Hm, did anyone go see FF tonight?

http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/flash/

gstreamer-0.10.11-1.fc6 conflicts with file from package gstreamer-0.10.11-1.fc6 -- anyone else get this on x86_64 ?

what arch are both of those?

I thought x86_64 and i386, respectively. However, rpm -e gstreamer-0.10.11-1.fc6.i386 doesn't help; the error recurs on the next yum update
(it seems yum reinstalls the i386 version and reintroduces the conflict every time I run it)

if so it seems rpm's multi arch isn't working

it did right up until this recent update. It almost seems like there's a file duplicated between the two packages
I have no need for i386 packages, but I haven't figured out how to make Fedora stick to x86_64 only yet

i closed bar on the xchat

Please keep conversation in this channel.

and now i cant open it
is there some shortcut
4 that problem
i closed status bar

yes, there hasn't been much method to the multilib craziness, you can remove *.i386 but sometimes they get pulled back in as deps

hello everyone, how can I find the configuration files of Network Manager?

did you close a tab, one of those buttons?

jes
i cant see any options in my xcha
just windows

Yeah, I tried that and they stay away until the next yum update

i conn here manually with server host comand

you can /join a channel if you wish

I don't have a good enough understanding of how rpm (and by extension yum) decides what architectures to install

i know
but i closed toll bar and now i cant open it

it seems that noone is interetested in my NetworkManager tocpi

cant make any options on my xchat

what do you need to change about NM ?

I just want to knw the configuration file which NM store information about my OpenVPN setting
I can connect to my OpenVPN Server from the command line, but not from the NM

what bar? in this screenshot the buttons "FreeNode" and "#fedora" ? http://www.xchat.org/files/screenshots/xchat_screen_3.png

no that
bar up there with view options edit and that options
you know

I'm guessing gconf

in the top of the wind
on the top

the menus? IRC, Settings, etc?

i close it in view options
jest menus

right shift in text area ? or ctrl + F9
*right click

x86_64 amd64 athlon noarch i686 i586 i486 i386 fat -- I guess I'd need to pull "athlon" and the ix86 entries out of this

i cant open settings comand cos i dont see options
i dont see menu ...

however, rpm --showrc seems to take its settings from files in /etc/rpm and /usr/lib/rpm -- and I can't find the source of that --showrc output in either

jes jes jes
its works
10x ones again

right now what i386 packages do you have installed

i need help, when i switch to a virtual console ctrl + alt + F3, the monitor lost signal but return with ctrl + alt F7
how can i fix this problem ?

Since I haven't done a manual removal since the last time I successfully ran yum, I have i386 duplicates of most of my x86_64 packages

you can easily remove all i386 packages with one yum command
yum remove "*.i386"

How do I keep them from coming back?

you remove them ALL

exclude them in the yum config

is his exactarch enabled in his yum?

I'm running that command now. I wasn't aware yum allowed wildcards in that manner, so thanks for that tip
yum config is default. However, I'll take a closer look at yum.conf
(i'd been looking at the rpmrc and its compat field. But I can't figure out how to change it.)

no love for i386

exactarch is what again? I should know this, dealing with x86_64

i dont think you need to do anything concernign your yum config.... once you have all the 32bit packages removed

Not when i386 packages go and conflict with my x86_64 ones
"yum update" tries to put them back generally

im not convinced that you had them all removed

I do have exactarch=1 set in yum.conf

once you have a 32bit package installed... yum will attempt to depsolve for it...

That may be. I am trying to figure out the mechanism by which yum decides which architectures to download
if that's the only mechanism, I should be good now

you are thinking way way too hard

obviously, I want "noarch" as well as x86_64 packages

just remove all the 32bit packages
remove i386 AND i686
and see if yum update behaves
and when you install stuff.. make sure you are aware of the arch

trying it now
Right. If I could make the system consider ix86 to be "not compatible", rpm would warn me if I ever installed a 32-bit package by accident. But I haven't figured out where that's set.

doing that way.. is madness
you are going to screw up how your rpm works

Hrmf. I did yum remove *.i386; yum remove *.i686 -- but yum update is once again processing hundreds of dependencies, which means it's trying to install something 32-bit again

in a way that noone is going to be able to help...since noone in the right mind screws with that level of rpm logic...ever
so stop

You make it sound like black magic. :P

regenerate the rpm package log

yeah, I'm not allowing this yum session to complete
rpm --rebuilddb ?

go over the rpm package log looking for something that is 32bit
no.. its a cronjob
/var/log/rpmpkgs gets produced by the rpm cronjob in cron.daily

[root@kenworth rpm]# more /var/log/rpmpkgs|grep -v x86_64|grep -v noarch
gpg-pubkey-1ac70ce6-41bebeef.(none).rpm
gpg-pubkey-4f2a6fd2-3f9d9d3b.(none).rpm

just gpg keys

(and yes, I regenerated it with sh /etc/cron.daily/rpm)

so... what additional repos do you have active?

Just livna

i'm trying to get the FileZilla GUI to run, does anyone know how i can do that...

Actually, I take that back. I didn't even put livna on this machine
just stock fc6 repos

fascinating

(core, extras, updates)

yum list updates does that spit out 32bit packages ?

every time i installl kmod nvidia i get a blank screen after reboot and cant do anything. videocard gforce go 6150

Hrm, I think I found that

Shankysv87, why on earth are you using FileZilla? How are you using it? I thought it was win32-only

it seems to want to replace gaim.x86_64 with pidgin.i386

ah there we go

is there some other dc clients 4 fc7 xsept valknut

stupid pidgin

umm.. it comes with xampp for linux

remove gaim for now

lost1285, I'm having trouble parsing your sentence.

assuming you arent using gaim

I'm removing it permanently
I'm not on this machine

acsept

the obsolete is probably written incorrectly

is there some other dc clients 4 fc7 acsept valknut

i'm just not sure how to get it running to finish my ftp user setup

I'm not sure what "dc" and "valknut" are

(I'm not even using X11. I just went with the default install because my past attempts to cut down on unnecessary packages has left me stuck with dependencies that weren't properly listed in the rpms, which causes fun, weird breakage)

is there some other dc clients for fedora 7 acsept valknut

dc is a comicbook company... yeeesh

That was it. Now yum is only offering me x86_64 packages.

stop

probably need to look and see if that needs to be filed

i lag bot

http://google.com/

ok

Looks to me like a packaging bug with the gaim-pidgin upgrade. It shouldn't insist on installing a pidgin package for an arch that doesn't have a preexisting gaim package
However, most people do leave the i386 packages installed, I suppose because some binary-only packages from commercial vendors etc are only available in 32-bit versions

specifically firefox plugins

flash player etc, yeah

there's a compatibility plugin that's stuck in package review which solves this problem

I've been told in the past to leave the i386 packages alone because they're not hurting anything. Except my sanity.
Not much of a problem for me. This is basically a LAMP box :P

having the 32bit binaries, means more Bandwidth consumption on more updates.....pointlessly

HAHAHAHA
I just found the Free Software Song

Not too worried about that either. I work for an ISP.

http://www.gnu.org/music/free-software-song.ogg

ironically, I'm trying to get our bandwidth numbers UP so that we qualify for more peering

CuriosCat, host porn

run a fedora mirror

|DrJef| I win

Not so sure about F7 on vmware. Live and the dvd version require a reset.

We have customers who host porn
the biggest is only pushing about 250 mbit/sec

porn or Pr0n?

ferrum, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4Wy7gRGgeA

a fedora mirror wouldn't be bad.
The best way to waste bandwidth, though, is an IRC server
particularly linked to a kiddie-infested network :
(e.g. any of the majors other than freenode, which has been relatively spared)

How many channels CuriousCat?

capgadget, numbers are for mortals

IRC servers or channels aren't what eats bandwidth. Packet kiddies ddosing your server are what eats bandwidth.

CuriosCat... you want people to ddos your network?

Anything past 20 require extra digits I don't have ferrum

No Packages marked for Update/Obsoletion - beautiful
No. I was merely stating that hosting an IRC server host on a major network, due to the DDoS exposure, is a bigger bandwidth sink than either porn or a fedora mirror
and I've thought about a fedora mirror, but I don't have any machines with terabytes of free space :P

Hummm Base-20 requires you put another rock on the ground and touch the left index finger again right if you are a lefty

CuriosCat, you could always just mirror the .isos

or the latest release
or the ones I use

I'll think about it.

would make my internal yum updates even faster

anyone has a nvidia 6150 go card working properly?

fc6 was only about 2.5-3GB Curious cat. Why do you think you need TB?

2.5-3GB per arch per release

fedorared, not in there

whit what command i can kill some pid

lost1285, kill process_id

kill -9 pid number

so, 7 fedora releases to date, 3 archs, average 3GB eachs -- already up to 100+GB, and that's not accounting for DVD and CD isos
but yeah, if I just stick to the latest release or two, I could probably do it.

kill -9 1111 ??????/
like that

kill -9 1111

ok ok
10x

what

my intention was to use pid_nuimer
10x ? how sincere can a thanks be if he dosnt even bother to fully write it?

that means thanks?
I thought it was a multiplier

10 = ten =than (?) and ex

Apparently, illiteracy is "in" these days.

I was guestimating on the updates to fc5 CuriosCat.

i dont know why they bother to make full keyboards

A full keyboard to me would be about 3 feet long that I could write software and play some Chopin stuff at the same time.

As of the Fedora 7 release, the total space consumed on the master server, thus what a mirror could consume, is 663GB and growing. A 1TB volume would be most appropriate for a long-term mirror.

A numeric keypad is optional.

That's where I get the TB number, capgadget
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/Mirroring

300 GB of that is perl modules and text editors

Well I went from 60 GB to 720 GB in 1/2007 I'm in disk heaven. Filling it up fast hough.

I think I have an old 600GB NAS somewhere.

Missplaced a 40 GB WD drive in the HW upgrade. No Idea where I put it.

i've got a growing collection of perfectly good 40 gig drives...that i want to find a use for

My server (that I was just having this architecture problem on that drjef helped me fix) has 2 x 200GB SATA drives in a RAID 1. It's gonna need an upgrade within the next six months
40GB WD? Trash can would be a good place

My old parts bin is a bit full

RAID of course

no trash, give it to me!!!!

It worked just fine. Think it was ATA-100 Good enough for secondary backups.

|DrJef|, bad idea @ ~10+Watts per drive

i barely have 80GB total

38.5-ish GB rather.

Trying to build a decent-size RAID of 40GB drives would require a big case. And a beefy power supply

if i used them at home :-
if i used them at work however......

It was a warranty replacement for a Maxtor that only lived 6 months.

can i install some software for fc6 on my fc7 i never get that is there any diffrents

38.6?

|DrJef|, free NRG!!

how does one set up a raid in f7? I'm not familiar with the process.

i dont folow you

I'd like to upgrade the drive in my mac mini. That's also 40GB, but 2.5"

if there is some website it would be appreciated

what you want to isntall ?

a 100GB 7200rpm 2.5" would be nice, but I'm worried about heat in the mini

i want 2 instal some dc client on my fc7
but i want dc++

fedora solved ? dont know if its there, but they have a lot of things

ferrum, very easily.

zcat, thank you.

and whats is holding you ?

no raid on fedorasolved :[

can i install dc++ for fc6

ferrum, not really a fedora-specific thing

zcat, I know. I'm not familiar with it at all.

is it compatibile

you mean a fedora core 6 rpm you found somewhere ? in a fedora7 ?

no
waaa

i really need to get something like the kill-o-watt power meter so i can track exactly how much power is being sucked by the old fileserver i cobbled together... and see how bad of a power suck it is

see
i want some dc client on my fc7

zcat, there is a piece of software that causes the drives to be in a raid, right?

but i dont want valknut
i use dc++ long time so i know dc++ 2 configure with my closed eyes
i try 2 conf valknut

/etc/mdadm.conf ; mkfs /etc/md0 ; mount /dev/md0 /mnt/foo

and make some shares

I'm trying to use auto.smb in FC6 and receiving an error that mount_cifs.so is not found when trying to access a share. I have samba-client and samba-common installed. Is there another package necessary?

and what is holding you ? yum search dc++

and i do that but something's not right

yum provides mount_cifs.so

|DrJef|, so do I. I've given it as a gift a couple times, but haven't bought one for myself

zcat, what is type fd?
I'm trying to fill in blanks with manpages/google, so sorry for questions.

raid autodetect

it's an fs type?

part type
like ext3, lvm, raid, etc

i cant help you if you dont tell me EXACTLY what you have done, where, and what problems do you have, and when they happen

ok

I have tried that. No Matches found.

weird

i trying to write so you can understand me
should i instal this compat-libstdc++-296.i386 ?

thats a compatibilitie librari for standrd c++, not dc++, but matches cause of the similiar characters in the name

ok
yum find valknut and all that compat-lib... files

do you speak insglish naturaly ? or is it your second language ? because it migh be easier for you to joing #fedora-cc where cc is country code

i dont think there is chan with my cc
let me see

wich is ?

cc is something like es (espanish) ar (argentina) ve (venezuela) ect

espanish?

am i boring 2 you gays

morning

zcat, what does mkfs do in that example? (mkfs /dev/md0)

you are not boring us, but there seems to be a comunication problem, i cant understand you

i trying to work on my lin all night

ferrum, format. mkfs.ext3 rather.

ah ok, makes sense with the .ext3

makes file system

broli are you a juis

mkfs.ext3 is the same as mkfs -f ext3 or something like it

yeah, I was just curious as to what mkfs was doing without arguments.
"literal interpretation" :x

thats why i use a virtual machine, is so fun to type rm -rf / XD

i usually mkfs.ext3 -m0 /dev/foo, then tune2fs -c0 -i0 -o user_xattr,acl /dev/foo

lol... es (españa)

well, i always chat there, and is full of latinamericans, so we have taken the chanel :P is spanish now D
is posible to configure the rate of the mouse wheel ? this MS mouse is horrible

how do i know if i need kmod nvidia or kmod-nvidia-96xx for geforve go 6150?

the 96xx is for geforce2 and previus, afaik
if i where you, i would first try with the normal one, and if it fails, try the other one

you need to read the readme from nvidia

ok

they dropped support for some older cards in the latest driver

ferrum, filezilla is for linux too

well, yes, the correct apruch is to read and think, my aprouch is force based :P

i'm just not sure how to set up accounts in it

and for really really old cards.. there is nvidia-legacy

but legacy is your last option, has no accel

are you suggesting that i should get rid of the tnt2 card sitting in my k6-2 machine?

im saying that if you can, is better to use the 96x driver

Anyone know where I can find a good start-up guide for getting MP3 & Commercial DVD playback enabled in FC6?

fedora solved. search for livna

www.fedorasolved.org www.fedorafaq.org

Aye, I'm there now.
Amazed at how everything auto-detected with no putzing around doing manual configurations though

i dont know if i should stay on fc6, or try to upgrade to f7 the doubt is killing me
the last time, i was using fc4, and there where the fist testing releases of f7 :P

Can anyone help me trying to get an SELinux AVC Denial not to deny something specific?

sure

Thanks DrNick. I want /sbin/syslogd to be able to read/write to home directories

that's a strange request

Its because I have rssh setup to have a home directory that is chroot jailed
and it need to log in it

oh, well, if it's a chroot, I don't think you'll need any local policy customizations

I get an AVC Denial every time syslogd starts

try "chcon -t var_t /var" and "chcon -t var_log_t /var/log"

Can I message you?

why?

DrNick, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

I didn't want to annoy others here
I can ask here

if they're annoyed, they can leave
assuming you're not going to paste 500 lines or something

I did "chcon -t var_t /home/chrootjail/var" and "chcon -t var_log_t /home/chrootjail/var/log"
and I still get the denial
actually make that "chcon -t var_t /home/chrootjail/dev" and "chcon -t var_log_t /home/chrootjail/dev/log"
That's where rssh says to put the log...

what's the AVC denial?

SELinux is preventing /sbin/syslogd (syslogd_t) "search" to home (home_root_t)

ok, that opens a whole can of worms

By the way, do I need to "undo" those commands that didn't work?

no, they don't hurt, they just change policy coverage
does the chroot jail have to be in /home?

Probably not
If I take it out of home thou I don't remember all of the things I would have to change to make it work

hey
is there any way to clean up old compiled stuff in fedora?
am running out of space with 10GB I haven't done anything.

and apol segfaults..

also I get "usb 2-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71"

anyone here do passwordless ssh login?

when I start to boot

at this point, you're well into policy customization territory. I'd suggest either disabling SELinux, or taking the time to learn how it all works and craft up a customized policy that fits your needs

i do

"old compiled stuff"

broli, how do you move your keys around? or do you only connect from a very small number of machines?

?

small number

kraft

I'm going to pick option B and just take it out out of /home and figure out what to do from there

broli, ok... cool

like stuff like downloaded files for the net install

i generate the key, and use scp

or stuff it uses to compile from the source

yum downloads binaries

broli, ok... i am wondering how i'd handle ssh logins via putty from possibly random machines

one sec gotta wait until the system boots

standard kernel?

can you help me about this plugin and i wil go

if he got a failure to load module error

pls

how do I get back into gnome
I did control alt f1
how do I like get back in :P

im like to wal trough as i think. the first thing that came to my mind was the 96xx driver

ctrl alt f7 i think

ah kk

rpm -qa "kmod-nvidia*"

okay, one problem I'm having is that I have to swap hard drives to get back on Gaim. brb

ok, can somone help me set up vsftpd

Shankysv87, more than yum install vsftpd /
?

brb.. (i'm tired..) i need something to wake me up a little bit

he wants to set it up as a gopher server

hmm, sounds out of my league, let me consult google

one more thing, I also can't run the nvidia.run driver with sh nvidia.... how I installed it in suse

holy crap

in fedora we do "yum install kmod-nvidia"

are you attempting to use the nvidia installer directly from nvidia instead of using an rpm?

SpinachHead, didn't know suse was that backward

but I also tried the driver directly from the website Fedora can't use sh?
but I also tried the driver directly from the website Fedora can't use sh?
no, no I have the livna rpm

http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/

but tried the other way also

nvidia instaler is a bad bad idea

yeah, I've done all that, just wondering why I can't run processes with sh

and is not a distro thing, to use sh,
check permisions, and make sure you are using the right name

okay, going to check the rpm now.

ok back
i'm not sure how to set up a user for vsftpd

Shankysv87, by default it uses local users

well.. how do i log in from outside my router?

Shankysv87, first, verify that you can log in from within your router
then, you need to setup your router accordinly

i have port forwarding on

well you'll need to forward port 21 and 20 tcp to the machines with vsftpd

hello, mateys!

ok, one second, i have 21 set but not 30

who's the top python programmer here?

20*

Renich, i'm far from top, but i guess that depends on if i'm the only one here

lol

hehehe... Ok, what IDE do you use? (interested in interface design)

Renich, just a text editor
so kwrite, quanta, kdevelop ... whatever suits me at the time

cool

for GUI i use the GTK Glade interface designer
and pygtk

well, any IDE for cool GTK interfaces you would recommend?
ok... I found it rather... ummm... unpractical

Renich, what it... oh
well i'm not sure there's anything better than glade

glade v3

what's wrong with it (in your opinion)

glade2 (the one in the repos) is crap

wow... I had a hard time positioning buttons... that's what I mean

Renich, you have to get used to boxing

Renich, ah
there's a learning curve

you recommend compiling?

Renich, or you could just cop out and lay down an absolute positioning widget

it's not drag and drop purely

Renich, compiling what?
oh, v3?
yeah.

yeah! that's what I want!

Renich, you have to get used to the box model

glade2... like, installing

pembo13_com, he doesn't HAVE to
he should

ooohhh you meant v3?

whichever.

well, i suppose

you mean like... positioning a box so I can put my button where I want it to?

ferrum, never found out how to do the absolute stuff

pembo13_com, there's a widget called "Fixed Positions"

Renich, yes, gtk does it differently (in a good way)
ferrum, interesting
will have to remember tht

yeah, gimme the info... so I can absolutely position everything

GTK+ Project

in the Palette window, you'll see a tool that looks like three randomly-positioned buttons

ooooh k

hover your cursor over it and it will say "Fixed Positions"

ferrum, not sure if you should be passing on this advice to someone new to glade, but ok

ok.. port 20 is good to go now

pembo13_com, he can only hurt himself :/

oook

Shankysv, now it's a matter of trying it out

hey

ferrum, could be crippling a futre sys-config dev

Renich, this isn't visual basic. Fixed positioning _sucks_. You should not use it.

it should be ftp://myipaddress/ right?

lost1285, yow

hi

Shankysvyes

Renich, copy that?

ok

Shankysv, yes

and why's that?

kmod-nvidia-100.14.09-1.2.6.21_1.3228.fc7

sorry, was checking it out

Renich, you can't resize the window if you use absolute positioning.
it doesn't scale. At all.

SpinachHead, sounds right

oooh, will I not use positioning then... what about GNOME?

you just want GTK+

Renich, what about it?

hmm, x still says cant find nvidia module

just learn hboxes and vboxes. It's really easy.

yes sir!

SpinachHead, how exactly did you install the kmod?
ferrum, and tables

was asking about it... you know, gnome apps and stuff

and tables

su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia'

Renich, sorry, still not clear on question

use of tables?

Renich, gnome apps are built using GTK+

SpinachHead, okay, then what happend?

Renich, there's a "table" widget, just mess around with it and you'll figure it out

I was just asking your opinions on GNOME, that's all

Renich, ohh
Renich, i don't touch the stuff myself

man, thanks for the great start!

all downloaded, included some config-display stuff, then it said y/n ? blah blah, then installed

Renich, treat it like marijuanna, don't have any problem with it, i just don't use it myself

was interested in python... but seems that glade allows c and c++

Renich! No! NO NO NO!

Renich, sure does
Renich, i've only ever used it with python though

Renich, don't _ever_ compile glade.
Renich, that feature doesn't even exist anymore in version 3.

ferrum, why not?

well, then I'll use it 4-5 times a year then... hahaha

Renich, haha, fair enough

pembo13_com, because it sucks. Better web design is to separate the ui from the code and merge them via #include gtk/glade.h
not to mention that the code produced is of dubious quality

ferrum, okay.. will have to take your word for that, haven't tried it myself

i have trouble with install flash pl

pembo13_com, i'm not having any luck so far.. when i use my login info should it be my username@localhost with the password i use to log in to my os account, or should it just be the same exact that i use to log in..?

trust me, it's much more elegant.

errors had a mesage about xorg-x11-server 1.3.0.0-5.fc7 also

dont know what i must do

lost1285, what did you try?
Shankysv, the exact thing

i try to instal it

Shankysv, what ftp client are you using?

and i stop it at half way
see
Please enter the installation path of the Mozilla, SeaMonkey,

i'm using a browser

i'm using firefox

Mozilla Firefox 2

lost1285, how did you attempt this install?

i extract targz

Shankysv, install the fireftp addon for firefox2, that will give you some more useful output to figure out what is wrong

and make instal

lost1285, see
lost1285, that's where you went wrong

now i dont know what path i nead to write

lost1285, why didn't you just dload and install the rpm?
lost1285, why make life so difficult?

i try it with mpr
but some errors ocure
i will try again so you can help me

Did you install the driver from nVidia previously?

failed to load NVIDIA kernel module

try legacy

no, nothing previously

That's because it's still downloading it...

lost1285, did you install this system yourself?

i'm getting timeouts

you mean os ?

Shankysv, then connection is not being completed
lost1285, yes sorry, the OS

no friend help me

rpm -q --qf "%{name}-%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}\n" kernel kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia

but i wil learn

i can connect with localhost instead of ip

did you instal lin first time alone ?

lost1285, yes
lost1285, how old are you?

youre wunderkind then
i'm 20

lost1285, do you need fedora up and running quickly?

what do you mean ?
i use a shells

lost1285, well, i would suggest (unwillingly) that you reinstall the OS

so i lear some comands
but now i got whole os

lost1285, something is terribly wrong if both RPM and Yum do not work

i will not rm -fr

lost1285, after you install, before you do anything else (with the OS) come in here and get advice

brb, gotta swap drives again

lost1285, that will help you learn

i instal this fedora alone
friend just help me about ntfs partitions
and make lin partition and boot

lost1285, well that's cool... but something is wrong with it... and i can't say exactly what
lost1285, using rpm should not hang

so what you suggesting

if possible, reinstall

i dont wnat tu reinstal my os
i cant

lost1285, you can't reinstall fedora?

i download it 4 days

why does yum download a huge primary.sqlite.bz2 EVERY time i use it?

i cant
but i dont wanna

Arfdee, well i mean the file changes, very often, and at random intervals

it's just hard when you have a bandwidth cap
and just want to yum install a package or two

lost1285, well your next option is to to come back into this chatroom when there are more people around, and get help on fixing rpm and yum
Arfdee, you can try using yum -C

you also want yum to resolve all the dependencies of your 1 or 2 packages... that's whay it needs the files

Arfdee, that would rely on your cache, and not dload as much

hm
ok

Arfdee, i'm sure your smart enough to see the cons in that

thanks 4 help pembo13_com

lost1285, i'm sorry that i couldn't help you further

np
bb

ivazquez, i found the problem, but don't know what to do. When booting it says the Nvida module is disabled because the nividia-Xen module was not found

I sometimes hear Jim Morrison while using fedora... this all new "flying high" theme has gotten into me...

you're running a xen kernel ?

kmod-nvidia works only with the standard kernel, my friend... that is AFAIK

when installing from internet i checked xen as one of the packages. Along with the httpd etc

SpinachHead, tell the output of uname -r
and is the running kernel the same as the one which is giving nvidia problems ?

peace to al
l

i thought xen was just a virtual machine that i could run inside fedora, like vmware

yust: yum install system-config-boot and then go to SystemAdminBootlader and select the standard kernel as your default

it's more than that.

okay, brb

Oh, mighty Xen Gods, please forgive this humble mortals!
... and I thought Xen was something like yin-yang or reiki or something
maybe feng shui
those Japanese guys should use more descriptive names...
and what's comming next... an announcement of RedHat making a deal with M$???

Can anyone tell me the command I would use to change the group permissions on all folders and files in /some/path to usergroup02 and make everything read only?

two differnet command for that chgrp and chmod

ok, but they are recursive?

both take the -R (recursive) flag

ah

BUT
are you using selinux
?

yes

good point

OK, then there is a preferred way
unfortunately, I haven't memorized that one yet, so you have to look at it yourself
it's similar though

Where?

hello, i'am trying to build an rpm, but when i rpmbuild -bc package.spec i get an error "/root/rpmbuild/SOURCES is smaller than 4 bytes" i dont get thos coz my sources are the directory???

http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=011057779923588025604%3Aakrqpglozlu
shouldn't you rebuild the .source.rpm file?

their isnt one available i got this package from sourceforge
isnt it possible to build an rpm from source?

Isn't selinux permissioning supported by Nautilus ?

a .spec can't be rebuild... you need the rest of the stuff... the source and things... the .spec file is only a... recipe
you missing the ingredients

You shouldn't be building packages as root. Install rpmdevtools.

yeah i know i got the sources from "sourceforge" .tbz file i extracted that to /rpmbuild/SOURCES

That's not what you do.

AeonIntention - Look at 'chcon'

thx

i installed those already

Then run fedora-buildrpmtree.

did that

Then why is it talking about /root/rpmbuild?

So use chgrp and chmod and then use chcon to put the tag back to what it was?

well finally got Gyach-E working

Uh, hehe. Guess I was running the Xen kernel. Now I'm in Fedora and the Nvidia driver is working. Thanks for the help.

You run it as a non-root user.
You know, your normal account.

i dont know its complaining that the directory is less than 4 btyes

Well, you botched it when you extracted the tarball anyways.
But you botched it even earlier when you ran fedora-buildrpmtree as root :P

Sorry, I really don't know it well enough to comment. I am pretty sure I read that chgrp and chmod work within the confines of selinux, BUT the preferred methood is to use chcon - so, really you (and I !) should learn it

how do i unbotch it?

First, log out of root.
You should be doing all this as a normal user.

)

Amarok fails, could anyone recommend another Music App w/ Library?

exaile

Rhythmbox, Banshee.

How does amarok fail - I use it I think it's one of the best media library systems I have used

can you tell me how to unscrew this?

It stopped playing my music all of a sudden
claims there's no demuxer, even though, it worked other boots.

Have you logged out of root yet?

yeah

Okay, run fedora-buildrpmtree.

yeah
is that it then
thanks ivazquez

Now put the tarball in ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES and the spec file in ~/rpmbuild/SPECS.
Don't extract it there, just put the tarball itself there.

thancks
nah didnt work still same error

At this point the error log and the contents of the spec file would be handy to see.

specfile http://rafb.net/p/lfILDL78.html
i dont have an error log

Who wrote that spec file?
Was it you? Fess up...

I read the man page on chcon (not much to that one) and it doesn't explain how to write CONTEXT. I tried "User data" but it says that is an invalid context

i'm following a guide, yeah i wrote it

The Source line needs to have the tarball filename at the end of it somewhere.
Which guide, out of curiosity?

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Drafts/BuildingPackagesGuide

hi all

Huh. That guide completely misses that part. I'm going to have to correct that.

i see where you are going with this, i think

any ideas as to why my friends mouse will stop working randomly, its a mx1000

Anyways, let me see if I can find a valid Source URL for you...

i'll go over to frshmeat and the sources

Also, the License field is wrong. It should be a descriptor, not a URL.

i have same mouse, but it seems to be something to do with the usb and irqs

http://www.xs4all.nl/%7Esalsaman/lives/current/%{name}-%{version}.tar.bz2
And the License should be GPLv2.
And your BRs are a bit off too.

cool, the newest version of gnash apparently works with youtube, among other things
haven't tried it yet, myself

ivazquez:the tag source0: is where i put the above url?

Yes.

doesnt work

Do you have an error message perhaps?

File /home/enfield/rpmbuild/SOURCES/lives-0.9.8.5.tar.bz2: No such file or directory

What's the file called?

lives

The tarball?

lives-0.9.8.5.tar.bz2

No, it isn't.

Would anyone be able to help me get Dual Monitors (nVidia) setup?

hello all

hello

Error 842c0000 receiving sftp packet
error 842c0000 initializing sftp protocol
Can anyone help me with this?

Would anyone be able to help me get Dual Monitors (nVidia) setup?

Which sftp client?

IPSwitch WS_FTP Pro 2007

Give WinSCP a try.

ok
But I have disabled SCP with rssh
I only allow SFTP
Would it still work?

scp is a standard. sftp is not.
If anything you should disable sftp.

thanks its bulding now

Anyone here running Dual Monitors and has an nVidia card?

Not I.

hello [splinux]

ho my good...
this guy is everywhere

is there someone who wants to learn python with me?

How quickly do you need to learn it?

dont know
as i can

Do you know any other programming languages?

i can learn alot im not workin
no

Start with "How To Design Programs".

where?

Google knows.

google?
yes

it would be nice a little how to compile something, as an example... I just get petrified every time someone say me "compile...", had tried a couple of times... well, it did not worked to good.

ty ivazquez

Say what?

just a cent, many of us do not know how to compile, I do not mean you "have to"... is just that I really have tried... useless

there is nothing to it

(us= newbies)

the compiler does all the work

well...

if you have downloaded a proper source tree, you simply do "./configure && ./make"
configure will sort out variances in your development environment (if it can)
make will control the application build (compile and link)
the only time you should run into trouble is if you have an unsatisified dependency

ok, will try again, some day

How do I scan for wireless networks? Does Fedora have a tool for this already installed?

KDE has a nice tool for that
KWifi (I think)
I use it on my Lappy, but it's not with me at the moment

yum search kismet

could u help me with this probelm? http://rafb.net/p/lvLDDf26.html

nothing preinstalled crash69? That PC is not on the network at the moment

not that I know

ok, I will go plug in

That's a bug in the Makefile. Time to make a patch.

oh!

how can I tell a what group a package belongs to?

how can i make a service script execute at start up , it looks like only some of them get executed , not al

ah, groupinfo

chkconfig

thx
what if it says service does not support chkconfig
i did my script wrong eh ... but what would i miss not to support chckconfig

Wait... I know this one...

kosz, if your script is in /etc/init.d, do a chkconfig -add servicename

yes i did that
but it doesn't work for my script
i just have something that initialises some daemons from the command line ... static comands, no variables , no good at scripts
and only start / stop / reload functions

Read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysvinitfiles.

number number number

thanks guys looking into it now

look at the other scripts for samples

you need to isntall the script

ah
there are some things that are commented with #
i took those out of my script

/etc/init.d/scriptname

sorry i didn't understand that

never mind that, install is just a fancy cp + chmod

ok ... i guess i needed all those properties that were commented
looks to be added now thanks ppl

you may also be interest in kismet-extras, aircrack-ng, airsnort...

finally got revisor to build me a customized distro, now to test it -- I wish I hadn't upgraded my kernel this am, damn VMWare module needs rebuilding now !

the source compiles and installs?

Say what?

i can compile the source, i'm trying to build an rpm remember

Okay, so then what's the issue?

if i can compile the source then it doesnt have a bug?

If -bc succeeds then you may be done with it.
You should still go through config.log and see if you missed any BRs.

the issue was http://rafb.net/p/lvLDDf26.html

And? Did you make a patch for the Makefile?

no

Why not?

i dont know how and i cant find information

The guide shows how.

Is it possible to hide directories from a certain group of users? (Yet still let them have read access)

man chmod / chown

k ty
I've looked at those man pages and I don't see any info on invisibility.

so you want something to appear as "not there" yet people should be able to guess magically that it is and be able to read it?
i guess i don't understand your esoteric needs

there is no invisibility. but you can put the dir in a dir where the users only have execute and not read permission

The folders need to be there but I don't want them listed on my sftp server because they will confuse the windows users
The user needs read permission

perhaps education is your best advice
educate your users ..

I suppose
Can't I tell ssh not to display certain files/folders to users?

if they can't understand that.. deny them access until they can.

you didn't understand dir1 (no read only execute) in dir1 make dir2 with read, execute and whatever
nope.
that is left to the client
Fugu and Filezilla don't show hidden files (.files ) by default

The user can read /etc/passwd, is that a security risk?

no
well, it can be, it lets the a user know the other users names

AndyCap this one is chrooted so only his name is in it

SELinux can do that, but it requires... you know... learning.

sounds like a _lot_ of work as well

eeeewwww learning

hi
can i access ntfs partitions during fc7 installation
i have dvd iso image on ntfs partition

no, the kernel doesn't understand ntfs

i don't think that's possible

i think you'll have problems unless you are highly creative
burn it.

how do I install fedora from an usb stick?

hi all

I'm aware of how silly the question sounds, but what would be an obvious reason for a 1.2Ghz P3 laptop, that was previously very fast, to have slowed to 486 speed under X

heh
I should have googled it first; found the answer already

anyone know how I can set my box to run a task just before it suspends?
actually what I want it to do is just disconnect from the net..

: during network installation till what directory do i need to specify in the path, till os or images

as it causes havoc with my modem if I was connected when the system suspends..

you need to specify a directory that has repodata/ folder inside of it. now you have to see which directory has it :P

ok

Ahoy gentlemen

yes

I was wondering if ya'll would know if I should install FC7 before WinXP or after - I'm aiming to dual boot.
And also
Does FC7 come with a way to format an NTFS disk

dumber OS first

I'll take that to mean XP first

at least before it was like if you install linux first, grub and all, then xp writes on top of your bootloader
so you're unable to boot to linux, then you have to boot with rescue disc and rerun grub-install and whatnot to rectify

Yet another reason to not put grub in the MBR.

or you can use boot loader

is this a problem?

xp first, then fedora installer understands that you have win in there and you can go around that in a much more elegant fashion, put win in your bootloader menu etc.

which is adition to partition magic

168995 ndiswrapper, i915@pc

Thank you both.

powersoft boot loader

but it requires 16mb fat32 partition
but the good thing is that you don`t need to do smth on mbr
;o
it keeps old mbr
;]

One more question - which is probably of the RTFM kind - can I mount an NTFS HD into linux and read the files already there without formatting it?

there seems to be many ways to do dualboot? which is the best?
i have always just installed win first, then linux, and used grub

the one YOU use
:-)

I've found that grub works fine.
Install it on /boot and make /boot the active partition.

yes

Right on gentlemen, thank you kindly.

what does 'active partition' mean?

If this works out fine, I'll see you here from FC7 in a few hours~

the one that bios checks first for OS?

It's a flag in the MS-DOS partition structure. The "legacy" MBR uses it to decide what partition's boot sector to run.

ivazquez, you there?

Nope.

can you tell me if this is a problem?
168995 ndiswrapper, i915@pc

What part of it seems like a problem?

well, often when i am using internet or network connections, things like gnome-terminal open very slow, etc
someone suggested it may be an irq issue

I don't know how to tell ndiswrapper and the i915 module to use separate IRQs.

i dont know that i have to, i am just trying to figure out the source of the problem i have had on this laptop for several versions of fedora
i dont know that i have to, i am just trying to figure out the source of the problem i have had on this laptop for several versions of fedora

is there any way to open *.zix file?

hi all, can anyone give me some advise on getting a projector to work with my laptop and f7?

Is it not possible to follow links when using sftp?

I wonder what distribution people would switch to if redhat striuck a deal with m$ ?

Ubuntu

heh I had a feeling that would be the likely choice.. although I have kept my distance from debian releases, but thats been a matter of $ really and not one of dislike

Who said anything about having to switch?

so you don't think there is another distribution with the strength even close?

I don't think the knee-jerk reaction of switching distros is required.

ivazquez, well for me I thought that extortion was illegal and so far from what I have read its all m$ extorting $ from the other companies

Then go complain to the Justice Department.

when i do suspend to ram, on resume, i see nothing and cannot use keyboard on laptopo

ivazquez, naw I am just trying to have an intelligent conversation of thoughts

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to jump ship just because there's some rough waters.

I've been a redhat diehard since 6.2 days minus a few years oif not working with linux....
