that's my friends computer, in my computer no problem
but i've 4/3 screen

and in totem?

no problem in totem

and mplayer is ok without manually tweaking?

yes
but I want xine

xine has 'advanced' settings that you have to enable in the settings windows, did you check those?

no clean flash video with xine
where is it ?
StevenOdb, ??

sorry gotta go

I think that's a video scaling problem in Xine

ping

Normally you're supposed to ping a specific person...

ping fucker

in this case, any response was welcome

Hey All, I have just made the jump from Linux to windows and no longer have windows running @ all. I have most of the things I need however I dont have a usenet Binary Client for downloading .NZB files... What is a gool linux host alternative to Neews Leecher?

you mean you've made the jump from windows to linux?

tin

Yes sorry
LOL
tin huh

which group do I have to be a member of in order to rip music from a cd?

the RIAA

KAudioCreator says I don't have permission to even read from the device?

Thanks

that directed to me?

alex[slx]: try running it as root

ok, but I don't want to have to do that

sudo
and create a wheel group

does anyone has a fix for the x-fi blaster drivers? Creative labs aint supporting them, yet, maybe there are other drivers i can use? hope there is because im going crazy without the emotions...

I'm already a sudo user

Then run it using sudo

ok

*fine

Error trying o open /dev/scd0 exclusively
to*
(Device or resource busy)

only the X-fi extreme audio is supported bu alsa, see http://opensource.creative.com/soundcard.html#X-FI for more info

Have you tried k3b?

that's under sudo
I want to rip mp3s
didn't know k3b did that

You said a music cd, you didn't specify a media type

id like to get an X-fi but no linux drivers, and apparently the extreme audio is just a trumped up SB live

if it's mp3 just drag and drop them

this is all well and good
but I still want to get KAudioCreator working

alex[slx]: Have you tried cdparanoia from a CLI?

moin

yeh

And?

just gives me the same errors
resource busy
I'll check it again

Then that is your issue, not kaudiocreator

oh wait

since it's just a front end for it

now it's done something else
oh ffs
now everything looks fine
OMG
I took the cd out before

how to install ati propiretary driver? is it somewhere in repositories?

now I've put it back in and it all works fine
WTF

Whats the default image viewer in fedora?

Not for F7.
gthumb

It depends on your DE

is there xgl package in repos (i will try drivers from ati.com)

ok KAudioCreator works fine now

That is not accurate (about gthumb)

but it can't find the lame encoder

Do NOT use the drivers from ati.com.

It depends on the end users DE

just need to install it

(and what they have installed)

how then i will have 3D?

FC6.

come on...

No, don't tell ME to come on. Yell at ATI.

ati = broken

hehe

get an NVidia :P

alex[slx]: i cant i have laptop...

where is the best hosting tutroial on installl new nvidia drivers on fedora 7 on geforce 7600gs?

alex[slx]: but for desktop surely it will be nvidia

http://www.fedoraunity.org/nvidia

thanks

My hunch was right about the issue being the unnecessary lvm volume.

Hrm. Or not.

Took that out, and the DVD promptly let me update to f7.

yes or not
seems to have been moved

http://www.fedorasolved.org/nvidia

ivazquez thanks

ah ok... damn laptops
I have an 8MB Savage lol... no desktop cube for me
it struggles with a transparent panel lol
what's with f7 freezing sometimes?
is there a fix for that

Fedora freezing or your DE?

well

ctrl+alt+backspace

ah ok
sorry, yeah that fixes it... stupid KDE
actually... my mouse still works

I've had no issues
And I only run KDE

gah
mmmm
well

So I would look towards your components

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work

would be interesting to find out how many fedora users use KDE as their primary DE

but my mouse still goes

Depends where you ask
If I asked in my circles, then it would be 80%

i am KDE

CyberSpy, curious as to all fedora users

hehe

aldin, hah

Again, it would be where you asked

is that a fedora thing?

You couldn't get all Fedora users to ask them

true

You would have to ask in VERY neutral places
and communities

like this channel i guess
and the mailing list

That wouldn't be accurate either

chuck a poll on some popular fedora site

because how many use the mailing list or IRC

ahhh X is fucked
99.9% cpu

there IS a way to do it

alex[slx], read the channel subject

voluntary survey upon install
(which DE, etc)

CyberSpy, self selecting set, i guess that could work

right after Anaconda is done
But then you run into other issues on sending information, etc
like other OS's
so voluntary is best
If enough people did it

yah, that was discussed on -devel
never really materailzied

we will see when KDE4 comes out hehe

have you seen the Plasma demo yet?
from a few days ago

CyberSpy, got a link?

i saw some screenshots on davidvignoni blog

one sec it was on kde-look and dot.kde
This is a video with GREAT commentary
and there's some plasmoids now
one sec
http://www.kde-look.org/news/index.php/plasma+screencast?id=256&name=plasma+screencast&PHPSESSID=561bd72b89462c7286acbced8f505b26
whoah wtf
http://www.kde-look.org/news/index.php/plasma+screencast?id=256&name=plasma+screencast
good thing I wasn't logged in

sweet, OGG

my session id should NOT have been included on that link copy

command 'g++' failed with exit status 1 -- how do I fix that?

ffs... why can't this stupid thing just leave my display modes alone

It's 2 separate links btw, one for Plasma, one for the plasmoids

I was looking at at this list of linux commands on the net, and it said that "there is no undelete in Linux"

Kind of unusual question but, does anyone know of a nice alarm clock app for linux?

does that mean that 'rm' sets those segments on your HD to zero?

How would you undelete it in Linux?
What DE are you using?

blame, there's an error in whatever it is you are compiling

Uhm, DE?

achtung_, kalarm

Desktop Environment (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, *Box, etc)

no real clue how to undelete anything (no matter the os), though I do know there are people that specialize in data recovery. I was wondering how 'rm' works

Nope, not using KDE
Gnome

That's apples and oranges, one is software one is hardware

traverser, rm just removes the filesystem links to the data segments

Just because you can't undelete in Linux, doesn't mean you cant remove the hardware and doing something with it

ah. So the data would be recoverable? (I think that's what I'm being told)

traverser, yes, but not very easy

Not if it's an encrypted file system though
Most OS's don't delete to DOD standards though
you would use an app for that

So uhm, am I shit out of luck?

achtung_, out of luck in what sense?

Look for some gnome applets or

ok, thank you. I'm mainly wondering for security reasons (I was hoping that linux host would be built epic like that)

umm what are they called
gdesklets

i think that's it

one sec achtung_

ok

www.gdesklets.org
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDesklets
I believe there are regular apps as well
There are a few for KDE I know that

the name gives me this whole "widgets" feeling that i don't like

one that sits in your systray
Well, it's a widget engine
That's how things like that work

well, thanks for the help

Can someone point me in the right direction to ger a beryl tutorial to install it.... I am guessing there is more too it than just installing Beryl using add programs menu

i'll look around a bit

I like KAlarm

To install it, that is all there is

I'm using Gnome

lol, my apologies

I came to this conclusion myself which is exactly why I ask how do I FIX this?

GAlarm

I read that and completely forgot it, it's early in the morning atm

blame, the simple answer would be to fix the code

Did you install gcc-c++?

http://www.gnomefiles.org/

Thanks

np
Have you gone to Google and searched for "alarm clock for gnome"?
I got 919,000 results

Is it possible to change your /home/ to a different harddrive than the one Fedora is installed on?

how would I do that?

i am watching .ogg plasma clip...

I ran to sourceforge :p

ivazquez:
# rpm -q gcc-c++
gcc-c++-4.1.2-12
sorry

Amazing eh?
I have KDE4 devel running on a box behind me

blame, well that's a complicated question that depends very much on the code... short answer being use a text editor to open the troublesome code and find and fix the problem

cant wait for KD4...

Just a few more months

yap

it's just around the corner

i like the form factor concept

brb throwing on some coffee
Have I helped everyone that needed it before I go?

anyone know how to change your /home directory?

Please define "change"
change the name of "home" or the actual home directory

Fedora 7 Running Linux Drivers is Amazing

change the directory of home from / to /storage (which is my extra HD)

Feeling like taking over for me for a few while I brew some coffee?

For my Nvidia I mean

Go.

Thank you brb

Why not mount it in /home?

traverser, system-config-users
traverser, it won't move your home dir for you however

Does anybody have a good binary usenet client with a gui for downloading nzb's ??????

yeah, that's what I need. My OS is installed on my smaller harddrive, and when I put together my new computer, I'd like my /home to be on the bigger harddrive (seeing as wine likes to install so much crap there as it is, I'm running low on space)

traverser, mirror your home dir to the location of chose, then use system-config-users to change the location, then logout, and log back in

Is the drive empty right now? And what format is it?

good question

this is mainly for my new computer. ATM, my computer is not empty (neither are) and the FS is ext3
my harddrive, sorry

technically, there shouldn't be executeable files in your homedir, so this could work on fat32 too

how to see installed files of lets say "bcm43xx-fwcutter" package
with yum

ok big problem now

peace to all, bed time

sleep well

ivazquez, good luck

as soon as fedora start X I get no output to the screen and it turns off

traverser, merci beacoupe

alex[slx]: your whole computer shuts off, or the x-server?

X doesn't appear to start

hi. how can i test the integrity of the live cd i got from a linux i run now ? and not from the live cd

I get no output to the screen
then the screen turns off because it doesn't detect a signal

you don't even get a command line?

nup
absolutely nothing
fedora is being really weird today
things have just stopped working

i 've got the os.img inside the squashfs.img pmounted in loopback. so now what ?

I can get X up but sshing in and starting it
I also deleted the conf file
so it would create a default one

try to find the log file?
I can't really give you a definite answer, as I've never encountered this problem
so these are just possibilties, sorry

It says Failed to load module "vga" (module does not exist, 0)

gfx card?

NVidia GeForce 4

now, why would any reference to glx make my x server crash?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA

I might use sys-unconfig and see what happens

yum list all
it should give you a list of all installed and available packages

this is weird, when I shut it down remotely it displays the shutdown of the services

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLX
"OpenGL Extension to the X Window System") provides the 'glue' connecting OpenGL and the X Window System

think that may have done it

alex[slx]: check your monitor connections to your computer

it's fixed

cool

but X is pissing me off

is kernel-devel (kernel headers?)

it refuses to let me set up my monitor, reboot and keep my settings

No, kernel-headers is kernel headers.
alex[slx]: Use system-config-display.

Does anybody have a good binary usenet client with a gui for downloading nzb's ?????? sorry if you replied i old not find if you did

I've been using that
I set it up
and then it reverts back to an inadequate refresh rate and wrong resolution

do you have the right gfx driver installed? (jw)

i think so
it was all working fine yesterdau
today it's changed for no reason at all
(appears that way anyway)
FFS
I've just restarted X with the new settings and the screen has turned off
wtf?
for some reason the X config file doesn't have any resolution entries in it

how to stop yum from downloading i press ctrl+c and it just changes to another mirror?!?!

so obviously system-config-display is screwing something up

try ctrl-q
or just q
if not that, try c

none

Hit Ctrl-Z then type "kill -9 %1".

or ps axu | more
then find your uid (mine's 500)

thanks
so %1 means to kill that stopped proces

No, %1 refers to the first job.
When you hit Ctrl-Z you'll see a number in brackets.
That's the job number.

[1]+ Stopped yum install kernel-headers
that?

Yes.

what is the name os ssh server package

where are the resolution entries supposed to go in xorg.conf?

i tried yum install ssh

yum list | grep ssh

The ssh server is installed by default.
Anyways, it's openssh-server.

Well, now I have the 3228.fc7 kernel loaded, I'm watching recordings with myth and bob appears to be my uncle.

alex[slx]: thanks man... i used to do search instead list... man this yum is nice... (btw i am apt-get "guru" hehe)

alex[slx]: yum list \*ssh\*

And it wouldn't really have been an issue that I got here using yum update if it weren't for my spazzed out lvm volume.

ok
can someone please explain to me why the F*** this stupid thing reverts to settings that aren't what I set it at when I restart X
I want 1600x1200 resolution, with 85Hz
not 1920x1440 and 70Hz

alex[slx]: rpm -q system-config-display

have you tried finding the config file on your system, su to root, then edit it with whatever text editor you use?

1.0.51

i wanna to firestarter to be my default firewall how do i disable default F7 firewall

chkconfig iptables off

there's nothing to change
it looks ok
except there are no reslution entries

alex[slx]: Have you tried running s-c-d from the console?

yeah

what command do i type to run a .run file?

thank u for being so helpfull! i havent seen someone to help this much...

set the res then save it
?

where do I set the res?

First run file against it.

there aren't any entries!!!

alex[slx]: Run s-c-d as root from the console.
Add --reconfig if need be.

I already have

just ./*.run
first chmod it to be executable with 'chmod 755 *.run'

it says ./ bash is a directory

make sure you're root before you try to edit the file, otherwise I'm pretty sure it will make a blank file by the name you give it

this looks better

u need to be in folder where is xour .run file

beautiful!

lets say ati-driver.run

its on the desktop

Do NOT install that!

ok, go to desktop
ok, it is just example

It WILL NOT WORK with F7.

cause i know it is .run extension

Done and its working
THanks

PLUS it will break your system in subtle ways.

how to start ssh server?
is it in /etc/init.do?
it is...

It's started by default as well.

sshd
not for me

chkconfig sshd on

it just generating ssh rsa

Move your mouse around a bit.

what mouse?

the rc script that starts sshd generates the server hosting keys. Check your firewall -_-

No mouse on the system? How about Internet connectivity?

what mouse man?

If you're stuck on generating the keys then your system isn't generating entropy fast enough.
The one connected to the system.

its ok, SSH RSA done...
how to install apache2 with yum?

httpd

yum install httpd

ok, thanks

Ha! en garde!

how to start httpd?
it wont with chkconfig...

Nope.

does anyone?

service httpd start

thanks thats it

what is different ia64 and 64 platform

what is difference between chkconfig and service?
can i use service sshd start?

chkconfig determines when a service will be started automatically.
service actually controls it.

use man.

Morning ya'll
I'm having a bit of trouble installing Fedora Core 7
Whenever it boots of the DVD image, in the graphical setup, it gives me garbled lines and funky graphics which I can't read
Is there a way to remedy this?

What video card?

nVidia GeForce 6800GS - it's recognized by the setup when it probes for a graphics card

You need to force the installer to use the vesa driver I think. Check the install docs for how.

Right on, thank you kindly.

This isn't a new problem since upgrading to f7... but it's still annoying! I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (logitech) with its own little usb dongle. During boot, the thing causes a bunch of hid-core.c errors and I have to pull the usb dongle and reinsert it because my keyboard will be dead.
anyone know about that bug?

Did you check BZ?

BZ?

/topic, at the end.

What is a swap partition and why do I need one to install Fedora Core 7?
And why can't I see my Windows XP partition there already?

the swap partition is the portion of the hard drive that linux uses as virtual memory when it runs out of physical memory.
it's similar to the windows swap file only instead of using an actual file, linux uses a partition on the hard drive instead

It can't see Windows XP because you haven't installed NTFS support.

you can't see your windows parttion because your kernel isn't yet aware of ntfs
easily solved
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs-read-write/
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs/

No no no - I don't care about seeing a windows partition afterward - I want to see it during the install program

It looks like there is some knowledge of it being an issue.
probably got back-burnered because of the f7 release.

I'm just installing Fedora now and when it gives me the option to select a partition, it's just a bunch of highly WEIRD stuff

then chose to manually partition your drives if you want to "see" it
bthen chose to manually partition your drives if you want to "see" it/b

Right on, let's try this again

download gparted, and create an ext3 file system on a partition then select remove linux partitions and all data scheme
simple way saves making a mistake

Why is fedora 8 due out so soon?
November of this year? That's kind of odd. 5 months per rev?

They're trying to resync to the GNOME schedule.

/lit

Well, that's pretty much it. This thing's back up and running pretty much. lirc works, myth works, x works, the sound works.

hello, I'm curious about the fedora 7 GDM theme, is there any patch applied against gdm used by fedora?

Nothing for the theme.

how does it makes the face browser background black and the foreground white?

http://art.gnome.org/themes/gdm_greeter/

is it by the theme itself that makes the face browser background black?
the flyinghigh theme
I think there must be some patches applied

http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/rpms/gdm/F-7/

anyone know where can I download the /usr/share/gdm/themes/FedoraFlyingHigh theme?

In the fedora-logos package.

thanks!

Or maybe redhat-artwork...
Okay, redhat-artwork it is.

there's no xml file for the gdm theme, hmm..

It's in redhat-artwork.

greetings
anyone using ipcop here ?
can i combine ipcop server with dns server from windows 2003 ?

hmm. thanks, the artwork are not in the cvs though, but inside the rpm files.

my /etc/rc.local is not executed .. it is set to chmod 755 and i have the #!/bin/sh
there could be other reasons why not to be executed
if i run sh /etc/rc.local owrks ok

ALVAN, put in /etc/rc.d/

it is there
or what else to put ?
i can add a script in chkcconfig
but i am wondering why iti s not executed
all looks ok ..i am missing something
no errors in /var/log/messages

ALVAN, you do have the links from /etc/rcX.d/SXXrc.local to your script?
ALVAN, chkconfig only works for scripts that are made to work with it. the default rc.local isn't

tobi1canobe, i know thtas why i will make a chkconfig --add and set it in /etc/init.d/
it seems i dont have the /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S99local
so here is the problem thanks

You don't need one. There's a file that's executed regardless.

ALVAN, That's the problem. chkconfig doesn't handle it for you

tobilcanobe yes .. chkconfig will handle it if i will add it manually right ? of course this is not the case

ALVAN, I don't think so, but I could be mistaken.

Read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysvinitfiles.

Ahoy gentlemen, I've just installed Fedora Core 7 and when I've tried booting the first time from Grub, it gave me a bunch of errors

can any one help with a continuous reboot after a kernel upgrade
?

ivazquez, ok i will seems i have to make seemlinks from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and have lines of the script in /etc/rc.d/rc0.d for shutdown

Daldous, you have installed Fedora 7 ;-)

after a fresh install I do a yum update kernel kernel-devel and then it does a continuous reboot when trying to use that kernel

No, use use chkconfig to make the links.
*you use

ivazquez, oki thanks

penticlex, boot the old kernel and check the logs for any errors that the new kernel may have spit out

ivazquez, chkconfig doesn't work for all services. read the man page.

It does for every service script written a specific way.

ivazquez, and rc.local isn't one of them. nor rerboot/halt and maybe others

http://fedorasolved.org/installation-solutions/dd-db-fix/?searchterm=grub

the fedora livecd doesnt fit on my blank cd

u need burn to DVD

halt and reboot are the same script, and they are. rc.local isn't a service.

cool, thanks

root@tobsbox:~/wifi/madwifi# chkconfig halt --list
service halt does not support chkconfig

Allright, my boot problem
It spits out a bunch of messages - I've typed those in mspaint and put them as an image on a free image hosting site. Here's the link: http://xs216.xs.to/xs216/07240/my_problem.JPG
I could type them here but it'd spam the channel
The last message is "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init"

The dev lookup is the big problem.
Not a clue how to fix it though.

That's not good

that is strange

Daldous, weren' you asking about that yesterday

4 localhost avahi-daemon[2401]: Failed to read service

say what now

avahi is the FOSS implementation of Bonjour.

FFS ivazquez X has resorted back to 800x600 with 60Hz again

9 localhost hpiod: ParDevice::nibble_read failed: Input/output

does X probe for hardware changes on every start?

did you partition manualy?

and then load the appropriate drivers or something?
