a new mac80211

Surfer666, as far as i know from the changelog 2.6.21-1.3228 had support for 4945. any specific problems you facing /

no

meh, irssi froze.. weird

it had support?

wait let me recheck

you can run GUI commands from a shell

It can't even detect it...

how?

you just have to know the name of the application's executable
like for gedit the name is gedit

3228 has support but there are issues with the mac80211 that are preventing it from associating/authenticating

ok so su - +password then do what command?
i'm trying to gedit
btw

I battled it for 3 days before I gave up

lmao

i would then say to file a bug and wait till a new version comes upstream

like for gedit the name is gedit

deep

yes

i know.. i just type "gedit" and that is it?

do you want to type more? I guess you can if you really want to

should be, yes
you can provide the path to the file I suppose
gedit --help will probably show some other options

maybe I should at least try to use it Bob-Laptop

well.. it seems that all the other commands need extra shit added to the end of it to make it do anything.. i was just making sure

trust me is there was any other way to get it working I woul have done it, ask any one I hate the idea of nPisswrapper

i never had any luck on getting iwlwifi working on 3945 though all of them suggest it should work . But i guess there is no other alternative for 4965 guys other than to use iwlwifi

when I make copy one file to desktop, I need make "F5" to see file in my desktop, same happen with remove. Is it bug of gnome F7 ?

I see your "using random English words with no meaning" class is going GREAT

hmm so how would I go installing the source for Fedora Kernel thingy
you're :P

aha hahah .. ok, Bob-Laptop

i hope that wasn't a correction for Bob-Laptop

Bob-Laptop, use your IQ to understand .. more easy

so anyone wanna direct me please

Surfer666, maybe you find some luck with this kernel it's not in f7 right now. http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=8836

The kernel is not the issue buoys
but you feel free to keep barking up that tre if you want

kernel is an issue for my soundcard but apparently I need F8 or 2.6.22

tree

mac80211 is provided by the kernel
afail

Yes and there is not an update that we need yet

Surfer666, yum install kernel-devel

thanks CrocoJet

Will be updated this coming week

Take advice by CrocoJet at your own demise.

lol

haha

hehehe

why ?

why my own demise?

I've already been snarky, do you want me to be rude?

yum install yum-utils

whats yum-utils ?

then use yumdownloader to get the src.rpm

is group tools for yum
ah .. you want source .. kernel ?

okay I got yum-utils
now what do I use?

Surfer666, why do you need source Kernel ?
for compile programs .. only necessary .. kernel-devel

iwlwifi needs some kind of Kernel Makefile not found at '/lib/modules/2.6.21-1.3228.fc7/source'

i think it's "yumdownloader --source kernel --enable fedora-source"
that should leave you with a kernel source RPM in the current directory

rpm -qa |grep kernel
suspecting that you only need kernel-devel

Be faster to google it than do all that and remember it :P

Shhhhh

how do you like cancel stuff in terminal mode :P

ctrl-c

Control C

ok

yum command, control + C only pass .. other mirror

not the short pier again I hope

so uhh yumdownloader --source kernel --enable fedora-source is running
this ETA is bull though
30 minutes...
that sounds a tad large
oh

Source takes a while in dial up just ask CrocoJet

it was going slow lmao
I'm on a 10Mbps/1Mbps

change mirror .. if you enter command via terminal . with control + C

so uhh what do I do with kernel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7.src.rpm

no idea

rpm -ivh rpm

hello folks, i'm having some issues with my via rhine integrated NIC
the card stops responding at seemingly random intervals, and only a reboot solves it

you can do what malikeye said or you can use rpm2cpio to convert it to a cpio archive (which you can then unpack)

Hello

hmm I tried rpm thing didn't do anything

"eth0: Transmit timed out, status 0003, PHY status 786d, resetting..."

cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES

try running rpm as root
su

Sorry we will not help you destroy your install, you are in over your head

rpm -ivh file

lmao

he has a point

Surfer666, curious .. what program are trying compile ?

anyone ever had this problem with rhine cards?

iwlwifi

Can anyone here reproduce bug #244271 ? https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=244271

ok
did you try .. compile using kernel-devel ?

Surfer666:
rpm -ivh iwlwifi-version.src.rpm
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
rpmbuild -bb iwlwifi.spec
cd ../RPMS
find . -name iwlwifi\*.rpm | xargs rpm -Uvh
sorry for long paste :-(

Anybody here using Sun's jdk rpm package. Can you please run "rpm -V jdk" and tell me if it verifies your installation properly?

so has anyone heard of a binary called /usr/bin/ava?

yum provides /usr/bin/ava

When I try to verify my jdk installation by running "rpm -V jdk" I get the following error message "/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.43610: line 850: IntegrateWithGNOME: command not found"

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

what does ava do, there is no man page
at least on this fedora core 2 system i am working on

Fedora Core 2 is dead
Fedora Core 2 is EOL

see i know this, the customer is getting a reisntall with fc 4

Fedora Core 2 is Not Supported

maybe fc5 if virtuzzo supports it
see i know that

Fedora Core 4 is dead

not by plesk!

Fedora Core 5 will be in 2 weeks

wait huh

talk to plesk then

swsoft sigh
ok
regardless let me reask my question what does /usr/bin/ava do
I have never seen this on a system ever

are you also getting "command not found" error?

what does rpm -qf /usr/bin/ava say ?

I bet it is part of the swsoft bastardization

the problem is, that it is no longer there

zcat has NEVER had that error

sahak, nope. i get error 127 instead.

sahak, zcat answered your problem

how do i find out pciid of my integrated wireless card?

lspci

which problem?

i thought so too obut it doesn't seem to on this machine

-bash-2.05b# rpm -qf /usr/bin/ava
file /usr/bin/ava: No such file or directory
see that is the problem

LOL

my problem is that I cannot verify Sun's jdk installation.

rcotoni, unny.

You are SCREWED

rcotoni, whereis ava ?

it is not there anymore
that is the problem
is it on your system

Southern_Gentlem, on this machine it just counts from 0 to whatever

i want to know if it is part of the trojan or whatnot

2

Arfdee, exactly

Java is there.
$ rpm -q jdk gives me "jdk-1.6.0_01-fcs"

rcotoni, since you are not running fedora 5,6 or 7 you are off topic for this channel
sahak, you didnt read the page i sent you to

Southern_Gentlem, ok on fedora core 5 6 or 7
what does /usr/bin/ava do

Is there anyway to change how FC7 opens folders?
I don't like how it opens a new window per folder

to switch java you can use /sbin/alternatives i think

Southern_Gentlem, i had to use -n

that only happens in gnome, and there is a way to fix it

always open in browser windows

rcotoni, i dont have it

I don't want to switch java, I am using both implementations (jpackage and sun's java) for my development
uI don't want to switch java, I am using both implementations (jpackage and sun's java) for my development/u

so wats teh problem

zodiac, Anyway to add a URL type bar on top?
So I can see where i am T_T

sahak, since you installed the sun.rpm you overwrote parts of jpackage

try kde

ah come on

thanks for the lack of assistance, the #linux people knew more about your distribution than you guys appaerntly

location bar

Use driver for Dell Truemobile 1300

Arfdee, which can be several chipsets

zodiac, Not there.

Is that the reason why the rpm package is not verifying properly?

it is possible to make a rpmbuild tree in home directory so that you do not have to use root

that's ridiculous

location bar (tick)

why did that guy do that

sahak, *shrug*

He can't handle the truth

and JDK itself is not complete
err, OpenJDK at least

zodiac, Not there either T_T

the you have a serious problem with nautilus
in the view menu you should see "location bar" ... if not, nautilus is incomplete or been tampered with

Southern_Gentlem, could you do me a favor?

Ahadiel, that usually happens when you run nautilus from kde

zcat, But I'm using gnome?

n/m

Ahadiel, dunno. just sayin'. only time i've ever seen it happen

There we go
I had to restart nautilus

all

(I thought it changed instantly)

just remember that

I just checked if the list of files installed by sun's jdk conflicts with jpackage installation and I didn't find any conflicts. Why are you saying that Sun's jdk rpm installation conflicts with jpackage?

Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository:
on all repos.

marek, rpm -q fedora-release

fedora-release-7.89-1

marek, repo definitions can attempt to be smart and use a variable representing the release number
marek, now that your release number is no longer 7... the urls which use that variable.. dont work
marek, you need to check your enabled repos manually
marek, especially if you are using 3rd party repos

I'm not, and I did, none is working

dude just hitr your hard drive in a strategic part and it will fix itself, just like teh FOnz

marek, which repos are currently enabled?

moeSizlak, don't steal my lines.

marek, if all you are using is rawhide... then fedora-development should be enabled.. and that is all

lol it was too good not to use

and not updates-testing?

marek, no
marek, rawhide == development
marek, there's no testing or updates for rawhide

sahak, it has historicly

thanks to clarification
for

marek, have fun..... make sure you have a pile of tasty young children to feed to rawhide

oh, yes

igot a few if you need any
im lookin to get rid of em cheap

whats a good site for some PHP help?
the php page I am trying to fix is taking a while to load

Socialoutcast, http://www.djangoproject.com

so is this a prog to find errors?
sorry am am a little new to PHP

Socialoutcast, dumb joke. go to php.net

lol
is there any dif in programing php in linux and windows?
the site is being relocated from a 2k3 bo to a linux box

Socialoutcast, no, php is immutable
unless it references things on the local filesystem.

k

in which case you have to code to the environment.

well heres what the page does

for example, "C\blahblah" wouldn't work under linux.

it pulls stats from a game server thats in vista
and we are moving it from a server in Aus to a server in the US thats on the same network as the game server

there many files (e.g. /usr/lib/python2.5/mailbox.pyo /usr/lib/python2.5/mailbox.pyc) in python-2.5 installation which are exactly identical and they are not hardlinked to each other or anything like that. Is there a good reason for this?

How can I start up my computer without the X window system?

sahak, those aren't the same files.
citiskyline_, add a " 3" to the end of your kernel arguments in /etc/grub.conf

but running "diff" on them shows that they are the same.

http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/runlevel/

ferrum and wolsni, thanks

sahak, python uses them at different times, iirc. I forgot the difference between .pyo and .pyc.
ah
.pyo is optimized .pyc

anyone know of a decent data recovery app (ext3) for a drive that torched the FS after a FSCK.. or to possibly repair the FS to copy data off the drive
right now it's unmountable

how do i repair a mysql table that has been marked as crashe
?

oh crap wrong window.

I ran a file duplicate check on my whole filesystem and I found a huge number of identical and duplicate *.pyc and *.pyo files. What's the point of distributing both versions in the rpm package? They should either distribute the optimized one or none optimized one. As far as I know if python finds *.pyo files it ignores *.pyc files. So its just a big waste of space distributing all the *.pyc files.

sahak, good point. file in bugzilla?

maybe I should ask fedora developers first
from fedora-devel channel

sahak, worth a shot.

sahak, they're not all the same btw. they're optimized when they can be.
sahak, for i in /usr/lib/python2.5/*.py; do diff ${i}o ${i}c; done

I noticed that. But even when they are not the same, *.pyc file is still not used by python if it can find the *.pyo file. Unless you are running in debug mode maybe?

Does anyone know of a Live CD Unix command line?

sahak, all of my files differ.
well
I mean, many

Sometimes I like to relive the old days ;-)

citiskyline_, slax

ferrum, what is that?

citiskyline_, http://merlin.fit.vutbr.cz/mirrors/slax/SLAX-5.x/special-editions/slax-frodo-5.1.8.iso
http://www.slax.org/download.php
it's a livecd distro. Frodo edition is command-line only.

yuck slax

ferrum, I think I'll go with Frodo.
I want something 100% CLI.

it basically has nothing but a cli and drivers.

ferrum, it's an emulator, not an os

what good is that?

shit

(you can respin your own iso with programs you want, of course. check the slax modules page)

anaconda just crashed :s

citiskyline_, slax is not an emulator.

the slax modules are built badly

livinded, yep. I don't use slax.

and most of them are made with checkinstall
I'm in the process of making a slackware compatable live distro

I made a livecd a few years ago that played frozen-bubble.. worked very well.

it's only going to be for repairing though
and it's gonna have some forensics tools

hi all, any 8800 users out there with 8800s working in sli?

ferrum, i'm talking about frodo
ferrum, sry for the misunderstanding

frodo is not an emulator. He is a hobbit.

ferrum, you said Frodo was an option
ferrum, and i found an emulator called "frodo" online

Frodo is the name of the edition of the SLAX livecd
citiskyline_, http://www.slax.org/

what a creative name

bleh :| my laptop got to 89*C

ferrum, ooohh! ok. thanks

[dEbug], my computer suffered thermal shutdown while installing gentoo

ferrum, my laptop gets really hot though
i'm not sure what i can do

buy a fan and put it underneath? open it up and clean out the accumulated dust?

hmm
whoamygod

you rang?

my laptop actually has a list of drivers that work with it
thank you hp

is there a config tool in fedora for setting up logging in to use a ldap server?
(fc6)

The program audit2allow is giving me the error "/usr/bin/checkmodule: No such file or directory". Anyone know if there's a package I need to have this?

checkpolicy

ty

for the record, I found that by doing "yum provides /usr/bin/checkmodule"

Oh cool, thats useful thanks

yeah reading man pages will find you a LOT of useful things

Bob-Laptop, some apps don't have man pages though

and some deveolpers should be slapped around until they learn to document their apps

pembo13_com, there's always info, /usr/share/doc, --help, and google.

zcat, good old google, sure
zcat, but man pages are accessible offline

Error: Caching enabled but no local chace of //var/cache/yum/fedora/filelists.sqlite.bz2 from fedora

pembo13_com, so are the 1st three i listed.

AeonIntention, run it as root.

ah

It needs to download a file list the first time.

pembo13_com, 'rpm -qd somepackage' turns up a lot of the same docs google would

zcat, quite true

hi

slt

zcat, comment about man pages wasn't to impy that other docs did not exist

this is a stupid discussion.

nuhuh ur stupid, stoopid

is it possible to rollback a yum rpm transaction like up2date has in rhel?

there is a downgrade plug in for yum, don't know if it works

I calculated.

how do I mount a floppy from command line?

At this rate, Gentoo will be installed in a week and two days
man mount

ferrum, thanks

ferrum that's the major downfall of source based distros
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

what's the type of a floppy?

"mdir"

dos

ferrum, I don't know. I'm a beginner to Linux/Unix in general.

you can also use "mcopy" to copy data from and to the floppy
no need to mount

That's pretty old-school

but it still works

hey all

Grummus, how does that work?

citiskyline_, "man mtools"

it's not installed.

you can also uncomment the floppy auto line in /etc/auto.misc, and then simply access /misc/floppy

it's installed on my f7 system, and i didn't installed it manually

weird...
o well.

how's f7's stability been. i've been holding off a bit cause it seems to take about a month to stabalize? anyone running livecd's?

crashdummyMCH, it says I need to specify the filesystem type.

crashdummyMCH, I installed from livecd, it's stable.

gnome or kde livecd?

crashdummyMCH, what do I do from here?

gnome

i believe the type is vfat for msdos...
citiskyline:mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

im running f7 without any issues thus far

i haven

has wireless nic card detection improved any?

2x 8800s wont run in sli, x server crashes right when it should say *SLI enabled*, works fine without sli option

well I installed the livna rpm and then yum install madwifi and it worked right off

is the 8800 even suported?

yes

hello everyone, where is the configuration file of the OpenVPN client on Fedora 7?

I know my 8400m is not

i'll have to keep that in mind. i think wireless support and power management are probably the 2 biggest problems for linux at the moment...but it sure has come a long way

not sure how the numbering works

I see the Network Manager have an option to connect the VPN network

Bob-Laptop, 8800 is over 6 months old, 8400 is a few weeks at best

but I don't know where the configuration file is located

I could NEVER get wireless to work right on any distro except this one

IC, I know this damn laptop is pretty fresh

really? even ubuntu??i've been really tempted to try ubuntu out but i've been a redhat guy since 6.5

I tried ubuntu and I did not like it at all.....
My favs thus far for desktop is mandrake and fedora. Server is centos 4

Bob-Laptop, so don't expect wonders, but nvidia usually offers at least a beta driver to run their new hardware when they release it, dunno if that is true for builtin laptop hardware

I really don't care about nVidia supporting it

dvd playback in f7 seems to be better too

nv is good enough for me

Bob-Laptop, you know who nv writes?
Bob-Laptop, right, nvidia

my 7800s are sli'ed fine, but my friends 8800s crash. his log file ends where mine says *NVIDIA SLI Enabled*

LOL

can't wait for f7 kde-livcd to finish downloading then

and i cant find anything on the nvnews forums

I have almost made the decision to switch my desktop over to linux instead of windows, but I need to test my games more.

cedega works great!

not so good for me

what ver?

5.2

i cant wait till i figure out how to have 1 7800 running xen host domain, and the second running in a windows guest

6.0 has vastly improved things

really?
guess im going to have to reinvest

check you wine first

wine doesnt work either

s/you/out/

thats one area im still trying to test out

the only thing cedega has over wine _currently_ is support for some copy protections

i dunno cedega seems to get things to install easier...just like things seem to play nicer when using crossover office
straight up wine has been hit or miss for me

same here, wine just doesnt work
and I cant get wine to uninstall all the way, it still left parts behind

i wish loki didn't go out of business they did a fantastic job at getting windows native games to run on linux

there is even a builtin uninstaller in wine, but you can always just remove ~/.wine

without wine

im interested to see how dosbox works
on linux
Well im going to try cedega again
see if I can get it to play the games

what game are you looking to get up and running?

don't forget to pay them your $5 every month

2 games: Microsoft Freelancer and Starcraft

i know starcraft works out of the box. not sure about feelancer
don't own it

freelancer is a pain in the butt
cant get it to run at all
on anything

...even windoz? lol

windoz?
how can you break a full screen application thats running?
its like its frozen application but you cant get out, other than hard reboot

ctrl+alt+f3
log in, "killall $programname"

does pam_xauth work for you guys, for su'ing to users other than root?

I got an error when trying to run system-config-users
system-config-users requires a currently running X server.
However, I am running X

yes, you should be in graphical mode to use a graphical client.
hum.
is DISPLAY set incorrectly?

Everything else works fine =/

PxWebDev, yes, dosbox is neat.

yeah I was hoping I can get it going to play all my old dos games

yay. my dosbox one-liner still works.

I run it on my windows machines, but never on linux

Hi folks

2ndreality one-liner: sudo yum install dosbox ; mkdir /tmp/2ndreality ; cd /tmp/2ndreality ; wget 'http://www.scene.org/file_dl.php?url=ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/demos/groups/future_crew/demos/2ndreal1.zip&id=1149' && wget 'http://www.scene.org/file_dl.php?url=ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/demos/groups/future_crew/demos/2ndreal2.zip&id=1151' && unzip -o 2ndreal1.zip && unzip -o 2ndreal2.zip && dosbox SECOND.EXE -fullscreen

ferrum, Future Crew

joke :P

I just copied FC7 rescuecd.iso to my flash drive. I'm running an Asus z9000. How do I boot from that drive so I can do the network install from it?

lol

Have I got it right that that's what I need to do?

johnfg, if your BIOS supports booting from flash drives, press F10 (or whatever it says during boot) to choose the boot medium, and select your key.

configure bios to boot flash drove should be good to go

I'm learning something :-) Never booted from there before (never needed to). I'll sign off and give it a try!
Thanks for the help!
I guess I'll be back if that's not an option in the bios.
TTFN!

hey everyone, I'm having some external wan issues with my icecast server
I set the iptables to allow port 8000 tcp, and an internal nmap scan reveals port 8000 open running icecast, but an external one doesn't show it
I have portforwarded port 8000 tcp to the host machine

perhaps a firewall or router blocking it

http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/8269/issuefm2.gif

wierd

Is a directory"

I know

change it from both to tcp

ok

Teh directory I'm trying to mount to is definately a directory.
The*

no dice

onexused, try giving it a little more info - 'mount -o loop -t iso9660 filename.iso /mnt/iso'

I get the same message

onexused, where are you trying to mount it to?

first, a folder on my desktop. Most recently, /mnt/iso, which I created before trying to mount it there.

it is a valid ISO, right?

I just created it with mkisofs. I assume it is, as I haven't had problems with isos created that way before.

check with "file cd.iso"

iso.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data UDF filesystem data (unknown version, id 'NSR0

looks fine

onexused, I'm thinking it's a problem with the iso itself, not the mount syntax

onexused isnt it the other way round?

iso"

mount -o loop iso mountpoint?

notice I tried both ways : )

now i have to find an iso :P

starcraft crashes to desktop when I try to go into Multiplayer

onexused, do you have another iso around?

/mnt"?

Nope, not without making another.
"mount: Not a directory"

that does not make sense

onexused you sure? i just tried it and the way you're doing it errors like you
mount -o loop /media/ /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/linux.iso

that's the wrong way around

media/: Is a directory
exactly

rephrase, please?

onexused wrong order

mkdir /media/iso; mount -o ro,loop -t iso9660 /usr/lib/vmware/isoimages/linux.iso /media/iso

dir

Did you try what openbysource said? I believe /media/ contains 'cdrom' ... thus you can't mount there... has to be empty.

onexused alright
lunitik no it doesnt

thanks for trying, but I still get 'not a directory'

that is simply stupid wrong

can ya tell what command you gave ?

I'm trying to mount to a newly created folder "/mnt/iso', not /media/.

dir) is the way I'm asking about. It returns "mount: Not a directory"
bdir) is the way I'm asking about. It returns "mount: Not a directory"/b

can ya still tell the command you gave exactly ?

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6064/mountrk3.png

onexused, do you use exactly the command as we give you or do you modify them (other than fill in the path to you .iso)?

onexused, Do you have high speed internet? Can you d/l a known-good ISO?

I only modify the iso path

giving a picture of that was not necessary

Did you 'mkdir /mnt/iso ?

unfortunately, I'm on 56k

you could have given the command

yes.
see the image, please

onexused, what does "ls -l /mnt/iso" say?

total 0
sorry, read your post wrong.
I did a 'yum update' last night, overnight. I don't think either mount or genisoimage were included, though.

vi /var/log/yum/log
*yum.log

Do you want it? Neither mount or genisoimage are listed.

there are yum.log.1 yum.log.2 yum.log.3 etc
merely showing you where you can look to see what was last updated

oh, okay.
This file mounts correctly using "mount -o loop" ftp://ftp.oss.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/bootfloppy.img (1440 KB)

still the error message from mount is very confusing and does not make any sense

This command doesn't have anything wrong with it, right? "mkisofs -o /tmp/iso.iso -J -r -V HSR -C 146102,155328 -M /dev/dvd folder"

Hello guys and gals.

Hello SAM_theboy

Its me, SAM_theman
hey Bob

onexused, try 'dd if=/place/for/files of=/tmp/iso.iso'
onexused, then try to re-mount it

: Is a directory"

I tried making the iso with mkisofs again, and got the 'not a directory' error with the new iso.

onexused, oh yeah... forgot that only works with filesystems... d'oh

I guess I could probably just use a GUI cd-writer, in which case I wouldn't have to mount the iso, but I don' wanna : )

onexused, try simplifying ... 'mkisofs -o /tmp/iso.iso /place/for/files'

okay, that worked. Any idea which option(s) is/are wrong, off the top of your .... Head?

onexused, too lazy to read the man page myself

lol, ok. I'll do trial and error. Thanks : )

onexused, another semi-satisfied customer
Is anyone else seeing stability issues with iwl3945?
(under Fedora 7)

you mean instability issues?

Bob-Laptop, well, yeah

stability is rarely an issue

heh

I supose it could be if you were running Windows

I've just had issues with ipw (I think that's it) dying on the laptop after being connected for a day or so.
seems like a problem with the firmware on the card

Bob I am looking into a IBM thinkpad

SAM_theman, What do you see?

I heard Linux (general) loves IBM
IBM Thinkpad T60p
maya supports it to

I bought ASUS

SAM_theman, I've got an HP - but the nc series (business-class) ... works great.

yoyo whats the gpu?

Hi everyone i hope you're all having a wonderful time

SAM_theman, ATI x-1600 (ick)

ahh
not bad

SAM_theman, but it works

I need somthing that is stable and will get the job done

Other than the fact that the model is so damn new most of the hardware is not supported it was a bargain at $1500

Is there any "standard" or "cool" lable for Fedora 7? I want to make several dozen copies of the Fedora DVD and i am wondering if there is something i can print on a CD label on my laserjet?

SAM_theman, no stability problems. IBM's just are not the same since the Lenovo thing.

O yeaH

(goofy question, i know, but i did not see anything like that at the linux media project)

My Lenovo works very well with Fedora

see the wiki, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki

what model?
*modle

DOH! Thanks Bob-Laptop :-)

v100 3000

oh,,,

12" core 2 duo

I like thinkpads because my pops had one
anyway i'll do some self research

I have an older A31 I still use

I picked this because I wanted a 12" widescreen, IBM didn't have any

SAM_theman, they're the standard 'corporate' laptop

I wish they were at work.... All Dell there :-/

SAM_theman, be careful of really new stuff... isn't always supported for the first few months of life

Khaytsus, still laptop-less here, but the dell latitude's near the top of my imaginary shortlist

SAM_theman, my HHP nc8430 is about 6 mo old and F7 just now works about 95% out of the box

i am sorry to be unimaginative, Bob-Laptop but i am searching the wiki for "Label" and "Lable" and no hits

14" LCD, Core2Duo T7100, 4 Gigs Ram, 160 Gig 7200 RPM SATA Drive

any idea what i might use as a search term?
that is an awesome machine Bob-Laptop

Yeah, they aren't bad.. I'd rather have a Thinkpad, but ah well..

artwork

My work laptop is a Lattitude X1, at least it's very portable

search for text not titles

great, Bob-Laptop i am glad one of us can think
wow 90 hits on that, good clue Bob-Laptop :-)

hi all.. i'm back, sorry for the username spamming if it did so.

true
getting the best thing may not be supported yet

SAM_theman, don't get me wrong... you can almost always make it work, but unless you like compiling your own kernel, it can be a real PITA

lol
I wish IBM supported NVidia in their notebooks
they seem to have ati in all of them

SAM_theman, yep. Not many choices in the big names for nVidia.

Apparently, my BIOS doesn't allow booting from a flash drive. A usb disk yes, but not a flash drive. What now?

file /usr/share/man/man1/gst-launch-0.10.1.gz from install of gstreamer-0.10.11-1.fc6 conflicts with file from package gstreamer-0.10.11-1.fc6 -- receiving this on an x86_64 system. It seems the x86_64 and i386 packages conflict. If I remove the i386 package, however, I still get the conflict. So I'm a little puzzled.

Anyone have any ideas?

whats your mobo?
and first of all is your stick empty ?
O ok dude do this
can you hear me?

Yes sir!

look where it says boot

hello everyone. I got a 30gb video ipod running rockbox. I've edited my fstab like so: /dev/sda1 /home/myname/usb vfat rw,user, noauto 0 0 however, when I do mount usb I got wrong fs type, bad option, ad superblock on /dev/sda1 anyone have a suggestion?

I'll look at the pic, but to try it I'm gonna have to leave ya for a while...

ok
I'll be on late
wait
my name is SAM_theman

The pic shows a lot more options under advanced than my BIOS, and I've got the latest for this mobo.
Am I hosed? as far as being able to boot from the usb flash drive?

trust me it easy
you have another computer???

Not here at present.

damn
where you live?

Maybe tomorrow I can get with you from the public library?
I'm in Montana.

Not the end of the world, but you can see it from here :-)

hello

Florida
yo davidfetter
lol

Are you gonna be around in the afternoons?

anybody know where i can get a recent spin of f7/x86_64?

yup
its summer break
I am free

I think I prefer Florida to Montana

What the heck is pscan2? And why is it taking so much of my CPU?

heck no

OK! I'll be back, Lord willing, tomorrow.
TTFN!

the lords will my friend
anyone here own a ps2?

plenty, i'm sure

uh ya

is it true u can play it on linux

play it?

hi, could someone help me install wine?

yes, play PS1 and PS2 games on your linux desktop

i need to upgrade my version

yum install wine

and wine-tools

hey all

great, will that write over the outdated version?

yo Broom

yes

is there a way i could interact with the terminal that was left open on the machine locally running a process?

bakers, thanks a ton

I'm sure there is an emulator somewhere

hmm..

the process has not finished and i want to see why

never done it

you know what I want to do?

pscan2... anyone? What is it?

google... only hope

bakers, it says there is nothing to do

"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed" (or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask directly: rpm -q package).

play PS2 on your computer?
rpm -qa | grep wine

I don't have ps2

as sudo?

but I can buy ps2 games
and put it on linux

doesn't matter

ok

but check this out

thanks

buy a PS2... it'll be a lot easier. Emulating a PS2 would be problematic

playing xbox 360 games on linux

mmm.. anyone?

strace?

bakers, i see a bunch of 0.9.36 packages
the latest is 39, right?

ok, strace would have been useful to run the command? but what if the command is already running?

That's the latest wine that's been packaged. I don't think .39 has been packaged
didn't it JUST come out today
strace -p [pid]

what do you mean by that?
39 is that new?

RedHat hasn't updated to the latest version yet
it's only been out for like 12 hours

The game developers for microshaft need to step down, because OS is comming toward them

wow
ok
thanks for informing me

did I miss something awesome?

bakers, let me ask you this, know if Quicken will run under wine?
