question for you folks...
it works perfectly under firefox but i get a horizontal
scrollbar when viewing the iframe under IE
its a table w/ a dynamic width of 98% showing in the
iframe
firefox squeezes it perfecly... ie throws the damn horizontal
scrollbar
any simple way to work it and still leave vertical scrolling
alone?
Does setting scrolling="auto" work?
nope... still an issue
and besides scrolling="auto" is default for iframe in IE and
firefox
Thought so.
if you've got both browsers installed i can show you
specifically whats going on
I do
instead of width: 98%;, why not leave width alone...
i tried with width not specified and still had the same issue

i tried without even using a table on the page in question
just plain body text
still had horizontal scroll under IE6
try with margin-right: 16px;

upper-latin or upper-alpha
reisio, bbl, thanks, curious to try what i was doing.
latger.
*later.
Why two different ones for the same thing?
why not?
Because... it's... silly?
Isn't it Microsoft's job to come up with a slightly similar
synonym?
Maybe they foresaw this.
...
Microsoft only supports the -alpha's
fwiw
Well, that's good enough, because that's all I wanna use.
The other ones are silly.
But why two that do the same thing still?
"upper-latin" and "upper-alpha" apparently are identical.
you've never noticed anything else slightly illogical in
HTML?
Yes. Every day.
But this takes the price.
Prize.
then don't ask silly questions
or OL? One of them is more correct, but I can't tell
which.
After all, it's a... list of alternatives.
Not numbers.
But you apparently can use it with OL.
In fact, why is this in CSS anyway?
Shouldn't it be a whole different type of list?
unordered, ordered and alternatives.
AL.
upper-latin is better, as the internet _should_ be
internationlized
A)
but it's not
it's very English-centric
and not just English, but en_US
so it's mostly academic
So is upper-alpha meaningful in ordered lists?
Not IMO.
And it's gonna be a nightmare to implement this in my user input
system.
...
well CSS is not meaning, it's style
Exactly.
But this is a matter of meaning.
it's a stupid question :p
Maybe a bunch of linebreaks and manual A), B), C) etc. is
good here?
doubt it
What is the alternative?
Faking a list to style as upper-latin?
or ul.
IMO it makes sense to do ulliA) Blabla/li.../ul.
What do you say about that?
it's just not important how you _style_ an _order_
the order is there because you use 'ol'
Correct semantic structure of a number of alternatives in A),
B), C) format.
it's not a problem
Yes, it is.
nope
do you seriously not have anything better to do? :p
...
.se?
figures
This is one of the many important things I have to decide.
I think you're avoiding my question.
http://www.webmasterworld.com/google_adsense/3369853.htm
Check that out.
It shows what I mean.
That guy has a list of "options" in a "list".
I'm not avoiding your question
I've already said it's unimportant :p
So if it's unimportant, you're OK with it being a bunch of s and
manual A), B), C)?
I'm okay with you doing that - I wouldn't in general do that
personally
...
WHAT would you do, then?
Please stop being mute as a mussle.
What would you in general do personally in this case?
I generally use ol's for ordered lists
Of course.
But is this an ordered list?
A B C?
It's a bunch of alternatives, apparently not really in a list
at all.
that's an ordered list
He's listing different approaches.
Not 1, 2, 3 steps.
who?
The guy I linked to...
http://www.webmasterworld.com/google_adsense/3369853.htm
where?
On that forum for Web masters which does not validate
oh you're just using his post as an example?
Yeah.
you want to know if nesting an ol for the a, b, c, etc. inside
an ol for 1, 2, 3 etc. makes sense to me?
Well... I wanna know what you would do in this case.
I would use an ol with another ol inside the 1st li
Really?
Why?
How is that a nested list?
the a b c follow item 1, and precede item 2
they are part of the first item
Isn't this really just a plain unordered list, with fancy
list-style?
possibly, I haven't read it
You still haven't checked out the page?!
some people do indeed list out their thoughts when they could
just as easily just _fucking say them_ (paragraphs)
but that's their problem
I have, I'm not going to read it
Hrm.
Wanna talk URL schemes?
what about them?
Well...
There are many things to consider.
Let's first assume that we want pretty, rewritten URLs. No exposure
to the underlying scripts or any query strings.
uhuh
It gets kind of messy when you want many variables in a
URL.
not really
/search/foobar -- So far, pretty logical.
indeed
It is kind of implied that "foobar" is the search query.
Let's say there can be simple or advanced search.
/search/foobar/advanced -- ?
no
/search/foobar/type/advanced -- ?
/search/advanced/foobar
What about /advanced_search/foobar?
not a big fan of underscores, personally
it's a simple hierarchy issue
Hrm... arbitrary use for / seems... wrong.
advanced and simple are both searches, so they should go under
search
what's arbitrary about it?
You get that I meant "search types", right? Not queries?
not sure it matters
Like /search?type=advanced&query=foobar. That would be the
raw URL.
Google-like.
I find it difficult to come up with a good "hieracrchy".
/search/advanced/foobar
order_by.
/search/advanced/title/foobar?
Just by looking at that URL, you can't tell what title is
supposed to mean. You can guess, though.
makes sense to me
And what if we have a whole bunch of booleans?
/search/advanced/title/0/0/1/0/1/1/1/0/foobar?
Just seems... unfriendly, somehow.
what're the booleans for?
Well, they could be for various options.
it's not as unfriendly as &foo=0&foo=1 etc.
Or perhaps tiny integers for some selects.
I wouldn't store options in a URI, that seems silly
Are you sure? At least with a querystring, you can see what
they mean.
Why is that silly? You must be able to link to the search
result.
you can't see what they mean any more than you can with a plain
/foo/bar
you can even have /foo/bar=1/ if you really wanted
but like I said it's silly
I'd give the result a title or name
What do you say about having /nice/rewritten/URLs but mixing in
/search?query=string&goes=here?
sounds like an oxymoron :p
Well... :/
So many god damn choices...
By "mixing in", I mean using the latter for parts of the
site.
When there are many options etc.
consistency is good
Indeed.
Has nobody written an article about this?
I could find nothing on A List Apart.
What should I search for?
I need tons of information.
an article on what?
Preferarly by anal-retentive standards nazis.
An article on good URL schemes.
how much cocaine you must've snorted earlier? :p
I doubt you'll find much more than highly personalized blog
entries
Well, /this/style/is_highly/random_as/well.
no it's not
stop misusing words :p
What word(s) did I misuse? :|
'random'
you apparently don't know what it means
Of course I do.
then you don't know what order is
because
/this/style/is/a/hierarchy/.../which/is/innately/ordered
Hrm!
http://www.example.com/category/Web_design/article/How_to_use_the_blink_tag
Is this good or bad IYO?
The category part is of course completely redundant.
how's it redundant?
It's not actually part of a directory tree and not needed
other than for possibly SEO and friendlier URLs.
no such thing as SEO
how is a category not hierarchical?
it is
not like it matters...
if you think something is redundant don't include it in an
example :p
/thread/123/page/1 vs. /thread_123/page_1 vs. /thread/123/1 vs.
/thread123_1 vs. /thread123/1.
just make some decisions, gebus
I cannot...
It must be based on a logical conclusion.
gebus? getElementByUnicodeSystem?
Noooo! It was in SSH to my server!
Any input on the URL scheme discussion?
Or rather endless blabber from me and complete non-caringness from
reisio.
...
I'd go with the folders categorizing
unlesss the thread expected is very low
otherwise, you want to categorize them in an scalable way
/thread/123/1 works better, from folder /thread you can make
other criteria or decisions on certain thread and/or certain post
in it
Better than what?
then else
/ is good for "seperating"...
(Duh!)
If I go with /thread123..., that could duplicate.
Potentially.
sepArate
Right.
