zzoid, is there an easy way to switch between beryl and compiz?

Still working on getting the pastebin into a file...Just a sec

You should get 1500-2000 for even weak hardware GL

yeah but its not shown there

Anyone know a good utillity or applet to connect to WiFi in KDE?

Do any of them have a version that would cause the problem you're seeing?

Does this mean Wine and steam are out of the question as well then?

As it stands I need to load Gnome and connect, then log out and launch KDE, not the most efficient way of doing things.

the top one
the 3194 regular kernel

I just found a video on youtube with someone running an xpress 1100 running Beryl =(

is fedora 7 working good or are there some bugs yet? I'm running fc6 now

Hi! I'm back.

so how can i remedy this?

rpm needs a way to know which kernel is running rather than what's installed. I run into this frequently when people install 2.4 kernels on a box for core analysis

it works. there always is bugs.

FC6 still has about 6.5 months left. Don't feel rushed to switch.
You could... remove kernel-xen.

I'm back up. Volume control still doesn't work. What else do I need to do?

OK, here it is, the command-line you have all been waiting for. You want to download everything to satisfy the installation of 'some_app' using rpms.
yumdownloader `yum deplist some_app | grep provider | sort -u | tr -s [:blank:] | cut -d " " -f 3`
No, really, no applause. I do it cause I love you

ok thanks for you advice. But I'm curious to try :P lol

Now you need to add the appropriate users to the audio group, and have them relog.

If you're running an ATI card.. stay at 6 =\

I have an nVidia
an Intel on my laptop

Then the support as always is excellent in that view, and the intel drivers work too, for the chipsets

kernel removed, do i need to reboot?

No.

OK - I'll be back in a minute.

PinTail_b, yumdownloader --resolve

ahh indeed, yum update is working now :P
thank you !

Damn it
I thought I was being so cool

guzu thank you

np

The only problem I've had with 7 is the lack of How-Tos and people using it for support

PinTail_b, cleverness acknowledged.

the yum update has a xorg update and selinux update, do i need to reboot for those? or just logout and in?

Restarting X is enough for the xorg update. The SELinux update is applied upon install.

oh ok I see. Well, I guess I can install it without problems then

I have another question actually.. if my Ath0 is not recognized, does that mean I can never get it working since it is only able to be enabled in WIndows?

ah
sorry =P

It's a bit out of date, but it should still mostly work.

Well, that fixed the problem of multiuser audio. Unfortunately, I can't seem to switch users back to my own user account (I'm using my brother's).

That's a completely different problem :P

When I try to switch, I get a background, a cursor, and my "Logged in" sound from GNOME, but that's about it.
Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you. :P

*shrug* I know nothing!

i forgot how to install tar.gz packages, it's been 2 years since I used linux..

Well, how about anyone else? Anyone have any ideas why GNOME would freeze when I try to log in?

You don't need to install anything. Just use File Roller.

It freezes after it displays the background and cursor, and after it plays the "Logged in" sound, but before the panels come up or the applets are loaded.

tar -xzvf file and view the README and INSTALL files for directions.

But only under one user. The other users are not affected.
Any ideas?

what's the file roller? =(

A compressed file browser kind of thing. Really handy.

I feel incredibly stupid whenever I enter an IRC channel haha

Applications | Accessories | Archive Manager

Can you try loading the fail safe profile?

Never heard of it. Where do I find it?

Well, there's 2 files in it, but I'm unsure on what to do with them.
There's nothing on the site, and no readme

Try reading the page completely.

You'll probably want to extract them from the file with File Roller. Then, they'll be regular files.

at the login screen there should be an option for selecting the session.

OK. Let me go check.

tyrok, i have had that problem, deleted the .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private, .gconf* directories, but that is where gnome keeps all of its settings so I would just move them if I were you

My wireless card is detected as Ethernet, is that ok?

i'm looking for help with my ftp server

you can try disabling applications in the startup of the session once the fail safe profile has loaded.

You mean the "Default System Session"?

i can't get it to do anything

ya

OK
I'll try those ideas. Hold on a second...

what do you mean it is detected at Ethernet? it is eth1? if so then, yes that is OK

it is

Looks like "Default System Session" still freezes. I'll try gened's idea now. Just a second...

3c501 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

Well ya, gened's idea will work

wireless is the only thing stopping me from being full time linux
If I got it to work, I enjoy the control of secure linux web hosting more than anything else, but wireless is a must for me

Uhhh, looks like I'm going to be one of those pain-in-the-neck oddballs on here.

Neither way worked.
I tried moving all of the dirs gened listed into a new dir "oldgnome". Still doesn't work.

tyrok, move the entire home dir the, and then just move your data back bit by bit, it works on a totally new profile right?

_Hybrid, do you have the dirver loaded into the kernel?
_Hybrid, does F7 detects your card
does ifconfig list the card?

That didn't even work.
However, it did still have my old background as the background rather than the default. I think I'll try restarting. I'll be right back.

F7 detects it
But when I use it, it says...

If there a GTK-Beryl lib?

3c501 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

_Hybrid, how are you trying to connect?\

I'll remember I'm on the essid step

tyrok, good to hear

than's we2by

_Hybrid, np

Any suggestions as to which files in particular would cause that?
I'll need to copy my old stuff back over.

tyrok, just copy over your data, and stay away from copying and .gnome stuff over
tyrok, panels, nautilus, stuff causes that

OK - thanks.

so what i am saying is unless it is an application . file dont copy it over, ie .vimrc would be fine, but not .gconf, or .gconfd

Hey, I saw a widget manager for gnome and kde and I think xfce too, but I do not remember the name.

gdesklets ?

sdodson, it is now. will see how long before yum pukes again.

I've got everything else copied (well, moved back actually). I think I'm going to need to restart though. Thanks for the help!

sdodson, oh YES! thanks

I'm back up and running, and it looks like the volume control still works. Thanks!
Bye!

still around?

does anyone know which gconf key/setting tells the "desktop effects" to start? Basically I need to switch it off manually, as using the gui causes a crash (and doesn't change the setting

hello :P
njpatel, not sure. You can always remove compiz.

yeah, that makes sense I suppose

does anyone know what the plan is for a KDE update to release 3.5.7?

seems like mugshot overloaded very frequent lately

No india for me. Bummer.

so, is this new kernel I'm presently getting through yum going to solve my opengl probs with my ATI card?

my system is so stable without Beryl :_)

I've noticed my firefox crashes a lot
but my real issue is total lack of opengl

Yanroy, that's caused by plugins and extensions. base firefox is stable.

ferrum, the only extension I have is the delicious buttons
oh, and flash

flash crashes mine.
(on occasion)

I was very happy to see that FlightGear made it into the F7 repos... but when I installed it and ran it, it complained about lack of opengl
so I'm stuck yet again
(I was here a few days ago with this same prob)

Yanroy, iirc the problem is with the drivers themselves, not with the kernel

ferrum, well, atm, I'm still using the supplied radeon driver because the ATI drivers for FC5 destroyed my system and I don't want to risk it again
is there no short-term solution to my prob until ATI releases the new drivers?

buy a nvidia card

as far as I know, that's correct.

or usa vesa
use*

can't buy a new card... it's a laptop
I have nvidia in my desktop

why on earth would you put an ATI card in a laptop? ;_;

does vesa give me hardware acceleration through opengl? and if so, how do I use it?

Yanroy, I don't believe so.

ferrum, ask sony

nope, no opengl with vesa

k :'(

anyone have trouble getting a movie dvd to play with a pic in F-7
.

how I remove kde desktop and install gnome?

Add/Remove Software on your menu

SAM_theman, you can have both, so unless you're low on disk space, there's really no reason to remove KDE first

sound buddie
its not working with sound

actually, if you're using the graphical add/remove tool, removing KDE before installing gnome is probably a poor choice

no it's not

Is there a /etc/modules file for fedora like in Debian? Where I can just add "aes", so the aes module loads when the system boots.

sam_theman is a domain host squatter?

hah. apparently

because modules are loaded on demand. And of nothing requires aes, there's no point loading it.
s/of/if

unless he's gotten his own link wrong

maybe an evil domain squatter stole his domain?
I've heard that's becoming more popular

Ya, it sucks

sid, usually I just add a modprobe line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Can anyone please point me to a mirror with a _complete_ set of programs for a ftp install for fedora 7? i've tried 3 already, and each of them are missing packages.
including the kernel.org one

no modules should require that hack that comes directly from the old XXth century -_-

Does anyone have any recommendations for laptops that F7 will be happy on?

perlmonkey2, define happy

perlmonkey2, Dell Inspiron E1405
it's beautiful, running it now

All the hardware is supportd

seven hours of battery life
wireless is broadcom, so works with ndiswrapper.

Wow......I'll look at it now. Thanks

None who can recommend a complete mirror?

perlmonkey2, aside from what is supposedly a minor hiccup with the video drivers, my sony s170 works great

make sure you get Intel gfx
upgrade to Core 2 Duo and make the HD 7200 RPM

Yanroy: Does Beryl run on Gnome pretty fast?

perlmonkey2, yes, flawlessly.
and quickly. It's awesome.

I'm not using beryl or gnome, so I wouldn't know. and my lappy is a couple years old, so the gfx card isn't state-of-the-art anymore

make sure you upgrade to core 2 duo, though. It's better for battery life and is faster.
umake sure you upgrade to core 2 duo, though. It's better for battery life and is faster./u

Looks like the 1405 has been replaced with the 1505

Hello, anyone who can recommend a site with a complete setup of packages for a ftp install?

perlmonkey2, no, 1505 was out when I was buying. It's a bulkier version.

Oh, then they must hide the 1405 to make the 1505 sell a little better.

hey there

ferrum, how old is your dell?

i have a rar file and i want to set a password so when i try to open/view the rar file it should prompt for password

Yanroy, a year

is this achievable?

iirc
wait, no

sigh

I got it in... March?

ferrum, in my experience, dells only last about a year... that's why I avoid them like the plague

none?

if I have my firewall open on port 25, sendmail running, and can telnet from a machine to itself and sendmail to users on the machine, but cannot telnet to 25 remotely, is it safe to assume someone is blocking my port 25 along the way?
or is there possibly some sort of configuring I need to do

linuxgeek_h, should be, but rar isn't available for f7 in livna yet.

I've got selinux on permissive

i'm using fc5 on this box
i downloaded a file which was a rar file

avegas_, irrc, a lot of "professional" networks block port 25 because it could be indicative of a spambot installed on the comp

i tried unrar e -ppassword file.rar

*iirc

thinking it would set a password to the archive

most ISPs block port 25 due to spam

avegas_, you should not be using telnet, anyway. SSHd supplants telnetd.

am i missing something or is my approach worng?

linuxgeek_h, unrar only unrars, it doesn't change rar files.

ferrum, just testing things

am i correct in saying to acheive my task, rar is the utility
uam i correct in saying to acheive my task, rar is the utility/u

linuxgeek_h, I would guess, and this is only a guess, that to do what you want, you need to extract the files and then re-rar them into a new rar file that is created with a password

or your mailer doesn't listen to anything but localhost
which happens to be the default in fedora..

AndyCap, so I should dig around in sendmail.mc?

to re-rar them,i would still need a rar utility don't i?

mm

AndyCap, thanks, you're the man

and in unrar man page whats the option -p[set password] do?

linuxgeek_h, is your end goal to protect some files or to create a rar archive? if you're just trying to password-protect some files, there are better ways

linuxgeek_h, specifies the password.

\msg AndyCap This would be the line to change, right:

in channel please..
or use a pastebin

is the password specified for the extracted files[i think it does],if yes, until i supply the password i will not be able to view the contents of the extracted files?

okay
just a line. so I'll paste

i want to protect files which happen to be .rar files

well, actually things are off in a vm, so it's easier to pastebin

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V440&l=en&oc=DNCWEL1&s=dhs
and it has Intel wireless
also swap 6-cell for 9-cell.

linuxgeek_h, linux has some very simple and elegant ways of making encrypted directories or filesystems

Hmm.....1505N? cool

perlmonkey2, and comes with ubuntu, so no MS tax

AndyCap, http://slexy.org/paste/3118

I have to go to Tom's and see the speed comparisons on these mobile chips. Not sure what the difference is.
Oh, heh. This is the model I was thinking about. Hah, I guess this is validation.

right line, but not sure what's the right candidate

okay, experiment time then

hi

how can I play mp3 with noatun?

Egads, $100 to upgrade form 5400rpm to 7200rpm same size HD. Can't I just not get a HD from them and buy one off newegg?

gpg -c somefile is a very simple solution

perlmonkey2, it's a small laptop-sized hard drive, but I don't see why not.

install the mp3 plugin for it -_-
see the man yum -_-

dunno which one install

there's a removable part on the bottom for swapping in/out hard drives.

guess ? I dont know what noatun is. Probably using gstreamer.

and you need to remake the m4 config into a sendmail.cf after editing with some make commande

thx, i was reading the doc now pgp gpg gaurdbot

linuxgeek_h, and for making entire encrypted filesystems, look at cryptsetup and its ilk

it uses arts
or alsa

AndyCap, yeah and I even have to install the sendmail-cf package first

you could go into the deep end and edit sendmail.cf directly...

AndyCap, I like my floatation devices thank you very much

alsa and arts sound backend. It has nothing to do with codecs.
_are_ sound backend.

hi folks, when I log into Gnome then I get a empty desktop.. after a lot of HDD activity a gre square shows in the top-left corner (looks like a popup / warning dialog box that fails to draw completely.. just it grey background) ... ~xsession-error shows a lot of ALSA related errors (cannot find soundcard '0') etc.... any help here?
uhi folks, when I log into Gnome then I get a empty desktop.. after a lot of HDD activity a gre square shows in the top-left corner (looks like a popup / warning dialog box that fails to draw completely.. just it grey background) ... ~xsession-error shows a lot of ALSA related errors (cannot find soundcard '0') etc.... any help here?/u
so all I get after a long time is just an empty desktop with that grey half baked dialog box (?) in the top-left corner

and it was working before? you can create a new user, see if the default settings work.

how do i get root on file browers, what is the command i use

for anyone who's interested, in order to receive mail from foreign hosts one must delete the Addr option from the aforementioned line, and then
make -C /etc/mail/ ;

get a root terminal, nautilus

and then restart sendmail

nautilus, thanks

I think did a chmod -R 0777 /home/rob/ a long time ago (from a SSH Putty remote terminal) attepting to get access to /home/rob/shared/ or something like that.. now today I tried to login locally and this problem showd up: no more desktop

is there somewhere where i can get this info besides asking yall each time?

well, there's a howto for making a root file manager launcher at http://fedoranews.org/contributors/matt_hansen/nautilus/

chmod 0777 is never needed. It's a stupid thing to do.

robdeman, you could have just hard-linked the folder

especially with -R

indeed.

I know that 0777 is stupid. But, I added a adduser rob2 amd that user has the same problem

fedorared what i'm talking about is like.. aliases that the programs use.. for example the text editor uses gedit, and file browser uses nautilus, is there some list i can have to show all the "aliases" to address programs

list of the generic names? not really. you can dig around in the *.desktop files I guess

Preferred applications

AndyCap, i don't have "more preferences" and beyond

Preferred applications.

not running gnome then? (or is this F7, which I haven't tried yet)

i'm Fedora 7

They separated everything out neatly in F7... Why haven't you trued it? Just haven't gotten around to it?

takes time to get free space etc.. only have my mythtv backend on F7 yet
utakes time to get free space etc.. only have my mythtv backend on F7 yet/u
Personal? ho-hum
somebody needs to make some hard decisions on the prefs menu.

There is personal host and Look and Feel... which makes sense... Internet, and then the two that should be merged.

System is Power Management, which you can access via Screensavers in Look and Feel... it should be in Hardware at least to cut down menu's...

Hardware should be cut

robdeman, iirc, there are some options somewhere to prevent you from logging in if your home dir is set to be world-writable. I use KDE, not gnome, and I only came across these options accidentally right after I installed F7, so I'm not sure if it's related to your prob

lunitik, makes most sense if everything is merged into System.

can you tell me if fedora core 6 has a limit of 32 characters for a file name, and how i can raise that limit if possible?
i'm trying to upload a file to my ftp server, and it works for most files, but one file i'm trying to upload is 35 characters long, my ftp log shows it being uploaded, it just doesn't show up anywhere

does anyone know why /boot is ext3 by default instead of ext2?

also,how can I disable ALSA?

robdeman, right click on the gnome volume applet and select "Preferences", then change the device to OSS.

I think those kind of limits depend on the file system and the server host software, not that it's Fedora
it's got journaling?

I cant loginto Gnome b/c ALSA crashes... GDM fails

fedorared, my boot partition requires journaling?

you're free to use whatever you want

true, just curious.

ext3 default across the board is simplest I guess
you checked your ftp server settings for the destination directory?

do I really need sendmail on my system?

brb

I don't know, do you?

I don't use evolution to check mails. I only use my webbrowser

thunderbird B-)

so...

we2by, you don't need sendmail even to check mails with evolution..

can I use a fc yum repo on a 'scratch' linux and expect things to work?

so I can disable sendmail from startup?

what is 'scratch' linux?

faceface, define "scratch"

ferrum, a linux web hosting distribution made and maintained by 2 guys with a specific set of requirements that do not apply to me
namely, every single installed app should run on about 10 different arch

If the rpms install on it, sure why not

faceface, yum has dependencies. If you can fulfill the dependencies, then it should work.

heh... they specifically didn't want rpm on their distro

Then a Fedora repo won't be very useful.

that is why I am installing rpm and yum into $PREFIX...

if you let yum do everything, you'll basically wind up with a fedora system (minus some hardware configuration)
(and kernel, other systems, blah.)

ferrum, OK
that is fine by me ^TM

why not just install fedora then and save yourself the time _

seems like I finally got rpm installed
ferrum, install fedora at work? are you crazy man?

faceface, you're running some linux that doesn't even use packages, that sounds much more crazy

whats wrong with linux hosting at work?

install a tried and tested linux with 100's if not 1000's of developers over some crappy system developed by 3 guys?

at work, i play with mac and linux B-)

you are too crazy!

A few people can do great things.

fedorared, not thes guys

haha

I mean, it is usefull for them to controll everything
they have 100's of users and mostly they are not developers

faceface, I feel your pain :[ I've been waiting for two days for gentoo to finish compiling.

What is the advantage of this scratch linux hosting then?

do these guys at your job have "W1nD0z$ $eVeR R4Ck'$" on their wall?
$erV3R actually
darn misspelling

the scratch linux distro helps them controll the multi arch archeteccture and central fs

do you have anyone running Zod from a pendrive yet?

What arch support do you need?

i.e. all software should work on all systems including all cpu farms and have constent access to all disks etc etc

i wonder if i got any snail mail today.....brb

fedorared, put it this way, they will never surrender 'their' linux to something decent like fedora

faceface, hooray, but why are you using it?

there's an isotostick.sh script out there, I think it works on the FC6 live CD

ferrum, I thought they would let me run fc when I started work there and now I don't want to quit over an os

I already have it working - with Innotek Virtualbox in Vista

o_O

wel... I trying to get yum installed ... thanks for help

I recommend you install fedora then remove any references to the word "fedora" and all fedora-specific artwork

ferrum, I don't know how to set up the automounting stuff ... besides they would notice other things

what company is this?

back

The glorious "Max Planck Institute"
one institute runs this linux
now... how do I install yum

yum insta... oh

eh

faceface, they're not using scientific linux?

download the .rpm and extract

heh I mean

dang... I can't get Fedora to install, it keeps overheating during the process! 102C was today's highest

woohoo! pay stub

tobi1canobe, nope

I guess I'm going back to Noobuntu

idiots

that means i got paid

[debug], put your computer in the freezer

ferrum - here's how it works

ouch...102C?

tobi1canobe, I feel so

my sys temp is 117F

ferrum, well, I opened up the laptop's case today, and I put canned air all through it, but no success.. it was pretty clean I guess

Innotek virtualbox lets you run a virtual PC

103deg F

meh
i dunno

[debug], does fedora complain about ACPI?

ty, thanks for sympathy

but thats why fedora's not working

bye

gl

so in essence you could have those complaints if I were running it on a Mac too...

ferrum, no, its just installing fine, then it goes and does a.. Critical temperature reached (102c) or something like that

turn on the air conditioning in your house and put a fan onto it

[debug], submerge your computer in a flowing stream of distilled water

no ferrum

hell no!

he has to put it in condensed water

i run the smc fan control on my macbook at work

actually, tw2113, it is distilled water :p

it helps keep the temp down by spinning the fan faster

do they make water cooled laptops?

[debug], not sane people

damn

haven't had a problem with the hp laptop i'm using right now with f7 on it

alpha255, what model is it?
anyway, bbl

dv1000

[debug]: liquid cooled yes. water no

which is more important, system temp or cpu temp?

depends on which components you care more about
heat is bad

tw2113, both are important

my sys is 118, and an orange color for my temperature graphic
my cpu is 88 and green

Add more fans.

i have my side panel open and a small box fan blowing on it right now

if sys temp is higher than cpu temp start worrying

i have a bit to worry about with a 30F difference

tw2113, well, my laptop was ~215F XD
its sitting on an a/c vent atm

good idea

why fedora 7 report my HDD as sda but it is hda?!?!

no it is sda

I know what i am talking it is ATA on all linuxes it says hda, and on previous fedoras but on 7 it says sda!?!?

if you read the release notes you would see that F7 has switched to the libata driver for old IDE PATA controllers

pardon...

i prefer all being sda

and the drive is sda.. whether or not it is a scsi device is another matter. ;-)

PATA is now sdX as well to match almost every other driver out there.

AndyCap, do you have any idea whether or not the sendmail in fedora is compiled with support for libmilters?

no clue.

[debug], the naming really doesn't matter

unless you're upgrading

Via yum.

somehow I don't believe anaconda does a perfect job of it either

yep, i forgot about the move to sda too

AndyCap, fyi, it indeed was
anaconda does a lot better of a job than a lot of other installers though

doesn't the debian installer use anaconda?
sarge or something like is where it was started?

the new gentoo gui installer is pretty horrendous
guess it isn't that new anymore

avegas_, tried using it last night
woke up this morning to a conflict between USE flag thread and sharedmem :3

folks, I installed xbmsp (XBOX MEdia Center streaming protocol) which runs at port 1400 ... now everytime I run sudo apt-get update.. etc.. it says... "Connecting to xbmsp://charmap:1400/" ... "locale: Can't connect to host charmap." ... and then it just continuoes doing apt-get's normal stuff.... what on earth could cause this??

wow am i dreaming? F7 has ntfs support and it is RW fuseblk?

avegas_, the terminal-based install works though.

ferrum, yeah, I put together a little gentoo vm

Ask the apt-rpm maintainer.

ferrum, at some point I'm going to make a nice little vmware gentoo box and publish it

I installed xbmsp y hand, from a source package from sourceforge.net

avegas_, that just takes all the fun out of the experience

any way to speed up the boot process?

also kinda destroys the point of defining all the flags and options yourself..

we2by, don't shutdown, hibernate

we2by, use initng instead of init

lol

http://search.vmware.com/search?q=gentoo&filter=0&btnG=VMTN+Appliance+Search&restrict=&output=xml_no_dtd&sort=date%3AD%3AL%3Ad1&ie=UTF-8&btnG.y=12&client=vmtn_appliance&num=10&btnG.x=15&oe=UTF-8&proxystylesheet=vmtn_appliance&site=vmtn_appliance

ferrum, what is the difference?

ferrum, gentoo's great for one off image replication

ouch, long url

we2by, it's a totally different system. It runs startup scripts in parallel.

fedora uses yum for package management .. if you installed something from a tarball why do you thinkk "apt-get update" will work?

ferrum, just an advanced version of lfs really

AndyCap, the fun of the trip would be in the journey

ferrum, how do I switch to initng?
should I install initng first?

anyone having trouble with playing a movie dvd and getting a pic in F-7?

we2by, yum install initng

ehrm you right, wrong channel sigh (using more than 1 linux box here ... )

zodiac, there's a deeper question... why on earth is he connecting via that protocal

we2by, it installs a new kernel option. When you're booting, choose that option.

ah, okay
can't wait to reboot

ferrum, does it use the same scripts in /etc/init.d/ or different ones?

tobi1canobe, different ones.

what package do i need for this? ./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

we2by, hope it works last bug report I filed for it it was outputting everything in Cyrillic

lol

yum install firefox

aldin, yum install compat-libstdc++

i know that but would like to... thanks ferrum

Bad ferrum!

why ?

You shouldn't be installing external binaries for anything in Fedora except under exceptional circumstances.

nevermind... btw didi this and it works hehe yum install libstdc++.so.5

if you had installed ff from yum this wouldn't be happenkng
*happening

it pulled this

aldin, yes it works, but you shouldn't go outside the RPM database.

compat-libstdc++-33.i386 0:3.2.3-61
i know, so what i just use it localy?

zodiac, you can lead a horse.....

aldin, all programs you install should be installed through yum or RPM.
no compiling from source, unless there is no other option.
and then it's advisable to configure with --prefix=/opt

that's one of the reasons why i've limited my input here.

ok thanks

zodiac, i find however that horses love to be led off of cliffs

i noticed

i just want to watch my movie

yarddog, yer in a movie!
yarddog, good for you

bah

are ye a pirate?

got a lot of errors

arrrrrrrrr

we2by, what are the errors?

did someone mention pirates? http://pbfcomics.com/archive/PBF086AD-Yarteries.jpg

ferrum, I didn't pay much attention, but there are a lot of errors
including segmentation fault at the end

we2by, hum. It works for the maintainer so he doesn't know what to be fixing.
if you can wrap up a bug report that'd be helpful

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

there has to be a reason for this

is there some meta package which would pull all KDE development libraries

anyone having trouble with playing a movie dvd and getting a pic in F-7?

or is there some yum command ekvivalent to apt-get build-dep on debian?

yarddog, check out fedorasolved.org

been there....something exact there?

works for me each time yarddog

what does?

their howtos

i have everything installed already
i have sound, its running, but no pic
ive tried mplayer, totem, vlc, and more
no pic

yarddog, what video driver are you using

ive looked in forums, ive used the email list too
its the fedora radeon one from f7
no fglrx yet for F7

can some one recommend me a simple mp3 player, one simpler than xmms

i have dri too

yum grouplist / groupinstall

yarddog, have you messed with the configs in xorg ? I had problems with one option

preferable one that uses gtk2

Did you log the bug?

where?

I am in a spot of trouble! I have everything updated to fedora 7 but the f7 kernel hangs when I try to run it. The DVD hangs after I pick my keyboard and I was unable to get any better results building my own initrd.

audacious is a gtk2 xmms clone

/topic

So I'm depending on the kindness of strangers.

beep media player

Quick question, is it possible to upgrade from fedora 4 directly to 6? Or would the recommend path to upgrade is 5 first, then 6?

sorry i dont understand grouplist

snappy, recommended upgrade bath is fresh install
path*

can u give me example, lets say i need to compile knemo 0.4.8 (KDE apps)

yarddog, here's my xorg.conf http://rafb.net/p/mLYcu726.html

heh yeah, not really an option when it's remote, but unfortunately needs to be done.

there are a few predefined groups, a KDE development one among them
you could update the existing package to 0.4.8 and rebuild

linear: dm-linear: device lookup

thanks ill look at it

am I missing a module in my initrd, I wonder.

banyan, that's an upgrade right?

yes, which I tried to do by the dvd, but anaconda hangs after I choose my keyboard.
so it was a yum upgrade...

im going to see if xorg needs editing, if not, ill file the bug.

not my preferred choice.

banyan, the old kernels are still arround?

I'm running on one now!

how to do that
sorry i am newbie in rpm /yum world, i am kind "expert" in apt-get

banyan, oh, cool. You found a bug in the new kernel, file a bugwilla

um, really?

banyan, not that many people use linear lvm I guess
sorry dm-linear. whatever that is

describe what apt-get build-dep does so we can describe equivalent functionality

Do I just need to build a --with= into the initrd?

How do I grab a file off of another Linux computer and move it to the home directory on the FC6 Laptop I'm using now?

morghanphoenix

scp

oops

yum install xmms-mp3 that will allow rythumbox to play mp3s?

I'm logged in to the computer that has the file with SSH, sitting in the directory but can't figure out scp

i have livna rpm installed

No. rhythmbox uses gstreamer.

no. gstreamer-plugins-ugly

ahh, thanks!

No zeroconf built in to the host or I'd just mosey on over with konqueror and copy it, just a wee bit of a newbie here

scp remotehost:/path/file ~

banyan, what module do you think is missing from the initrd?

Fedora development seems to be up to knemo 0.4.7

http://www.fotothing.com/mmmstreaker/photo/6680c4510101ff84102dcf8e7883aa13/
stuning image
;o

morghanphoenix, or.. if you need a gui way.... you can use gnome desktop's connect to server feature and open an ssh network connection

off topic.

morghanphoenix, and drag and drop the file using the standard file manager inerface

what's the way to shrink an nfts partition to make room for linux?

Well, it's moving it somewhere used scp (IP#):/home/user/file.zip ~ while logged in to the other machine.

you can`t be serious all the time

one way it to use ntfsresize from a live CD.

Can I be serious for him?

doesn't that need aeroconf built in though to do the GUI transfer, my host is a really old computer that just has lots of space on it.

NetworkManager takes down my wlan, eth1, is there some way i can make it not do that?

morghanphoenix, gnome just access a ssh connection... just like scp does

maybe one that allows linear device lookup.
I am guessing.

No. Neither gnome-vfs not fish should need anything external.
*nor

morghanphoenix, so if scp works.... gnome's connect to ssh server will work
morghanphoenix, you just haveto know the ip or dns name.... before hand

Using KDE

morghanphoenix, because you aren't browsing the network.. you are opening a specific connection to a specific computer somewhere on the net
morghanphoenix, well if yer using kde... i cant help you.. outside my experience

though I hope this scp thing I just did is working, sure transfered 2 gigs somewhere allready.

banyan, have you had a look at what was in the f7 initrd?
ubanyan, have you had a look at what was in the f7 initrd?/u

sweet music!

I couldn't remember what a person had to do in order to do that.

Not having the problem of massive speed drop offs on copys after 200MB on the new computer

Was gonna.

it's a nice touch adding a music folder in the home of the user
f7 is really nice; very polished and impressive; thank you!

alpha255, new xdg standard developed through freedesktop.org discussions... the xdg directories are re-definable

nice

alpha255, personally... i hate them

I found the answer: Option "HWCursor" "off"

i could always go in and edit /etc/skel and customize to contentment

boogerhead, Right oh mate! So yer up and running with no further issues?

|DrJef|, why?

alpha255, look in /etc/xdf

absolutely!!!

alpha255, look in /etc/xdg
alpha255, if you want to play with the default xdg settings

so when you decide to re-install F7 (for what, the eighth time, ninth time?) you won't have such a headache!

alpha255, the xdg settings assume per user home directory layout

I was pretty sure it was all xorg.conf, but I just couldn't put a handle on it until I checked the man pages on nv

alpha255, doesnt allow for a common shared location on multi-user systems

Thanks again for helping me, check you later

|DrJef|, aahh

boogerhead, Well pat yerself on the back, go out and have ya a few Budweisers (yech) a thick ol'Texas steak and shoot a few road signs!

alpha255, so on a family system..where you want to say have a dedicated disk for a comprehensive music library..and let people build playlists from that.... its sucks ass

later!!!

what about a shared samba directory

Where is Gnome's desktop connect?

?

alpha255, the directory definitions... are relative to home directory

morghanphoenix, look under places pull down

alpha255, according to the xdg standard
alpha255, "relative"

|DrJef|, ahh yes, good point

http://pastebin.com/930421

Places menu.

network manager deactivates eth1, is there any way to find out why?

alpha255, so its somewhat short sited..and gets in the way of more mature multi-user systems or home networks that make use of network storage

or is that just what it does

OK I built another initrd with --with= for every one of my currently running modules, for 3228.f7.

|DrJef|, good pint
pint = point
gotta go

alpha255, im already running into this with my wife's computer with music and photos... because i have a dedicated network disk so we can both get access to these

Places - Connect to Server?

Gonna try rebooting.

morghanphoenix, i thought you were using kde

|DrJef|, yes, shared storage is a big thing especially with music, video and pictures all needing space
speaking of wife
gotta go

I switched to Gnome, though I know nothing at all about it, it is on there.

honey -do list needs another thing crossed off
nice chatting

server would be the IP address of the host, yes? No idea what port to use or what folder User Name and Name to use for connection should have filled out in them
Ah, there it goes

where can i find yummed rpms.. i'd like to archive them

/var/cache/yum

thanks, but it seems that they are deleted after install?

Depends on your yum config settings.

Thanks for the help, file is copying now

how to define it to not "clean"

Not a clue. Read the man pages.

ok
how to rebuild knemo to v0.4.8?

what's the most current par2 and rar?

evening
u read me?

No. Can't see a word yer typin

o.O strange

Yeah. Psychic

i have no browsing no msn not even another irc server working
how come
only freenode hehe

Dunno - have you checked your SELinux settings?

on this machine m on windows cause of my 3d work

GD77, I'd be checking that and the firewall settings.

itis sudden now o.O hehe shish

GD77, Well, when ya reboot into FC, check that - the SELinux settings and firewall settings.

ill fireup vmware and check fc6 connection hold hehe

I'm doing a 'yum update' after installing F7 and adding Livna repo... I get this warning: warning: /etc/pam.d/system-auth created as /etc/pam.d/system-auth.rpmnew Should I worry about this?

nah

It just means "system-auth has local modifications, so I'm not overwriting the file by the one from the new rpm".

GionnyBoss, generally no..but you may want to review the rpmnew file
GionnyBoss, and compare it to the old one

oh ok I understand
thank you

GionnyBoss, this happens.. when a configuration file... has local changes in it... rpmnew files are created instead of disturbing the config

ok I see

GionnyBoss, rpmsave files are created when the package overwrites the config

Hello, I am trying to set up my Fedora Core 7, now that I have Internet in Fedora

thanks |DrJef|

bioeng, what's the problem?

First of all, I want to use ndiswrapper to install my Linksys Wireless-G card
Secondly, I want to start using RSS

bioeng, www.fedorasolved.org

I have another problem, but I guess I have to fix it later when my update will finish...

bioeng, have you been to fedorasolved or fedoraforum yet?

Not yet, I am new to this because of previous Internet connection problems in Fedora

In the firstboot configuration, sound card worked fine. Then, after a reboot, it is only recognized my webcam microphone and I have no devices for my soundblaster live. What can be the problem?

yay, it worked

haha I think I ve found it I thin it is a port issue from my isp mikrotech box -.-

what would cause some entries in /etc/crontab not to be run? When I run it manually it works. Full paths to all binaries are used, also. service status reports: crond (pid 2574) is running...

Check the mail sent to root.

can someone please tell me where I can find a download of the CD-ROMs of FC7? All I can find is the DVD

There are none.

MappyPants, the LiveCD

Whenever I try to use yum, I get the following text
http://pastebin.com/930441

did that, and nothing reported.

Download the dvd, mount it as loopback, then burn the iso's on the dvd. As I hear. I'm all about the year 2000 and have a DVD drive myself.

This would help me better use fedorasolved

bioeng, the adobe-linux repository seems to be malfunctioning. Remove it.

Did you check if they even *have* a x86_64 repo?

Oh
I remember they did not have an x86_64 repository
How do I get it off?

fc7 yum update?

Maybe the depreciation of some of the auth functions.... Security = SHARE is gone I think, iirc.
Might go through swat and reconfigure

Hello, I'm looking for some assistance with setting up wireless. I'm using FC6 and my hw is an hp pavilion ze4430 with a broadcom card BCM4306. I followed the instructions at http://fedoramobile.org/fc-wireless/bcm43xx-yum-extras but the card won't activate. Has anyone else had similiar issues that they were able to resolve?

thats not the only problem tho, nmbd doest even start with samba

mnixxon, yes. I used ndiswrapper instead.

ferrum - do you know a link to a site with instructions about how to use ndiswrapper?

I'm feeling lucky

Thanks, I'll give it a go...

I can't seem to get adobe-linux repo off of yum. What command will do this?

I have a WD USB external HD. How can I make it shared over samba when its plugged in in F7?

bioeng, how did you add it?

I opened the rpm file to install Adobe Flash from Adobe website

what was the name of the rpm?

I put every currently loading module in my initrd for f7 and it still did the dm-linear thing.

Find the file in /etc/yum.repos.d and run rpm -qf against it.

so I booted with the rescue thing.

ok, thanks

I don't know what the command line options are for anaconda and the --help doesn't help.
So, poop.
Oh, and my raid drive doesn't load automatically anymore.
I have to run mdadm and also tell it all the devices despite that all the info is already in my mdadm.conf.
so, I'm stuck for the time being running fc6 kernel on f7.

So no ideas for me?

All right, cool, it's fixed
Thanks

Same way you share it if it were a fixed disk.

petafile, set up a samba share on it.

how do I do that?

yum install system-config-samba
and samba-client

thanks

Missing Dependency: xine-lib = 1.1.6 is needed by package xine-lib-extras-nonfree
I'm running yum update --exclude=xine-lib-extras-nonfree,xine-lib but this error still appears
what am I missing here?

--exclude does not take multiple packages?

got it working :P

You can't have the extras without the main package.

it's the xorg.conf
you were right about the Xv
but in the conf

ferrum, that xinelib conflict lasted for several days, but cleared up yesterday when livna updated

has anyone else had trouble installing F7 in VMWare?
the installation doesn't recognize disks for some reason

Use the BusLogic controller.

are you using scsi or ide ?

in vmware, scsi
should i be using ide instead?

need to use the non-default driver

yeah, i'm using the default
so why did FC6 detect it fine and F7 not?
just so that I know for future reference

I believe, what ivazquez said

The install kernel doesn't have the driver for the LSI Logic controller.

oh that's weird
that's like most of my raid cards
good thing i run freebsd on my servers

yeah, good thing

so, did the devs just decide not to include that support in the kernel?

Hey, anyone know of a guide to install ipw2200 drivers?

in F7, they are kinda busted

It's in the kernel. Just install the firmware.

other than this tiny little hiccup, i'm quite impressed with F7 overall so far

[debug], ipw2200 seems to just work "out of box" in f7

as long as i can get it onto my laptop, not much else matters

connect even

daMaestro, no it doesn't :''(

it does for my friends thinkpad

and it's flakey at that

well I have an HP :p

doesn't for my thinkpad

it worked in noobuntu

there are a couple bugs about it

malikeye, are you using networkmanager?

yep

is network manager the one that comes standard?

yep

hmm
fedora's really not seeming as easy as i thought .

it seems if you use a backlevel firmware it fixes it
but I haven't gotten that to work either

what.. firmware?! why the hell do you need to change the firmware -_-

still Democracy broke?

don't ask me

CRASH69, no. i spy -10 in updates.

actually, it's not the firmware, sorry... it's the driver
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=241934

CRASH69, but keep and eye out for a dbus-python update too (currently in updates-testing), because it breaks Democracy again.

malikeye, i am also having issues with secure networks and NetworkManager

danm dependencies :P

malikeye, yum install wifi-radar and see if it allows you to connect
malikeye, but i am using ndis wrapper with a bcm4318 ... so i just thought it was me

it's back to FC6 at this point

ah

I'd have to reinstall

wimp ;-)
j/k

does that fix it for you ?

how to install ati drivers (fglrx) i have livna repositories?

aldin, fedora 7?

I have no problem reinstalling

yes F7 KDE

aldin, they are known not working

busted

aldin, we get to wait for an update from ATi

use the radeon driver
best we got at this point

aldin, the only "workaround" is to downgrade the Xorg version

ugh
good luck with dat

malikeye, radeon doesn't work for my device

what about compiling from source from ati.com?

radeon works here

radeon works fine for me

aldin, a) you don't compile from source
aldin, b) no.. the livna kmods are from ati.com

there is no source

radeon works for me to
but want beryl...

malikeye, d;-)
aldin, if radeon works.. beryl should

whatever.. i get module compile from ati.com drivers

compiz comes with radeon

aldin, glxinfo|grep direct

modules != driver

yes

my card isnt supported 3D with radeon driver

that's just the conduit to the driver

aldin, ok.

what's the card?

x200

yup.. same here

beryl will work with radeon

really slow though

5.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955
normally i use Xgl
but hope ATi finally does aiglx support

5.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955

i have not tested if fglrx is working with Xgl
i guess i should really do that

i use xgl and fglrx all the time... ubuntu, mandriva suse etc

aldin, ideally we want aiglx support

with the old xorg

anyone here use NetworkManager-vpnc ?

i know hehe

|DrJef|, yes

|DrJef|, yup

i can get the cmdline vpnc to work... but NM is throwing an error about not being able to start the vpn command

loupgaroublond, too fast for me

daMaestro, wtf am i doing wrong

|DrJef|, you need /etc/vpnc.conf

daMaestro, lovely

|DrJef|, it is a bitch that way

daMaestro, what do i need in it?

daMaestro, i challenge you to a typeoff! rawr! :P

daMaestro, do i need a config..per vpn network?

|DrJef|, i have no idea ;-)

|DrJef|, try # touch /etc/vpnc.conf

|DrJef|, i just know that nothing worked till i had something in /etc/vpnc.conf
|DrJef|, yes... an empty file might work too
i'll check that now

daMaestro, it doesn't see /etc/vpnc/default.config?

no.. i don't know why

|DrJef|, it also seemed to work out of the box on our clean installs of f7 in our office

loupgaroublond, this one is pretty clean

loupgaroublond, yup... just touch /etc/vpnc.conf

loupgaroublond, fresh install like 2 days ago

err |DrJef| ^

daMaestro, god thats stupid

mhm, still broken.... Democracy-0.9.5.1-8.fc7

CRASH69, yeah.. run it as root
;-)
lol... i have no idea why.. so lame.

|DrJef|, that's why NetworkManager is still not yet v1.0

networkmanager, in concept is awesome... can't wait till it matures a little bit more

anyone knows if exist way to start xchat in english language ?

CRASH69, your mirror just doesn't have it yet. # repoquery --repoid=updates list Democracy
Democracy-0:0.9.5.1-10.fc7.i386

do u have laptop or desktop?

loupgaroublond, fan of jim butcher novels?

NM-openvpn is nicer then.

|DrJef|, never heard of them

cause of ur card whic is same as mine

loupgaroublond, your nick suggested otherwise

is he french?

aldin, laptop.. what do you expect

"Werewolf boyfriend"

loupgaroublond, nope...

aldin, the xpress is the integrated systems chip

ivazquez, not quite, wanna take a second guess? :P

perhaps there is desktop integrated

Not really.

ha

aldin, i doubt it (but maybe)
this would be a pretty weak chipset for a desktop

i though x1600 is only on PCI-E, but i saw it on my friends IBM laptop?!?!

our devices go over pcie

what are you talking about ?

lol.. thanks malikeye
aldin, i can do an Xgl build for you .. if you will test it and report back?

really? hehe
i meant on PCI-Es
not xgle hehe

lspci shows PCI, AGP, PCMCIA, and PCI Express devices.

most latest laptops use pci-express

so this part doesn't work? NetworkManager makes deployment of VPN easy. It supports Cisco .pcf files, so administrators may simply distribute .pcf files to users.

do i have just to put "# repoquery --repoid=updates list Democracy" on terminal?

ok, if so than it is all right

does anyone have pm-utils.athlon showing up with yum list extras?

agp is almost dead

daMaestro, do you know anything about doing true font hinting in fedora (alternative packages for libfreetype etc...)

AGP was never that great an idea in the first place.

i need good fonts too

ivazquez, neither was childbirth

anyone knows to fix it please?

aldin, http://avi.alkalay.net/linux/docs/font-howto/Font.html

Things like FC-AL. SATA, and PCI Express are the way to go.

FC-AL ? that fibre channel ?

Yep.

arbitrated loop

http://www.myfonts.com/

thanks i will look it

SATA is really nice.

though parallel serial of PCI-e seems a little ugly.

Oh, and SAS as well now.

loupgaroublond, no

no, i need nice hinting... not lot of fonts hehehe

sas kinda sucks

daMaestro, you use stock fonts?

hm, pm-utils.athlon has a crapload of deps, too

yes

well, not really sucks... I guess I've been burn by the hardware, which jades me
s/burn/burnt/

i must say i am very pleased with acpi and powernow on F7... it works just as it should be ( iam on laptop)

Japanese characters in an out-of-the-box F7 are impressively more beautiful than in Windows XP.

hmm. vlc multicast broke on my between fc6 and f7 ...

hi. I'm Jason. I'll be your whiner for tonight.

shinji-kun: good for you. I just think it's cool that other charsets show up at all.

Anyone had any trouble with lightscribe in F7? The lightscribe applications cannot see my drive, it worked fine in FC6.

since i unfortunately can't read any of it.. :/

I'm learning, and there is a very good online dictionary.

oh. duh. unsupported vid format. [00000340] main packetizer error: cannot create packetizer output (FMP4)

fc-al seems bad... rings / loops aren't good

uuh, why not?

single point of failure

not more so than others

well, in hub style, there wouldn't be a single point of failure
nothing is relying on the other to communicate

I take it you think token ring networks aren't reliable.

I do

well, token-ring wasn't really reliable in practice.

they work, but they are old skool

hm.

I used to use token, it sucked

better than thin-coax ethernet tho.
"The Token Ring network was originally developed by IBM in the 1970s. It is still IBM's primary local-area network (LAN) technology." I sure hope not

the whole concept of one token being tossed around seems dumb, to mee
it is not

mailkeye works for IBM and knows these things

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/tokenrng.htm

how'd you know ?

but they probably want their customers to by ethernet from them instead of network from ibm.

token is dead
you pay a premium to be on token
in otherwords "switch for your own good"

that's putting it mildly

does anyone know anything about the Linux Professional Institute?
I can't find any information about exams on their website o_O

LPI tests are good first tests
worth getting

I'd take the RH exams but I haven't the funding

exactly

yes, I need to have certification to apply for a job next year; LPI sounds good.
But... I can get info /on/ the exams, just not how much they cost or how I take them.

ferrum, some of dude of last night said thanks

Would your employer perhaps be willing to pay at least most of the burden of an RHCT/RHCE exam series?

that means they're probably on the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" pricing plan?
uthat means they're probably on the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" pricing plan?/u

XFCE got fixed by removing the i386 packages
Damn yum

codergeek42, it's a university position, so unlikely
AndyCap, I hope not ;/

Dang.

Earlier this year, the LPI announced a price hike that established a global "benchmark'' exam price of 150 US dollars

Hey, how to I add the --exclude in yum permanantly?
