Take a look at examples/resources for both and see what you

why not use azureus?
I hate the popular misconception that Perl is necessarily

coolball what are you using to download it? I agree with

perl seems to have a more "traditional" coding style
azureus
azureus is a bloated pig

actually, utorrent azureus
Yup.
utorrent works fine with wine

Hello! I'm having some display issues. My screen is a
1280x800 monitor. whenever i restart my machine my settings revert
to something that requires me to scroll to the right to see it.
When i change the screen resolution then go back to previous
settings, it fixes itself
Haha.
any suggestions to fix this?

i'm now trying to get gstreamer to work so that i can listen to

however, i'm not having any luck like usual

Yech- I can't stand any service without shell access.
riczho, it's an old piano instructor, I think he'll be
alright without ssh.
Aha.
ferrum, 1and1.com's great for el cheapo shared
hosting (no ssh on the cheaper accts tho; ftp only).
zcat, hmm $3.99 is much better..
bluehost is cheapish with shell access
really just going for cheap web
hosting here; he doesn't have much income.
bluehost is like 7.95 a month
1and1 is $4/mo
with no shell
he won't need shell
ferrum, i read that site you told me, but i got an

what's the error?
don't want to post the huge thing in here.
where can i post it?

ealier i did something with fedora core 7?
i think
repositories.. perhaps i screwed something up?
you installed livna from the .rpm, right?
i think so
it was a while ago
rpm -q livna-release
yeah..
did you take the fedorafaq's yum.conf? that might be
outdated..
i have no idea.
you have to remember what you changed :x
i've changed so much i don't remember half of it
if i did, do you think that would be the cause of it?
did/didn't
Has anyone had any difficulties installing FC7 on a Dell
D620?
perhaps. Try to resolve something from the default mirrors.
"yum info pidgin" or something
forb1dden_, is that a laptop? what difficulties are you
having?
ferrum, yes. Installer works fine but after the initial
reboot it simply hangs when attempting to load the
kernel.
forb1dden, at the boot screen press "a" and add " maxcpus=1" to
the end
I've been able to install ubuntu on the same machine just to
confirm that the hardware is working
but for some odd reason fc7 just wont boot
ferrum i'll give it a shot
uno momento
pardon, but at the installer boot menu or as a grub option?
ep grub nevermind
hrmm
grub
is it due to issues with the centrino duo or simply all dual
core processors
oh and btw it worked and thank you
all dual core; it's a kernel issue. It'll be fixed some time
soon.
np
you should add that info to /boot/grub/grub.conf so that you
don't have to do that every time.
excellent
thanks again though
ferrum, i tried the "yum info pidgin" and it came out with
pretty much or exactly the same thing as the info i copied and
showed you before.
what do you mean by try and resolve by default mirrors?
Has anybody gotten the Cisco VPN client to compile on Fedora
7?
not I
ferrum, i found the file that i got.. it was Fedora 7
repository RPM from rpm.livna.org
I just use vpnc.
Oh, is that an open-source one?
I didn't even know about it.
perhaps a restart or a logoff/log on?
Yes. And you can use the network manager plugin with it as
well.
Hey, nice! :-)
Thanks, I'll use that instead, and see if it works. :-)
It works with our Cisco VPN aggregators.
how can i see what all the irssi files are included in
yum?
rpm -ql irssi
how can i set my monitor to be 1280x768 ? the closest monitor
is 1024x800 and it's making my screen too wide
How is it that one uses those NetworkManager plugins? I've
installed it, but I don't normally use NetworkManager.
Also, I don't actually have a PCF, I just have the connection
details.
Anyone had any luck getting lightscribe software working under
F7?
Although I could write a PCF.
thanks but i want to know what is available via yum for irssi
files
Hopefully vpnc doesn't panic my kernel randomly. That would
make it a lot better than the Cisco VPN client.
im curious why /script load in irssi doesnt work
it's completely userspace
it says there is no such command
but there should be
Okay, great.
I don't know about pcf files. I just define a new connection
through the gui.
The NetworkManager GUI?
Yes. After installing NetworkManager-vpnc you should have a new
area for defining vpn connections.
Okay, thanks!
I'll start up NM.
anyone happen to know how large the ata Host Protected Area
is? need to shrink one of my extended partitions on an old disk so
the kernel stops complaining about it.
is livna down?
6MB-ish apparently
the answer is /load perl
are you unable to add/remove applications?
yeah. linux is broken
dang it
shankysv87, it is very difficult to fix if you don't know
what was changed, and the error is very vague. You could consider
reinstalling if you haven't done lots of setup.
(and then not touching anything!)
lol
i just want a few things and all those things to work
correctly
shankysv87, did you try a 'yum clean all' yet?
nope. let me try.
i can't get add/remove applications to work.. when i go there.. it
says "Unable to retrieve software information"
lol
ok.. reinstall time
be back in a little while
bah, you're nuts
yeah, been that way since i went crazy.
the logic is flawless
you're going to reinstall fedora just because your gui software
manager thingy isn't working? open up a command line and run "yum
install kyum" or something
Mathman, that doesn't work either.
I still say a reinstall is a bit extreme
probably takes less time than diagnosing the error
install for me was about 10 mins :/
oh yeah.. reinstalling.. bbl
Hmm.. I used a netinstall from a USB stick, so reinstalling
isn't generally practical for me
freebsd doesn't have mirrors?
hum
Hi people
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/mirrors-ftp.html
oho, excellent
But yeah- it's amazing that they survive even though they
barely encourage people to use other mirrors.
Hi!
I'm looking for a way of making my usb NTFS HDD automount with
user permisions.. Any pointers?
epablo, install the NTFS drives and add an entry to fstab
drivers*
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs/
That would work only for me.. I'm looking for a way of doing
it in the HAL / gnome-volume-managent level.
I already installed ntfs-3g, but it mounts the drive with root
permisions..
hello pippl.
or uid=uid
It doesn't mount the drive with any permissions at all
because it doesn't mount the drive. You do.
I imagine this is why gnome-mount-nautilus-properties
exists.
I am unable to get the fedora 7 i386 install to not hang up
after I select the language and keyboard layout. I googled this but
I only found somebody else complaining about the same
thing.
long name :/
BTW... you've decided doing it with an entry in fstab would only
work for you because...?
it works manually. But when I plug it in.. It gets mounted
just like a flash drive.. it looks like the same script doing the
mount (looking a dmesg) but the NTFS omits the uid=
paramter
Any ideas?
gnome-mount-nautilus-properties. Where is that sitting?
As should be obvious, it's the name of a package.
Well I really don't know if I can set a variable for the user
there
Thanks.. looking for the pkg
Gods only know why you think you need to.
Don't like the idea of setting a 000 umask
Since apparently you've decided that anyone who plugs it in
should be able to write to it, wtf difference does it make?
Did someone suggest you set a system-wide umask? No? I didn't
think so.
If I plug it.. Only I want to be able to use it. The other users
shouldn't be able to use it. Shared machine.. ssh.. that sort of
stuff
Is there a known fix for the f7 install hang? If so, anyone
know where it was posted?
Which is the way it works by default.. so again, what's the
problem again?
By defualt only root can write it. I wan't to make it user
friendly (plug and pray) and that not every user logged in at the
time can modify it
mwilson, im confused
So am I. Why he insists on the drive being formatted NTFS is
beyond me.
huffing paint will do that
mwilson, 'cause ntfs is da shiznit!
I laughed, even if he didn't
Thanks, lunitik. :-)
Any recomendations for a FS for a 100GB drive that keeps it
Winblows compatible?
Uhh... then set 007 or 077 or something (latter only if you
make use of groups correctly...)
CIFS
Chances are, user and group is the same... thus 007... else
something else.
Isn't that network based (smb)
yes
you asked
No, it's sneaker net
There are DLL's for EXT3 for Windows...
Better than the NTFS support in Linux... EXT3 is documented...
vfat also, but / can't be that. plus, vfat sucks
It doesn't make it very useable.. I need to go around with ext3
dll and the disk. But yes it is well documented
Do any of you have software RAID 5 that was active when you
did your f7 install? Maybe it's hanging because of that for some
reason.
epablo, unless you're doing video editing or something, it's
fast enough (over gigabit).
Then use CIFS in workgroup mode... easiest solution.
banyan, yes, and it was detected just fine. (raid5
/home)
Unless you want to learn Samba... you probably don't
though.
so, that's not the reason my f7 install stalled.
well, mine is /var... but even so.
vfat? Can I use it for a such a big drive? Or are you talking
about cifs?
Seriously, vfat sucks. I'm restating this because it really
sucks.
epablo, vfat = fat32
I agree
I select my language and my keyboard layout, and nothing else
happens.
epablo, get a NAS. then you don't have to worry about
filesystems so much
banyan, what language are you selecting?
English.
And US.
Where is the install stalling?
banyan, try disabling the graphical installer.
Immediately after that. Does it both in graphical and
text.
hum
If it's stalling on a package and giving an error, try again. If
it's stalling while resolving deps, just wait... takes forever...
worst thing about Fedora by far.
At least in Network mode.
It doesn't get that far, I don't think.
I mean, it blanks out, using basically 100% of cpu, after I select
the keyboard layout.
Install itself
All in graphics mode.
Um, not quite sure I'm following.
Where can I find doc on kernel parameters? I had to use
nolapic but I want to learn what I disabled
I don't get as far as the license.
That's the sequence... what do you remember doing?
Oh, sorry. I get as far as the keyboard layout. Then nothing
happens.
It's just an "accept" or "decline" message saying "You
understand where to find out this stuff, right?"
epablo, the fedora install guide has a complete list
It's the first stage of the installer
thanks
OK, I probably did go through that.
Hmm, it asked you what kind of layout to try?
epablo,
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f7/en_US/sn-bootoptions-hardware.html
I get as far as the keyboard layout.
I select US, OK, then.... it furiously does nothing.
epablo, well, not totally complete, but good enough. it's
missing the maxcpus, nohz, and a couple others
Hardware RAID vs BIOS?
ok
It's software RAID.
s/vs/via/
But that isn't the root partition. Maybe that doesn't
matter.
it's missing nolapic
what's nohz actually good for, anyway?
It is interesting that the next bit it's doing is messing around
with the partitioning.
Hey all
hey
coolbreeze, disables the crappy new tickless stuff in the .21
kernel that can cause your system to freeze (like it does
mine)
I just installed OOffice rpms off their site (the one bundled
with FC7 didn't have base)
coolbreeze, specificially it's "nohz=off"
andyman53, yum install openoffice.org-base
but now i can't find the apps, they're not under "office" or
on the desktop and the only thing in /usr/bin is an executable
called "ooffice"
ok, thanks
andyman53, see above
Maybe it's trying to figure out how the drives are put
together and gets all locked up.
ok
well I'm leaving for today.. Thanks for your patients
also, "rpm -ql package" lists the files provided by
package
ferrum's command is working now
Did you try running that to see if it at least loads the main
wizard? Likely -writer -calc and -present weren't
installed.
i could've sworn i tried that before, and thats what pushed
me to get the rpms off the site
Then again I could just do the yum network update even though
it's not recommended owing to how the disk driver modules have been
reworked.
yeah it loads a main program that doesn't let you do
anything
yum is working now though....
That installs the database application afaik
you're right, that'd work
just kept spitting back at me "nothing to do" before
"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what
it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed"
(or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask
directly: rpm -q package).
(I believe -base is the excel alternative....
base is the access alternative
calc is the excel analog
yeah
and base doesn't come with fc7
oh! I didn't know there was an access alternative.
Perhaps not by default...
true...
-calc is excel
i'm pretty sure i enabled all the office packages in
setup
If you didn't do it yourself, -base isn't installed.
ok
Still need -writer probably at least... unless that's all you're
missing?
well i'm gonna go through the bases now and install -writer
and -calc
what's up people
There is -impress (Powerpoint) and -draw (Publisher)
also...
i'm familiar with those
scribus
i've been an openoffce guy for a whiiiiile now
and linux guy in general
base works
Not sure why they wouldn't be installed, weird.
i think they were
and then to get base working i effed everything up
i'm taking on the task of converting a really huge amount of
mp3s into ogg
Hahah
huge being 30gb
yay... although you should use wildcards to your advantage
though.
if not more
(if you're not)
i'm not doing command line
tiny chunks at a time
So long as you're not doing it one by one, else imma slap you
through your computer =P
Ahhh... ew...
i'm converting Nevermind by Nirvana right now
Well, have fun I guess
you should spend 10 minutes working out how to do it all at
once
Does ogg have the ld5 type tags?
with a 30GB collection any other way would be quite
unwieldy
Yes. It has metadata
i don't need to do them all at once, i'm not that
pushy
why convert to ogg?
Legality?
well if you're an open source elitist, ogg is the way to
go
it's legal for endusers to own mp3, iirc
or just don't want to put up with mp3 BS
just not corporations
And has anyone done that hack to allow ogg support on an
ipod?
Microsoft recently got sued, and lost 1.5billion because it
ships MP3.
rockbox
right, they're a corporation.
So is Red Hat.
right. But we can work around that.
who sued microsoft?
You lose quality when you convert
Sure, but it's better to just not break the law.
we're not breaking the law. No laws are being broken.
a lot of what i've turned into ogg have been straight from CD
rips
I remember when someone tried to claim copyright on GIF files
but lost
tw2113, then that's great
Not really, Vorbis is actually better quality.
red hat does not come with mp3
yes, it is. However, you lose quality when converting.
best would be to re-rip from the CD
You have to install it from livna, I think.
Not necessarily... you can actually improve quality in some
cases.
banyan, google rockbox for your ipod
lunatik, no, that's impossible. How can you get more data than
is present?
I suppose that would toast my stereo interface.
ferrum ++
Decompressing and recompressing at a better rate.
mp3 is lossy
from what i've read and heard, if you mess up rockbox, just
plug it back into itunes and the apple software takes over
again
both vorbis and mp3 are LOSSY compression scheme
tw2113, make sure your mp3-ogg transcode has a
higher-than-normal bitrate and it won't sound THAT bad
*schemes
i'm going with 192kbps
tw2113, e.g.: mpg321 foo.mp3 -w - | oggenc -b192 -o foo.ogg
-
hello everyone
I have problem with the chcon command
We can guess the issue, but it'll take a while.
chcon -t httpd_sys_content_t svnaccess.conf
failed to change context of svnaccess.conf to
system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t: Invalid argument
lunitik, I think the syntax of the command is fine
lunitik, but I got that error
I'm just guessing but I think -t should be defined, it's
input probably is not the file you're trying to change
is there a divx for linux ?
And the error would seem to agree.
how do you change to a directory with a name that has spaces in
it, in command line?
One thing
forms are opening in read only
Kinda... there is divx support... install 'gstreamer-ffmpeg
gstreamer-ugly gstreamer-bad' from Livna
any way to change that?
you might be interested in something like this:
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/ABX-Comparator+(script+for+amaroK)?content=21358
feared, yes. vlc and xine (from livna) play DivX.
use \ .... so '/path/to/File\ with\ spaces'
oh great he left
_
ok
lunitik, you mean I can't set the security context
httpd_sys_content_t to a file?
tw2113, or enclose the filename in quotes
you can encapsulate the path in single quotes too
that seems easier to me most of the time
so either single quotes or escape characters
or double quotes
or be lazy and do "startofthingwithspaces*endofthing"
I don't use QT apps under Gnome, but looks interesting
I think if you're specifying a type, you should... specify the
type...
lunitik, in the command, I specified the type is
httpd_sys_content_t
That is a file... not a type
lunitik, httpd_sys_content_t is a type, I checked it in SELinix
Policy Analysis
Hmm, so you're applying it to nothing...
nevermind, you are... I didn't see the space.
lunitik, so what cause the problem the?
then?
It should work like that, provided it knows what
httpd_sys_content_t is... I'm assuming it's a default rule?
Guys, I found something rather strange about the graphical yum
package manager.
yes, httpd_sys_content_t is an existing default type
trying to test the latest ATI/AMD r500 reverse engineered
driver
on FC7
sorry F7
Like if the download fail because of missing dependencies,
the package manager has to re-download the whole thing
again.
try using absolute or relative path to svnaccess.conf ?
but the configure script is complaining about missing
pciaccess
which when searching around is part of xorg...
I have the devel / sdk packages installed as well as most xorg
packages
but this doesn't seem to be anywhere
Remember current directory isn't part of path....
anyone know where I might find pciaccess or libpciaccess for
xorg in F7?
yum provides those_files?
no package I can find provides pciaccess anything
or yum search
yum list pci lists the pciutils
lunitik, absolute path have the same problem
it does
take wildcards, I mean
not familiar with using yum to search for provides
looking...
I just told you the command...
yum provides *pciaccess*
thanks
wildcards work, but if you do "yum search something*" and a file
in that directory is named something-blah, it will resolve the
wildcard to that filename
no matches found
this is odd, as I can see pciaccess in the git repo for
xorg
has anyone running the ppc64 version of fc7 managed to get the
sun jdk 1.5 to compile?
I came to the room late, what command and error are you
getting? not that I can necessarily help, just curious
chcon -t httpd_sys_content_t svnaccess.conf
^^ tinh's command
fonts.scale;mkfontdir"?
you already had him check dmesg to see if the security change
isn't being denied?
yeah, thanks lunitik but no matches and a locate pci doesn't
turn up pci anything useful
I am trying to install a font
failed to change context of svnaccess.conf to

I'm sure I'll use it again
Last two messages from me are to you.

thanks
digdug, here is the command chcon -t httpd_sys_content_t
svnaccess.conf

lunitik, do you know how to check that a security type

never mind
because I get the same error if the type doesn't exist (chcon
-t invalid_t file)
back
if anyone missed me, i'm touched
and by touched i mean the command line

darn technicalities
i'm central time, so i have 70 minutes
mkinitrd = 6.0.9-7. is needed by package kernel"
what should I do?
this is when i'm trying to do a yum update
Where can I find the default yum.conf?
for... FC6 I think
Ktron, download the rpm and extract the yum.conf
sorry to beat a dead horse, but has anyone managed to get the
sun jdk 1.5 to compile on fc7 for ppc64 ?
Yeah, 'spose
I've googled with every term I can come up with, the closest
I get is a ubuntu forum where they suggest using the ibm
jdk
Second question, how can I tell what version of Fedora am I
running?
(I didn't setup the server, someone else at work did)
cat /etc/redhat-release
Ktron, uname -r and look at the end
or that
Nice, thanks
FC4... heh, time to see if I can track down that rpm
I'm on a brand new (clean) install of fedora 7
hooray!
but when I try to yum update it has dependency issues
what issues?
I upgraded al packages but the kernel
upgrade?
when updating the kernel it says I need mkinitrd = 6.0.9-7.1
but that version isn't in the repos
sontek, I get that also. This was a new update that was pushed
and is broken. Give it a bit and they'll fix it.
mine does too
i cant update
chowmeined, sure you can
how do I check free hdd space?
yum update --exclude=kernel*
df
df -h for humans
thx
hodges, df -h
df -h so it's human readable
except, i want to install xen kernel
chowmeined, then yeah, you'll have to wait a bit. (a day or two
maybe)
539MB available
Is it believeable that an FC4 hasn't had any updates for...
months?
Ktron, FC4 isn't supported.
no new updates, ever.
lol
ah ha
Heh, my workplace is spektakular
thanks everyone
how do I check the changelog of an rpm? Not the packaging
changelog, but the code changelog?
Hello i have question i only see dvd files and my server only
has cd-rom where can i find the cd rom iso's for fedora core
7
there aren't any
jaapblaatgaap2, that'd be the LiveCD
And the liveCd has everything ?
you can install from the livecd's
no, you install then through yum.
it has the base system.
it's (Changelog) sometimes included with the docs
only text?
or also gnome
jaapblaatgaap2, gnome or KDE depending on which livecd you
choose
aah oke
otherwise you'd need the srpm or the original tarball
ah alright thanks
guess this is gnome ?
Fedora-7-Live-i686.iso
yes, that's gnome
aah great guys thanks alot
i like gnome
I'm considering switching to xfce
fair enough
i like GTK+
same, glade is awesome to develop with
i just end up using pygtk...
python has glade support, you know.
yea
but its so simple already, glade seems like overkill
i suppose if my projects were bigger...
it makes sense for sufficiently complex programs.
it also results in cleaner code, and is easier to edit / create
:/
abstracting layouts from application logic is a good
thing(tm)
it's nice to be able to create guis visually. I'm not yet at
the level where I can do so through code
well, I could, just after lots of trial/error with packing.
stupid) question before I head out-- what version(s) of FC
are supported? FC7 and... FC6?
FC6 will be EOL in a few months, F7 is supported.
F8 comes out October/December.
FC7 seems pretty alpha
how so?
Thanks ferrum for the answers
did fc5 eol already?
all of the sudden scsi drivers were missing for my
controller
ubuntu, debian, centos have them just fine.. i dont know where
they went
f7 is not alpha, it's been released
why doesn't the text install of f7 allow configuring
lvm?
i dont think fedora's text installer ever has
although, i 'tricked' it into letting me manipulate LVM once by
going forward and then back a few pages
but that was on FC6
any good virtualization program? or simulation? vmware is not
free qemu is slow... another?
xen?
and is free?
yes, you install a special kernel from yum.
el_dan, You haven't done your homework
ok thanks
today i was doing a test presentaion, and i could not get my
laptop to sync with the projector, the projector said the v and h
sync freq were to high, i have used my laptop with a projector
befor, how can i lower the rate for this projector
ammm
el_dan, BTW VMware server is free from VMware. It is not free
as in open..
....
xen is excellent for virtualizing linux
ok, i just wanna run windows under linux, like in virtual pc,
in order to eliminate windows partition, and im completely lost...
ok let me try xen........
el_dan, http://docs.fedoraproject.org/
VIrtualisation on F7
el_dan, With Windows you need full virtualisation. That requires
assistance from the CPU in Xen, or the use of KVM. I am reluctant
to say this, but you may be better off using VMware server for
now..
i kind of want to know why you hear the audio when you roll your
cursor over audio files
feature
audio preview
use vmware, kvm is broken in f7 for windows
installations
but xen was broken for windows installs
now xen is broken for linux installs
ferrum, fc7 may not be alpha... you're right, it has been
released. so that means it's beta
do you still have to tweak the source of the vmware kernel
module to compile it?
el_dan, I agree with mutk . vmware is painless, and stable. and
pretty cool
bitchkat, not for FC6, which was the last time I tried
it
chowmeined, i don't think so. i have tested windows , linux
installs on xen. in fedora 7
then again I was running a custom kernel then..
"unsure"
and kvm is also not broken for windows installs on f7. can
you tell the exact problem ?
yes, just install the any any patch
maybe i dont have enough rams
i have 1gb of physical memory
how can i change the refresh rate on the video port on my
laptop,
comphappy, not sure.
is that handled by X?
server and not workstation right?
sontek, i've already done it because it compiles cleanly for me.
I just couldn't remember if there was a vmware update that fixed
it
after windows copies the files to the disks and reboots it can
no longer read the cdrom or iso you are using and therefor cannot
continue the install
sontek, yes that bug has been solved
and if you use file instead of device it gives you random
errors when creating the disk, but it seems to work
anyways
comphappy, xvidtune?
I'll have to check it out again
the projector i had it hooked up to said somthing like 120Hz
v
and it did not support it
sontek, you will soon see the updated stuff in f7. i guess it
has went to testing/ so far.
I for one blame the projector.
as do i
it is 5 years old
Hz is an X setting
interesting, xvidtune says 56Hz H and 60Hz V
good evening folks
yo
tag
What's up man?
orange80, cool, procrastinating from going to sleep
orange80, ... watching mythbusters
Oh, I like that show
orange80, yah, cool show
No TV in the same room as my computer tho
orange80, who says i have a tv?
orange80, tvcard + mythtv
I was just thinking I'd dl some ;-)
don't yet own a tv
he had you there
haha
pembo13_com, have you tried doing live tuning over
eithernet?
pembo13_com, i want to stick my card in a server downstairs and
tune live tv on my desktop..
daMaestro, no, but that sounds intersting, what is it?
daMaestro, oh
i thought that was some software
daMaestro, no, haven't tried that
pembo13_com, it's just using a remote myth frontend
daMaestro, i realise
i just refuse to do it because at this time i would need to
enable at
daMaestro, haven't tried remote myth at all
maybe i'll poke at jrod to hook me up with a repo
link
daMaestro, cool cool
daMaestro, one of the reasons i don't upgrade fedora on
weekdays
daMaestro, gotta make sure i get tvcard and mythtv backup the
same day
tv isn't worth the effort
tw2113, i almost agree with you, but i watch cnn, discovery and
scifi
Yeah, plus it's impossible to start something like that and not
finish it the same night ;-) which means you'll end up staying up
till like 4 am and then have to work in 3 hrs.
tw2113, recently gave up on cartoonnetwork+adultswim
orange80, well i am normally confident enough in fedora to get
things done in a day
orange80, typically i just end up spending ours putting a shine
on my new KDE
orange80, my desktop doesn't have any special hardware
Cool. I'm always on OS X and just use my FC6/x86 box as a Java
EE development environment, so I never really get to play with the
graphical KDE or gnome interfaces.
orange80, ah, fair deal... had my share of OS X
orange80, it's nice, but i wouldn't want to live there
What's up with Mplayer, how come it lags so much now ?
i'm also having some strange issues with xv not running
widescreen
chewed-on, i know there were some changes to the backend (new flags
enabled)
chewed-on, using livna?
hmmm...apparently Linspire signed some deal with MS
link?
I respect using Linux or OS X, but not Windoze.
orange80, i use Windows, on it right now (on my laptop) i
hate it but a guys gotta work
is nvu not in any common fedora repository? i can't seem to
find it, thought it was there
orange80, i'm saving up for a Dell Ubuntu laptop
nvu is not available.
ferrum, not available in what way?
it's not in the repos.
oh, ok
http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2007/06/14/780984-microsoft-signs-another-linux-deal
so install from nvu package?
i.e. non-repo
nvu isn't really worth it from what i've seen
yeah, you could try that.
tw2113, any recommendations instead?
tw2113, what do you use as a replacement for nvu?
but that's mainly cause i tried it on Mac
I'm not sure if it's not in the repos because (1) nobody's
offered to maintain it, or (2) it just flat-out doesn't
work
i tend to just like a text editor
hopefully (1)
i've used nvu a bunch, it's not perfect but it gets the job done
for what i need atm anyway
it's pretty quick for some really basic layout stuff
mac + text crunch = not the best
i have bluefish on my tablet pc
i.e. for friends
bluefish is pretty good
i need to try it out
uses vim for everything
i've got a couple other minor things that i've wondered
about...
Laurel, shoot
ok,
yum extender ... seems to have no icon now. very tiny thing
also on that note, anyone recommend pirut over yumex?
tw2113, i use text editors myself, but that's not a
replacement for a WYSIWYG app
i find it hard to believe in any WYSIWYG
Laurel, i use niether, sorry
and... for some reason my gnome-xchat launcher isn't doing
anything, neither is loading it from the fedora menus.. the icon is
there, it's installed, not sure why it won't start
too much junk code
tw2113, i'm with you there
typing xchat made it work
Laurel, I recommend neither pirut nor yumex.
worst offender ever is Frontpage though
ferrum, you recommend yum, or something else entirely?
yes, just yum
i.e. cli
ah
well it's nice to browse with a gui
imho
I never got into this whole "gui" thing
to me gui's are useful, intuitive tools... they're not
perfect, they don't always do everything, but they have their
uses
it depends on what one is trying to accomplish, i suppose
they're just for people who are scared of text
at least, in this case.
tw2113, frontpage really messup html
my introduction to Linux was on the command line
i disagree... i like text, and i like cli, text editors,
etc., but i also like guis
Laurel, for browsing, GUIs are nice
I'd never choose elinks over firefox, shall we say.
are you on emacs irc mode now?
pidgin
graphically is a good way to organize some kind of
information, e.g. a fairly large, disparate set of frequently
changing things, like the sort of stuff one uses a desktop for...
there's a good reason (imho) that most people use a gui to run web,
mail, office, im, etc., all at once
ferrum, pidgin on windows is nice, on linux, i use kopete
Laurel, good point
i like pidgin on linux & windows for im, never really
tried it for irc
ferrum, does pidgin crash as much in linux?
It's never crashed.
pidgin on linux is pretty solid
ferrum, crashed about 4 times the first time i installed it
on windows
ferrum, also seems to have some msn protocol issues
ferrum, good enough for me though
I just use aim and irc, so I wouldn't have noticed.
ah, and jabber. Nonetheless.
it's had some protocol issues, but it's improved a lot lately,
it seems to me
there's always amsn for msn
Laurel, ah, so i'm not alone, cool
pembo...if you want to see a victim of frontpage, go here and
view the source http://www.departments.dsu.edu/foundation/
pembo13_com, yeah
ferrum, gotta love the simplicity of AIM
tw2113, that's cruel and unusual punishment
tw2113, browsing there now
pembo13_com, through pidgin all protocols have the same
interface. I don't know the difference.
frontpage massacred a lot of babies
(well I do, it just doesn't matter.)
tw2113, i've seen worse
.
ferrum, i like that
i love "watching" the constant improvement of open source
software
i got to clear out a bunch of those pages today
i get to more tomorrow
pidgin, linux, any reasonably known oss project, seems to get
noticeably and significantly better with each iteration
yo ho ho
maturity comes with more developers and users.
ferrum, did you notice new AIM bots?
shadow, did you just call me a ho ho?
:P
and since most of this is spread by word of mouth, the
userbase should grow exponentially with time.
pembo13_com, what is an aim bot?
like an IRC bot, I guess
ferrum, some supposedly computerized AOL contacts that get added
to ones AIM list
no. Usually I talk with humans.
ferrum, they add them self to the "AIM Bot" group
not on my buddylist!
interesting, wonder how comes i got it and you didn't
I registered years ago? not sure.
ferrum, yah, you can remove them, but they seem to just
appear
brb
ferrum, i've been registered for a few years too
i'm going to bed
night all
do you recommend i use xchat or xchat-gnome?
xchat. and xchat-gnome if you are using gnome :d
fair enough
xchat
do not use xchat-gnome, even if you're using gnome.
why so ferrum?
why not?
xchat-gnome is another layer on top of xchat, and it takes
out all of the features.
then what is the point of it?
its existence is a mistake, to say it nicely.
wow
okay lol
xchat aqua kind of sucks too, actually
the only thing that is okay about xchat aqua is that you don't
need X
but I run X anyway, so whatever
in mac that is
ahh, virtualization. but what are you running inside?
sorry, wrong chan
lol
Hello.
yo
Could anyone please help me out with an SELinux Context
trouble.
I am runnign kadmin of Kerberos and am being stopped by SE
Enforcing. Access denied to words file.
sure. turn it off. prollem solved
aha, cynicism
I am hesistant to do that... Would like to keep security as
well....
words file is in /usr/share/dict
selinux is a great idea, for sure
lordloh, ignore any suggestion to turn it off if this a
public server
I only wish I had the time
lordloh, this is F7?
so its context is usr_t
Yes F7.
lordloh, 1. read the selinux tutorial in full at least
once
I was half kidding. okay, maybe 1/4
hi im instaling F7 and the screen gets stuck on "installing SCSI
drivers" i dont have any SCSI drives
why does it do this
is there anyway i can bypass this
is there a context to change to to allow everyone access to
words file?
chcon something ?
lordloh, i can't tell you off hand, i have to take a
refresher read in selinux myself, i think it's worth the
time
anyone?
stil is hella annoying
Busta--, sorry, haven't tried f7 yet
ah
no problem
Busta--, all hard drives are now /dev/sdax
damn f7
i see
Busta--, have you tried textmode installtion
no
Busta--, how long have you waited? also, do you use sata
?
i should try that
ive been waiting for 20 mins
anyone know if i could figure out a way to integrate bash.org
and fortune?
what does fedora use for package management and where can I
get package repositories?
no sata
JakeConno1, RPM + yum
it should have passed this screen by now
JakeConno1,google for repos
"Loading pata_serverworks drivers"
Busta--, did it change?
nope
TheShadowZero, actually yeah, I already did that
im going to try to do text mode, brb
I'm thinking it doesn't like his ide controller
which shouldn't matter text vs. gui
TheShadowZero, are you here?
im here
sorry
could be there is an alternate kernel image to use?
yea, how did you do that?
http://rafb.net/p/NPdFTO15.html
python script I wrote to download all bash quotes into a .xml
file
_all_?
wow
yeah
it does so relatively quickly.
does it update?
you re-run the script to update.
I didn't ever run it more than once i
if you want updates, code it yourself! bah.
ferrum, what is 'fortune' ?
haha
thanks
pembo13_com, it's a program used by wanda, the fortune-telling
fish.
ferrum, interesting
actually wanda uses ddate by default for some reason
TheShadowZero, I have an already-parsed file for you if you
want
no its okay im downloading
it contains all postive-rated quotes
right, but now you need to convert from XML into the format you
want
text mode, same thing
so would fortune automatically use these or will i have to
move the file
ah
pata_serverworks
wtf is that
well id rather learn to do it myself
could you explain how?
ferrum, i wonder if there's a superkaramba applet for
bash
pembo13_com, no idea. In fact I have no idea why I wrote that
program to begin with :/
ferrum, pyhton encourages that kinda of uncessary coding
haha
can i use yum to go to 2.6.22?
ferrum, i've spent hours writing python apps that i've only
used once or twice
jason357, no
jason357, not at the moment, anywya.
can anyone read polish
here
ferrum, its done downloading, whats the next step?
Busta--, no i
not i
how would i go about going to 2.6.22 without breaking
everything
i think i found someone with the same problem but the
response and question is in polish
=(
?
Busta--, post your question to the list
TheShadowZero, write a program to extract the quotes.
oookay well i am not a programmer
TheShadowZero, that's okay, python doesn't bite
or I could just give you the file
it's 3.7mb
TheShadowZero, spend a weekend with it, it'll treat you
right
id have to use python to extract the quotes?
yea, id appreciate the file :P
TheShadowZero, yeah, an xml parser.
TheShadowZero, or perl, or php,, or C++
why on earth you would use any of those for parsing I don't
know
ooh, ill learn C++ next year.
ferrum, i thought perl was nice for parsing
nobody here attends carnegie mellon, right? ;[
ferrum, nope
perl is not nice for anything. Have you looked at it?!
haha
functionally though parsing is its thing
ferrum, bash.org is kinda funny
ferrum, i'd combine that with seenonslash
now now, I don't have _that_ much time to waste.
hahaha
ferrum, yah.. .i'm adding that to my list of projects that i
need to do
... it's a long list
firefox says the xml file is malformed lol
anyway, ferrum, the file?
peace to all gentlemen
and any ladies who stumbled in here by accident
lol
TheShadowZero, propose a way for me to get it to you
would it send over irc?
nope
ohhh
hold on
you cant send text files over irc? laaame
it's 3.7mb
i dont mean copy and paste
like, DCC
you could email it to me hmm
Here, I'm stealing the bandwidth of a company I did work
for.
Hopefully no one will notice _
lol
wget http://www.grove-creek.com/images/bash_positive
let me know when it's done so I can delete.
its done
thanks
np
okay so now that i have the text
how does one form a .dat file with it
that is left as an exercise for you
alright
how do i configure the default ati drivers that fedora 6 has
from clean install
i have tried the proprietary ati drivers before with no
luck
okay that was easy enough
http://rafb.net/p/qm5pg371.html
that is what my xorg.conf looks like now
pata_serverworks-suspend-resume.patch
how do i updated my install cd with that patch
anyone already make an rpm w/ kernel 2.6.22-rc4for fedora
7?
can i disable pata_serverworks somehow
if not, i will just do it....
jason357, nope.
alright
going to bed
ok, i will do it
where is the kernel source rpm?
night
default from fedora 7
it isnt in th same place as fc6
ah, I found the SRPMs
nm
night
where do I post yumming updates issues?
CRASH69, no idea
https://bugzilla.redhat.com , but
thx
hey guys, i was in here earlier
i'm having an issue with rebooting via SSH
i've tried using several commands, yet it refuses to reboot,
instead, it hangs at the end of the shutdown process
JPDota, some remote filesystem can't be unmounted?
ferrum, im not sure what you mean, im only accessing it
remotely
what is it hanging on?
it hangs after all the shutdown scripts run
it doesnt shut off
and then come back up
I'm not sure then, sorry ;_;
must sleep though. 3am here. night
night
thanks anyways
anybody?
huh, building this kernel is sorta a pain in the ass
why are you building it?
/who #linux
=(
i want the 2.6.66-rc4 kernel
haha bleeding edge enough?
does it have a particular feature you like?
wifi drivers require it
ah
No patch number 10 when i comment it out
how do i get it to ignore that?
i cant believe there are 265 linux users in here, and nobody
is talking lol
hmm im going to fool around with my IRC client
there are 264
265 from 24 time zones ... need to consider those who sleep on
their keyboards
haha
264 you say zodiac?
ah true kage, are you among those?
ChanServ is not a user but a system wide bot
good point
im getting frustrated with this problem
anyone know if there is something I need to do to my spec
file to get rpmbuild to ignore Patch10?
can anyone help me set up my xorg.conf
http://rafb.net/p/CD6lVJ62.html
that is what i have
anyhelp would be greatly appreciated
are you having a problem tom?
system-config-display --reconfig
would you mind helping me figure out why my system wont
reboot properly?
anyone know why just comenting out a patch in my spec file
does not work? Why is it still lookinf ogr that pach
number?
banyone know why just comenting out a patch in my spec file does
not work? Why is it still lookinf ogr that pach number?/b
fedoraos.org
rafb.net/paste
*spec
are you asking me to read the rules, or look there for my
answer?
still having problems with the video driver
the problem is that I have a 3d chess game that came with linux
and it runs super super super slow motion
i think it has to be the video drivers
any ideas?
are they installed?
just what came from a fresh install of fc6
what video card do you have
ati radeon x800 pro
http://rafb.net/p/6sNlEr65.html
that is my xorg.conf
didn't somebody say the ATi drivers don't work with FC7?
i'm using FC6
oh
then just download the drivers
one sec
k
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeon.html
do you think you could help me through the install process
JPDOTa
?
i've tried proprietary before and always seem to fail
i can try, i don't have ATi drivers
yeah, i know what you mean
i'm asking you to learn how to ask a question .. and yes
ati's drivers will not work with f7 until 8.38 in about 1
month
not fedoras fault .. ati's closed source binaries
yeah
well i've tried for about 3 months getting fc6 to work
3 months!
yeah
oh yeah
i'm also using amd 64 bit
should i dl different drivers than what you gave me?
3 sad long months
hmm yes
damn ati
well ive already tried various commands, shutdown -r -n,
shutdown -r, reboot, even doing it from the GUI, it refuses to
reboot properly, i've been on forums
gah
are you installing x86_64 fedora?
wrong thing
yes
why?
zodiac, because you need to reverse the polarity of
/dev/null
i was FORMULATING that to you zodi
init 0
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/linux64-radeon.html
-- 64 bit
why not zodiac?
why do you need it?
i don't i guess, but i have a 64 bit processor and i that is
the linux that i have
can you explain to me why you need x86_64 instead of x86
software on your computer?
i'd suggest you try the x86 version
because i have x86_64 version of fc installed
i bet you'll have less troubles
maybe so
but what i have installed now i'll try to get working
http://rafb.net/p/h4CZBm44.html
The display driver requires POSIX shared memory to be enabled on
the system.
it says i need that before trying to install
any ideas?
what do i need to do to enable power management? all i seem
to be able to find is laptop battery which doesn't do me much good
since this isn't a laptop and doesn't run on a battery.
line 505
No patch number 10", so something is telling it to look for
patch10, which i need to stop, i just do not know what is telling
it to look for patch 10
zodiac, I comment out line 505 and get the same error
No patch number 10
fc6? f7? .. if fc6 , have you tried kmod-fglrx from
rpm.livna.org ?? ... if f7, theres no ATi driver that compatible
with the latest Xorg yet
if i run init 0, that brings the system down, should i put
that somewhere in the reboot script?
sorry .. 1054 too
just saw that also
thank you
trying now
i'm not really sure what you're doing .. reboot, shutdown -r
now .. should reboot the system
init 0 is a system halt
yes, sorry, i am trying to reboot the system, from command
line (via SSH)
ok .. then the reboot script or shutdown -r now
as root of course
i've tried both
they hang after the shutdown scripts run
im running FC7 on a dell poweredge 6450
what repos do you have enabled?
the standard ones
i just upgraded from FC6 today
through yum
it was a problem in FC6 as well
well .. that could be part of the trouble
f7 .. too many changes
true, but it was a problem before that too, in FC5, FC6
does running "yum update" give you an error?
those were clean installs
no
everything is up to date
could be a dell specific thing in the bios .. not sure
check /var/log/messages*
see if there are any clues there
alright, im going to take this laptop mobile...haha need to do a
hard reboot to get that server up again
zodiac. how do i check what kernels/kernel headers i have
installed?
rpm -qa|grep -i 'kernel'
even without quotes
im back
hey
thanks
got anything to work?
hello!
can anybody help? Got into trouble with compiz and now my
windows lack of the O, X and []
nope still trouble shooting
I cant even move or resize my windows
http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-poweredge/2006-March/025258.html
judging from this, it may be an old error that was never
fixed
can anybody help me restore my windows? I tried uninstalling
compiz but it doesn't work
no window frames...
an Nvidia Card?
yes
welcome to the new world, a world of hurt, pain and
suffering
I've only managed to get it back once
lol
i see what you mean..
and I had to twiddle with settings to get metacity back
that sucks
yes, so it seems i will have to figure out this IPMI
thing
well, I think that disabling desktop effects would do the
trick... I only need to do it by hand
IPMI?
that's what they cite in the mailing list as the
workaround
does anybody know how to disable destkop-efects by hand?
ah. good luck
thanks
i don't know but i'd guess it's either in gconf settings
somewhere or maybe a config file in your home dir (as the effects
can be switched on/off per user)
I already deleted .gconf .gconfd .gnome and .gnome2
should i somehow contribute this rpm when i get it working to
save others the trouble?
as in deleted the directories?
yes sir
uh oh
no real problem, you just reset your config... like reseting
your user account
still, this didn't resolve my problems
what happens when you restart X (ctrl-alt-break)
then maybe it's some kind of application hook that didn't go
out right. did/can you try to re-enable compiz?
nothing... normal login window and then, when I login as
renich, no window frames
ok, I'll try that... I'll have to log out since I can't focus on
another window
brb
I do know that it's an issue with the Nvidia drivers
Ok, reinstalling compiz solved my problem
i may have found another work around on wikipedia, of all
places, but i cant really understand what the article is talking
about
once you do compiz-ish stuff, you lose your window
decorator
mind taking a look?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_PowerEdge#Linux_reboot_issue
..reading
interesting.what happens now when you enable compiz now?
appreciate it
so, I lost the frames while enabling compiz and got them back by
uninstalling and reinstalling compiz
let me check it out
heh
something similar happened on my girlfriend's laptop when i put
fc6 on it for her
we enabled compiz, and then played stepmania for a while. stepmania
was a cvs snapshot version, so when it crashed compiz bugged out
and performed very much similar to what Renich now experienced
so i'd guess it's maybe graphics hook somewhere around XGL or
something, because her entire desktop became background-only upon
login, no toolbars nothing
i'd say don't use desktop effects when playing fullscreen
games or movies .. #1 not needed at that time #2 using resources
that are best left unused or used elsewhere
it seems you were right, it is a dell problem
unfortunately, i have the latest BIOS
k, that just explains what you could call a hardware bypass.
guess i could describe it as instead of using a system call to
initiate an action linux modifies something in the bios to which
the bios automatically reacts
but what i can unfortunately not say is how to use it
sorry
thanks for trying haha maybe someone in here
understands?
ok, complete PC freeze
zodiac, perhaps you understand what i need to do, because
neither frozty_sa nor i know exactly what it means? we are
referencing this wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_PowerEdge#Linux_reboot_issue
does anyone know why i get this error when trying to
aticonfig " segmentation fault"
