is this a known issue?

bronx, i don't know this error, did you check your media?

not yet, checking underway

bugzilla does not have an anaconda bug listed with "logging" in it's comments or in the summary

I'm trying to connect to an FTP server via lftp, it works from my laptop but not from another server on the same network. Anyone know how I can see the error message?

Hola daMaestro

I am running fc6, how can I change the screen resolution of the login screen and of the graphical loader?

the graphical loader ? the grub or the rhgb ?

The login screen is fixed.
rhgb used a separate config file last time I checked. I'm not sure if that still holds true.
Sorry, not fixed, but rather the same resolution as the users.

Anvil, when all the services are starting
that screen

the rhgb then. see ivazquez comment.

ivazquez, can't be, my login screen runs at a different rez than my user

also need to change the login screen size too

that would be the gdm menu

can you tell me where rhgb and gdm config files are at?

/etc/rhgb/xorg.conf

doesn't exist

Of course not. You have to create it.

sdodson, eww. perl? i resent that remark.

in F7 I ran crontab -u root /etc/crontab before running crontab -u root -e so that I could edit the file like the man pages and such say.. I edited the cron table, saved. then it ran my daily crontab twice.. once at 2 am which I want and then again at 4 am which I don't want. and changed it from.. why?

hey anyone here
i have a problem with yum
anyone here
i have a problem with yum

we heard you the first time

oh sorry i am using fedora 5
yum was working fine
and today all of a sudden it says could not find valid baseurl for repo:updates
i dont do a thing to it
hello

fc5 is dead, no more updates

since today

how can I find the device name of my onboard audio?

but i put the url in a browser and it works
hey and Grummus in the .repo what is the meaning of commenting the baseurl

FC5 is DEAD, there will be no more updates for this distribution

ok tell me why do some repo files have baseurl line #ed

greenberet007, doesn't matter

you mean they closed the repo as well

greenberet007, for fc5 releases, sure

so in my .repos i changed $releasever to 6
still it doesnt work

why should it work? the base repo line is outdated anyway

w3m-0.5.1-15 crashes under screen
(FC6)

BUT they just can change it like that

Anybody experience the same thing?

greenberet007, "they" can do what they like, if you don't upgrade at least once a year fedora is the wrong distribution for you

well i disabled updates repo now it says the same for freshrpms

...or knows why?
Hello!

ok, you beat me, fc5 has a few days left to live, until june 29 2007

anyone have a problem with one of the alt keys not working on a usb keyboard?
can I beat you too?

sempuki, i have a keyboard where the left Ctrl key doesn't work. I figure I've gotten a good 12 years out of a $10 keyboard

hehe, this one is brand new

sempuki, my pc does not have a ps/2 keyboard connector, so i have to use usb keyboard, no problems with the alt key so far...

hey sempuki remember me

Does w3m crash (seg fault while scrolling down a multi-page URL) under screen alone? Latest versions of screen and w3m under FC6.

¤¨¹

in yum .repo files why is the line containing baseurl commented

in FC6 my keyboard worked fine
but now if I change to JP layout, it tries to write in katakana

you know anything about yum .repo files

not really, but people pay me a lot of money to figure things out so...

i'll pay you in the far future

just figure out why my keyboard is screwed
that and why bozozoku think its fun to drive around revving their shitty moped engines

POSIX shared hosting Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D apps
does anyone know how to do this?
i'm trying to install ati drivers

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/

"man yum.conf" is a good start

Did you compile host the kernel yourself?

wild guess, youre missing some sort of -devel rpm
because in india theyve got no bandwidth

but yesterday it was working

i just did a clean install of fc6
so now i'm trying to install the ati drivers

all the more reason why you need a lib thats not included standard

*Don't* use the drivers from ATI.

which ones should i use then

What ATI card do you have?

ivazquez, for some cards, thats all that works except for vesa

radeon x800 pro

Im looking

Older ones are better off with the "radeon" driver

Use the packages from livna.
Let me find you the URL...

i've tried the livna drivers before and they didn't work
but i was on a 64 bit version of linux then,

If the livna drivers don't work, then the OEM drivers won't either.

i just installed 32 bit
thought i'd have less trouble

radeon driver won't give you 3D

ivazquez, fglrx works fine for me but then i consider those the drivers from ATI (just repackaged by livna)

why not?

It only has support for 3D up to 9800 or so.

my radeon card works great on XP
i thought linux would be just as good or better

It would... if hardware companies would cooperate.

so what should i do?

You need the binary drivers from ATi for 3D to work

theres a dev/shm on my computer

help! i cannot access my cd or dvd drives anymore, and i have no idea why?

maybe your automounter is not working, have you tried manually mounting it?

Can I run revisor from FC6 to build an F7 install DVD? I don't have access to F7 install media yet

Exactly what is it that you think you mean by "access"? Don't make people guess.

I have not yet had success with that.

And the reason you don't use the actual F7 install DVD would be...?

Lo-bandwidth, got the repo from a friend

well usually it auto-mounts when i put a CD in and it's not doing that anymore. and doing things like dmesg show a bunch of hardware errors.

the friend doesn't have the install DVD.

however if i open up a vmware windows xp machine i can use the same dvd drive perfectly fine

Which, of course, is utter nonsense... this "friend" has sufficient Bandwidth to download 9 gb of stuff, but couldn't grab the smaller installation DVD instead? Please.

Of course, but it'd be too much to ask of an acquaintance. Anyway, I'm just wondering if it's possible.
Of course, but it'd be too much to ask of an acquaintance. Anyway, I'm just wondering if it's possible.
The pains we go thru' without broadband

It wasn't too much to ask him to download 9 gb of random stuff, but it *is* too much to ask him to download 6 gb worth of *useful* stuff. I see.
Ah, more cluelessness.

No dude, the friend's friends already have access to DVD which they'll give him when he goes back to school
They asked him to download the repo, not I

okay i will simplify it. "cannot open /dev/dvd" even though my fully functional dvd drive, which worked fine yesterday, is on and plugged in

I know, I know, this is all too much
So you've tried using revisor under FC6 and it's proved futile?

I'm going to trust the devs when they say it needs a newer yum.
Does /dev/dvd even exist?

yes. anything pertaining to my dvd drive does not function anymore
except of course in my virtual machine everything is fine like it was yesterday

anyone know what 'separate group for each window' means in keyboard preferences-layout?

maelstrom, 'anymore'. identify what changed.

i don't know...

maelstrom, sounds like your VM might be using it (locked it)

no i have since shut off the vm

i really need some insight and advice.. I cant get my I2O DPT raid v card to work

Check /dev/dvd permissions
(or whatever device that points to)

lrwxrwxrwx
mount /dev/dvd | mount: can't find /dev/scd0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
if that helps

It's a symlink
Check the perms of the device it points to

brw-rw----+

Yeah, and the owner is?

my user

Try a full mount command with the devicename and a mount point

question, I have a hardware raid, and I am running FC6, how do I partition it and set it up?

what raid card are you using?
Esotericisms what raid card are you using?

nvidia mediashield, onboard raid controller

hmm
have you configured that raid in the bios?
you may be able to run raidtools or mdadmin (not sure on mdadmin)

Esotericisms, that's called fakeraid, not real h/w raid. set it up in the bios, then it looks just like one big drive to the installer if supported (dmraid)

looks like cdroms work fine but not dvds...wtf?

Esotericisms, or, disable the fakeraid and use software raid across the individual drives instead.

zcat, its a hardware raid controller how is it fake?

thats what I think Im going to have to do it..
take the raid card out and put in a standard scsi

"Onboard" and "hardware RAID" almost never belong together.

but this is a nice ass card.. 4 channels but its old.. just RH6 drivers on the adaptec site

why would i be able to mount a cd but not a dvd in my drive ??

I have already setup the raid in bios
I just need to mount and format the drive

need to setup a symlink to /dev/dvd?

Do DVDs show up under Windows / VMWare?

yes, perfectly
and it all worked fine yesterday

I have my DVD mounted as /dev/scd1 on /media/DVD_VIDEO type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=500)

You mean the same DVDs mounted properly yesterday?

yes, i have 2 different dvds that no longer mount and they both worked fine before and both still work in windows

"java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-14.fc7" came with default installation of F7 ?

What exactly does it say when you try to mount a DVD?

it is supposed to automount but nothing happens, at least that i can see

(I hope you've tried them on windows using the same machine)

Yes. What of it?

What happens when you try to manually mount it?

damn
delete it
was thinking was part of "jre-6u1-linux-i586-rpm.bin"

mount /dev/dvd | mount: can't find /dev/scd0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

how do I set the partition type of a drive?

screw it, i don't have time. yay linux

maelstrom, yeah you won't find entries under fstab

Can anyone recommend a mother board for running fedora? I've done lots of Googling and haven't found much. I've tried a Intel 965/975 chipset mobo with an Intel Duo CPU and have given up trying to get it to work. Any recommendations?

random failures. It will install, then it won't boot, missing files, etc. Like filesystem corruption. I think it's mostly related to the SATA implementation. I've been working on this for *weeks*.

show me the line for the new partition as shown from the command `fdisk -l`

ok, stupid question. my kid setup a core5 box. I can vnc into it, but I want to tunnel through ssh. sshd shows conigured and running, port 22 is in iptables, when I ssh to its address from the localhost it works, when I do from anywhere else on the internal or externeal network (network firewall points port 22 to this box as well) I get nothing... What am I forgetting?

Wow. Is this an Intel board or other? I'm running off of an Asus at the moment, but I've had Intel and ABit (all Core2 Duo)

I've tried two different Intel MBs. Can't remember the 965 board. The 976 is a DX975bx2.
s/976/975/

Have you run Memtest x86 on it?

Yes, no errors.

doug8429, how long did you run memtest?

1/2 hour

NotLarry, nc -z 1.2.3.4 22

doug8429, and even if you had it running for 3 days or more ... in my experience it doesent always reveal all errors

You think it's a memory problem?

doug8429, possible.

do you have any other memory for it?

doug8429, heat problem?
doug8429, do you see freezes aswell?

No. But I can get some. No heat problem runs cool. No freezes.

doug8429, do you see random segfaults?

can you run a LiveCD?

Yes, some segfaults, some missing libs *After* I get it installed. Haven't tried a livecd.

give a liveCD a shot and check for stability/useage issues... might be a bad controller.
or a poorly supported one

On two different MBs? What MB would you recommend. I've had enough of this new Intel MB stuff. :-(

true... lemme get the exact model of mine ... running Cent5 on it now, but also had FC6 & 7 on it n/p

They've been awesome in the past. Only since SATA support have things gone south.

doug8429, any. though I'd go with tyan for nice server MBs

i'm on an ABit AB9 Pro right now

What about sata bios setup. The intel mbs have 20 options.
How about Asus?

how do I figure out which is my raid device?

doug8429, reset bios to factory defaults, or if it has one, load a 'conservative' setup.

2/exit

Tried that, but I'll try again.

i used an Asus P5W DH Deluxe

I think the reason the new intel driver doesn't work with my laptop is that my monitor isn't giving any ID info, is there some utility to check the monitor ID?

What CPU?

Core2 Duo 6400 (ish)

AMD?

I've got a lot running on AMD's.
my home "server" in on a Asus board

anyone know how I can figure out what my RAID device is? I can't find it

I only used AMD a few years ago, then quality got bad. Switched to Intel, now MBs are bad. :-(

heh. AMD's are cheap cheap cheap hosting now

Hardware or software raid?

it is Onboard Nvidia Raid
I say hardware

"Onboard" and "hardware RAID" almost never belong together.

um /dev/rd0 i think

that's "FRAID" (Fake RAID)

I'd be willing to go AMD if I could find a decent MB.

no rd0

onboard video or no?

one is a kernel bug; the second is python not getting installed, so that yum doesn't work

dmesg detects the sata dives
drives*

(after a fresh, new install on my lappy)

Doesn't matter. It's headless.

any ideas on how to find it?

Is you system running?

what does "fdisk -l" tell you?
Asus M2NBP-VM is a nice cheaper board. I wouldn't use it for a server, but it's good for a workstation.

LiNeTuX, it shows me hda, sda, sdb ... the last two being my separate sata drives
doug8429, is my system running? of course ...

Hey guess what! If it shows them separately...

ifyou're expecting them to be a single RAID device, either your FRAID isn't setup right or the kernel isn't recognizing it. Either way, you should use Linux software RAID

Had to ask. Why do you want to find it?

they should be a single raid

Talk to the RAID controller manufacturer.

I'd suggest using linux web hosting to handle your software RAID function.

So, what's a good Asus server board (in your opinion)

We told you, you refuse to listen. Therefore, they can tell you themselves.

Tyan

http://pastebin.ca/568357 --- kernel "BUG:" I've seen a couple of times now, fresh install on a LinuxCertified(.com) laptop... will see if a "yum update" will fix it

vallor, yum update.

can you explain why it is "fake raid"?

Because it depends on the driver tricking the OS.

Tyan huh? I had one years ago, not very reliable. I assume they've gotten better? What CPU with this board?

thanks, I shall (which brings me to bug #2...python didn't get installed! ...fixing...)

CPU's - either Opteron or Xeon depending on your budget and needs

vallor, python has to be installed for a lot of stuff to work

Have SATA drives running sw raid OK?

what are you planning to do with this box?

Home server

like I said, I use Asus for my home server. You can go with Tyan, but it might be overkill for hom.
erm, home

I've currently got an Intel MB with a 1.5Ghx P4 and SCSI drives. Too slow and noisy.

the new ones are so cool and queit

you going to do any VMWare stuff w/it?

Nope. Just a dev server hosting mainly. Also my mp3 server. ;-)

is there a way to empty trash via terminal?

Shankysv87, yes

then i'd just go with something like an Asus & AMD X2 ...

do you care to share that command with me?

cd ~/.Trash/; rm -rf *

thanks

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

n/p
good luck

Thanks!

ok I read through my dmesg again and I found that /dev/md0 is my raid, though when I do a fdisk on it it says it can't be read

you can't see /dev/md0 via fdisk. cat /proc/mdstats i suppose

Esotericisms, mdX is software raid, and you don't normally partition those devices

/dev/md0 is software raid.

openbysource, that worked great thanks for the command

no problem

ok so how do I set it up?

Esotericisms, how did you created it ?

hi all

i give up.. really! I got this nice card and I cant use it. everything points to it using a 2.2 kernel gah!!! Why do things have to go obselete.

2.2 kernel ? o_O

yup

I think I2O is now in the kernel.

wth are you trying to do ?

really?
then how do you load it?
modprobe iso

i2o has been in kernel for since XX century afaik -_-

i2o

it's loaded when something requires it.

i have a i2o card installed and no raid
it does not see the scsi stuff at all

have you look at your lsmod output already ?

no
duh

why havent you started with that ?

If I am dealing with large files 2+ gb what filesystem do you all recommend?

ext3.

really? why not jfs, xfs ? or large files?

I started with kinfocenter and it sees the card. if I plug a standard scsi card in the drives automatically show up, they didnt with this card.

because ext3 is robust, stable, and fast.
and fedora default.

it's as though "nautilus isn't started at login..

Anvil im at the offending machine now.
the i2o stuff was in lsmod
but nothing is attached to the scsi according to kinfocenter
when i run mdadm -a /dev/md0 it says /dev/md0 not in config file

it has nothing to do with hardware raid

ah duh

I'm using "Modem" settings and have custom graphics using "0 quality jpegs".

Sounds about right...
isn't it working for you?

Oh yes, it works well. I loves me some freenx. I just wondered if there was anything else I could do. I usually see a ~5Kb stream while using and wondered if that could be made even smaller.

you have enabled compression? (though that isn't going to do much for you at those rates and nothing if you use SSH)
Other than that you can try to increase the cache, but I doubt that is your issue.

I use ssh, and have not disabled the compression.
Yeah, cache is maxed out. I think 5Kb is really good, just wondered if it could be improved.

I don't know that you can do much more...

Cool, thanks

anyone know how to pass ssh a password so you don't have to use stdin?

I suppose I should try the updates-testing version first though.

like `ssh user@host $password`

That uses stdin.

echo "password" | ssh x@x.com

Pseudo-terminal will not be allocated because stdin is not a terminal.

"undocumented" feature

I'll do that as soon as the rest of these updates finish

A little - at least the keys have to validate. As I said, I have never actually used it

interesting
secure

well I do have an ssh-key disribution script.
just have to find out where I put it

Lumberg, maybe there's some SSH PM modules for perl that'd let you programmatically handle it

The public key goes in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
On the target machine, that is.

Lumberg, newer versions of ssh come with ssh-copy-id

does anyone have a geforce 4 card working in fedora 6?

yeah, authorized_keys...
I'm just being lazy here

~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Err...

~/.ssh/authorized_keys"

and from my old script:

~/.ssh/authorized_keys ; chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys"

True, you'll have to create the dir if it doesn't exist.

JPC1976, fedora drivers?
nv?

zcat, ivazquez thanks

any easy way to downgrade a package with yum?

You need to install a plugin for that.
yum list yum-\*

ahhh, ok

what do i need to do to copy some text marked in firefox into nano in a ssh session on another server?
select and middle click fails, ctrl-c and shift-ins fails, right click and select "copy" and then either middle click or shift-ins fails..
i get the impression copy/paste in general is hairy business on linux
each desktopmanager or subsystem seems to have its own buffer

in bind, if I modify an A record, do I have to restart anything for it to take effect?

What terminal are you using?

torbjorn, both buffers just work for me. using konsole.

id you advance the serial?

advance the serial?

you do have to reload the zone

Oh man...

turns out the selection contains characters from another charset

You need to advance the serial or you will confuse downstream DNS server.
*servers

gedit wont save it as latin-1
how can i find out what character this is?

it won't confuse it, it will ignore it.

Okay, it will confuse the users...

can you recommend a good tutorial on how to do it? I havn't had much luck looking on line.

had to do it line by line, but found it. thanks.

I learned it from an old book, ISBN 0-672-30584-4.
Chapter 10, "Setting Up the Domain Name System".
And I quote... "The serial number must be incremented every time the file containing this resource record is modified."

the NAG has it and i'm sure there are RH docs online showing how to do it
tldp.org has that too

hmm. the vim changelog plugin is busted?

Using the perl-RPM2 package when grabbing the changelog using $hdr-changelog() it seems to not grab the last changelog.
Has any one else experienced this?

woot. /me kisses his irc logs. fixed:
8 jamessan alley_cat: yeah, I've submitted a patch to the maintainer. line 134 in ftplugin/changelog.vim should be "let g:changelog_date_end_entry_search..." not "let

Siulomas darbas Vadybibinkui :-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
oh sorry
Lithuanian

whoa
so, JPC1976, shoot

hey anyone here
hello
i am using fedora core 5
with yum and it gives the error could not find valid baseurl for repo:core
???

fedora core 5 is dead

cd /etc/yum.repos.d/

use fedora 7

fc5 should still have repos

but listen man in the mirror list the target specified does exist
i am talking about fedora-core.repo the default repo

yeah, remove the repo mirror list and enable a single repo

ok ill try

uncomment this line
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/

thanks it works

np

what was the prob anyway
with the mirrorlist

the mirror list just wasn't available for whatever reason
no idea
I've had it happen too
probably the mirror list is only working for more recent releases

and one more thing how do i give my local repo more priority than the others
even though my local repo contains outdated rpms

why not update the local repo then?
and just use that

well my bandwidth is a bit too low
64 kilobits per sec

just update it at night

disable the other repos and only keep the local one enabled

once a week

That's what rsync --fuzzy is for.

--fuzzy? what's it do?

but my local repo can't solve all dependencies
what fuzzy

rsync --fuzzy

what's that for

Syncing files.

as in

As in your local repo with the official one.

wait suppose we have a pack in my local repo and the rpm i want to install can manage with the rpm in local repo but still it goes to download the updated one

You might be able to use the yum-priorities plugin, but no guarantees.

i dont want it to do that i dont mind having outdated stuff as long as it works
but yum priorities works with yum3.0 only mines 2.6
and its not possible to update

It'd better be possible soon...
Notice the lack of mention of "Fedora Core 5" in the topic...

hey and yum gives the error metadata file does not match checksum

yum clean metadata

ok lemme see now
and you know any ide for c++ in linux
by any chance

anjuta

i don't like the name
and about that find command how to use -exec to exec commands
as in can you put the commands in ' '
anyone can help me out with the find command

#bash

ok thanks

I'm having trouble with a net install, I can't find the correct directories, it's looking for stage2.img

listen debug

o.o what?

mount cd1 somewhere
make that accessible in your ftp

i don't *have* cd1, that's why i'm using the net install!

where r u installing from

NET install, so, ftp or http mirror

gimme the mirror

[dEbug]: You need to point to the dir that has Fedora/, images/, and repodata/ off it.

thanks, ivazquez

i was trying to say that

Note that Everything/ is *not* a valid install source.

and ivazquez do you know the yum parameters for mozilla java plugin

does anyone have with compaq dl360 servers?
I have a remote management controller card which I think is keeping me from starting X, just worried about removing it especially after install.

ivazquez, thanks I've got mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/releases/7/ it's my first fedora install

I don't think gcj's plugin is in Fedora for security reasons.

noo that mozilla java plugin to view applets and stuff

crap
its not working, looking for disc1/images/stage2.img

so give it upto disc1

It should try for both.

mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/releases/7/disc1

I have a driver I need to compile into my kernel, I have done it a couple times before but it has been so long I have forgotten how .. can anyone point me to some documentation on how to do it?

http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source
It's not for Fedora, but it still works.

meh i'm still on the wrong one

ivazquez, thanks

has anyone an idea of ltsp 5.0 compliance on f7?

debug
your basearch is i386 right

[dEbug]: /fedora/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/

thats right

thanks ivazquez, i'm really making this confusing XD

ivazquez, it can't find my kernel source (yum cannot)
it says nothing to do

"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed" (or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask directly: rpm -q package).

lol

Did you read that page?

rpm -q kernel-smp-devel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6 says it is not installed ... working my way throught it right now ivazquez

Fedora doesn't have a separate SMP i686 kernel.

just right rpm -q kernel -smp-devel
just right rpm -q kernel-smp-devel

ivazquez, that page you gave me only talks about whether or not I need the source ... not on how to compile the driver into the kernel ...
I am on x86_64

Where did you get the driver source from?

I have had it for years ... custom ati_remote.c for usb rf receiver
well just a couple years

Did it come with a Makefile for 2.6? Or does it get squeezed into the kernel code?

well the last time I did it I compiled it as a module to the kernel and not into the kernel (if I remember correctly)

So then does it have a Makefile?

no
let me double check

i wish there was like some kind of progress meter on the netinstall :|

actually I take that back ivazquez, it does have a Makefile

hello all

Then install kernel-devel.

ivazquez, it has a really simple Makefile
ok then?

Then run make.

it errors out immediately ...

by default, does fedora make a swap partition?

yes

ivazquez, http://pastebin.com/929700

****

I think I've heard of a fix for that, but I haven't seen it myself. Hang on...

has anyone else had problems with enigmail not prompting for a passphrase when thunderbird isn't run as root?

anaconda shutdown when i wasn't watching :|

livinded, yes. unset GPG_AGENT_INFO && thunderbird &

thanks

touch /usr/src/kernels/$(uname -r)-$(uname -m)/include/linux/config.h

ok ... trying

zcat still not working

nope that didn't fix it

livinded, dunno then. WFM

ivazquez, didn't work

here is the output to the console http://rafb.net/p/2xAo8055.html

Put up the new error output and Makefile.

ivazquez, http://pastebin.com/929708

At this point it's bugs in the code itself.

damn

I recommend looking in the header for whoever wrote it and asking them.

must be the new kernel or the 64 kernel vs the i686

I'd offer to test it, but I'm already on F7.

seems like f7 came out awful soon after f6

F8 will be even shorter.

4.5months and counting...

thats fine .. you can test
http://www.phaze.org/mythtv/ati_remote.c
ivazquez, there is the link to the source

How is that different from the ati_remote and ati_remote2 modules already in the kernel?

good question, I am not sure, I do know that that ait_remote.c has code for a different remote that has different key mappings

uh oh

I'm going to recommend you try those drivers unless you have a problem with them.

I think Anaconda is crashing on the "Retrieving installation information" part

are they already compiled?

Yes.
At least, they are on i686.

how do I use them?

Plugging in the receiver should load the right one.

hrm nope nothing ..
ivazquez, nope, besides my remote has a different mapping then ati remotes
so I need to use the custom one

The custom one won't work, so I recommend you talk to the author of the stock driver.

hrm ok

anyone having problems with nvidia drivers?

video ?

i cant start X server
black screeen appears

what gpu?

geforce4 420

it won't work

Simonko19, what driver?

the board's too old

thats why i ve installed kmod-nvidia-96xx
and xorg-dvi-nvidia-6xx
*9

i tried that on my 440 and didn't work

what happened?

blank screen

same as me

yep

i found in a forum
you have add a line in modprobe.conf
i did.. and now i get a black screen instead of the white one

)

but they say that those boards are supported it has to work..

i know
in the end, i got my self a nx 6200 and a new system
*myself

well i wont trough away a pc

well, don't

because of that..it has to work..

use it for something that doesn't require 3d
server/media center/.......

i want beryl to work
and play games i need hardware acceleration

i want Catherine Zeta Jones
so what?

but why should they say its supported when its not?

that i dunno

there are even lecacy driver
for even older boards

i know, and they don't work

why do u know?

noob question - are a module and a driver the same thing?

'cause I tried
JPC1976, what do you think?

jeff is there any other chance to get beryl to work
and have hardware acceleration?

Beryl is no more, they merged with Compiz... what Graphics card?

well, livna drivers won't work either

lunatik, are you sure? I thought they decided not to

kernel modules are separate files you can load into the kernel. drivers are often modules, but they also can be compiled in.

oh ho, looks like they are.

are there no other drivers for nvidia cards?

Where did you read that?

ok

lunatik, forums, but it appears that the information is unclear.
"Beryl and Compiz (at least the plugins part of compiz) are now merging"

Beryl is a fork of Compiz. Compiz is the one, if either, that is no longer being worked on.

there is the 'nv' driver... also the nouveax or whatever... if neither of those work, you won't get AIGLX working... you can try Xgl, but that's not supported in any way shape or form on Fedora

nv works

Uhh, except you're wrong.

but it has no hardware acceleration has it?

It should... check with the DRI project for what Nvidia cards are well supported.

it has none

They decided to re-merge... because what they were doing was too similar... Beryl is now Compiz Community Plugins or something...

Didn't catch that one. You're right, but it's "OpenCompositing"

Is Fedora likely to work with an Atheros-based 802.11g PCI card?

Use tab completion... you too ferrum... just 'lu[tab]' and I actually notice you talking to me.

I use pidgin, which doesn't support auto-completion.
oh hey it does
disregard that o_O

Yes, but install madwifi from livna.
Should've asked me :P

Okay, I don't know what livna is, but I've heard of madwifi

damn tab key is broken on this keyboard...grrr.

rpm.livna.org has instructions about adding it.

thanks lunitik

http://fedoramobile.org/fc-wireless/madwifi-yum-livna

Use an onscreen keyboard then... it's seriously annoying.

lunitik, ay ay captain

Try XChat, it's a real IRC client
Thank you.

That's "Aye" ;-)
(or "Ei" if you're Welsh)

lunitik, I'm already using pidgin for every other protocol :/

lunitik, unless your 'e' key is on the fritz too

bGetting my username mixed up with "lunatic' is not cool... my name relates to a rap CD title.../b

ivazquez, got it compiled
how do I install it?

make install

no install in the make file

Luniz - Lunitik Muzik ...

Copy to .ko to /lib/modules/.../extras.
Copy the, rather.

done .. now what?

makedep -a

makedep -a not found

hello RexMundi

Esotericisms, tab it out

hi ball

Does Fedora support DVD-RAM?

okay! that "kernel BUG:" problem I had earlier seems to be cleared up, as well as my other problems -- amazing what a "yum update" can accomplish

ball, yes

done
ivazquez, done, next?

ext3 on DVD-RAM?

vallor, buggiest kernel i can remember

oh
file /sbin/mkinitrd from install of mkinitrd-6.0.9-7.1 conflicts with file from package mkinitrd-5.1.19-1

hello mdolan

hello yum being buggy
X(

in fedora. running service network restart clobbers my routing table. how do i get around this?

hello

ball, DVD-RAM is UDF I believe

yep

Is that because of the need for 2048-byte sectors?

everytime i run it, it puts me back to default gateway on eth3, not eth1

How limited is UDF?

ball, Can't remember now... something about packet writing format

I don't want packet writing though, I want random-access

ball, UDF is the only way you can write to a lot of removable media

hello qanxi

ivazquez, sorry for some many questions, I do appreciate it ... whats next after the makedepend?

ball, You *might* be able to use HFS (Mac) format.

Esotericisms, er, makedep. now you can just modprobe it

that won't work for me because it's case-insensitive

question, what if the driver i just compiled is the same as another driver already compiled, how can I make sure it loads the right one?

hfs+ isnt case insensitive. but it can be
you have the option when formatting

thanks for the clarification. I've never seen it used the other way.

it can also be journaled, or not journaled. im a fan

Esotericisms, depmod -a

that doesn't tell me which driver was loaded

Esotericisms, no, use depmod -a instead of makedep
then modprobe it

That's right, my bad.

ok
just second
how do I make it load each time ... add an entry to my /etc/modprobe.conf correct?

udev and/or the kernel should handle loading it.

just cause it is in the extra folder?
or because I am suppose to modify something?

No, the kernel can know about it since depmod has been run.

ah cool, thanks
now to see if the remote is working

Does Fedora support hfs+ "out of the box", or is that something that I have to add to the kernel?

It does, but not the log.

out of the box

It will disable writing if the volume has a log.

Great, thanks

but no writing on a journaled hfs+ fs

Okay, I'll not enable journalling then

but you can easily dis.... ah ok

I'll try burning some discs tomorrow morning when I get home from work.
bI'll try burning some discs tomorrow morning when I get home from work./b

I am gonna reboot see if I can get this remote working

...and have a crack at installing if I get time.
Thanks for your help chaps.

on a mac ?

No, not on a Mac

k
gl

I'm told I need hfs+ for DVD-RAM
(or perhaps UDF, but I know nothing about that)

ISO9660 works fine.

don't know anything about that

ISO9660 is too limited
hello davidfetter

hi, ball, all

Oh, does Fedora support FireWire?

sure

Okay. Sounds promising.
Thanks

hi

hello kivio

It has since FC1.

Okay, I'm off to work.

Although the stack has changed a bit in F7.

i downloaded the x86_64 dvd image, but i don't have a dvd burner

lol

is it possible to install fedora with qemu?

you can install it trough ftp
have u a second pc at home
?

there are a number of possibilities

you need a lan with ftp server

fork of child failed: Cannot allocate memory" -- 3rd piece of hardware i've gotten this error on using f7

1. using existing installation: grub + iso

has anybody other than me seen this?

2. network install / hd install

3. qemu..?

do you have a usb-stick + usb-boot support in the bios?

my usb stick is only 128mb, but my external usb disk should work
but never tried booting from it

The USB install image is only 12MB.

you can use both
usbstick to boot, exthd to put iso on

and then select the iso from the disk during install?

yes

hm ok
and what about qemu, would that work too?
i'm just curious

i don't know about the qemu way, isn't that virtualization?

yep

Installing in a VM and using it outside isn't recommended.

you want to really physically install it?

yes

i would recommend the recommended way

ok I typo'd my fstab, how do I fix it .. I am in recovery mode

nano /mnt/sysimage/etc/fstab

in case my usb stick / mainboard is not bootable: can i use the minimal boot cd and select the iso from the external usb disk?

Yes.

sure

ok

anyway, usb booting should be possible, unless it's a 5+ year old pc

guys do any of you know a good howto for raid1 of / all i'm finding are old ones, currently using FC6

your usb-stick itself doenst need any support for booting

there is no /mnt/sysimage

what do you mean with recovery mode?
recovery cd?

Did you tell the rescue disc to mount the system?

or did you fell back to a prompt after booting?

fall

(regular booting)

I am sorry wrong terminology, filesystem repair cause it couldn't find the fstab entry correctly

ok
mount -o remount /
vim {or} nano /etc/fstab

ok thx for your help

how do you gents handle passwordless ssh logins, carry the key on a USB drive?

select iso from usb disk method

the boot image is on the dvd

thanks I will give it a try

in case you still have to create the usb-disk: create a FAT12 partition on it, make it bootable, and dd the image to it

you mean fat16?

because the image doesn't contain a partiontable,
well, err, FAT12 works, maybe FAT16 will also work

ok will try

bootdisk.img is a small VFAT image you can put on the stick.

yeah, that's the one ivazquez , tnx

yep, i just got that one

StevenOdb, isnt it device then mount point?

not with a remount

no on fixing the fstab sorry

just the mount point is enough
the mount command is just to remount your root was read-write, because it was probably mount RO
what line did you break, and how'd you fix it?

StevenOdb, yes I got that ... referring to fixing my fstab

ow sorry
it's device, then mount point yer
yeah
maybe type the broken line inhere

anyone here have a fedora server up ?

i have
why?

Simonko19, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null

w

So is it just different now, or actually randomized?

what kind of server are you running ?

why what do you need to know?

The computer type of server.

ivazquez, just different. there was a perfect storm of peepee complaints a couple weeks ago.

im need/wanting to set up a domain controller and exchagnish server
and a file server and print server
ive looked at several distros but ot found one that i really like
ive looked at several distros but ot found one that i really like

file server

You don't want Fedora for that then.

i see

samba?

Try CentOS.

ill look into that
man i just wish that there was a free alt to exhange

OpenGroupware?

scalix and a few others cost $$$
woot
i didnt know of that one

Faust-C, zimbra

is it possible for the same driver to get loaded multiple times?

that one isnt free is it ?
ive looked into that one or maybe my dumbass cant read fully

has anybody else seen failures to malloc on boot?
fork of child failed: Cannot allocate memory" -- 3rd piece of hardware i've gotten this error on using f7

ivazquez, is it possible to have a driver loaded multiple times

greetings
i have problem upgrading from FC6 to Fedora 7

ivazquez, I think I have drivers conflicting

when i choose 'upgrade existing system' , i got error about /boot and /etc/fstab should be label as devices name etc etc , something like that..anyone can help me ?

Esotericisms, which modules are conflicting?

I think I have the kernel ati_remote and a custom ati_remote driver conflicting

anisfarhana, in F7 all PATA devices become /dev/sda* so you want to change your fstab at least if it isn't using LVM or some other method of specification for devices.

i don't get you sir
u mean from /dev/hda* to /dev/sda* ?

anisfarhana, if your fstab has /boot set as hda1 you need to change it to sda1 for example.

Anyone know if it is possible to share my SMB shares through SSH? I don't know how to view them...

anisfarhana, likewise, if your grub.conf has any root=/dev/hda2 or similar entry, you need to change it also.

what do you want to do?
Aeon?

/dev/hdb1 /boot ext3 defaults , change to /dev/sdb1 ?

I want people to be able to log into my linux machine through SSH, and then have the linux machine share the files on my windows machine to the people connecting

anisfarhana, yeah.

how can I remove a driver that came with the kernel

how about other devices ?

ah
you have to mount

anisfarhana, which other devices?

Esotericisms, have you even tested the one built yet?

with -ctfs

Mount the smb:// directory?

i have other devices from winXP's hdd

the windos share

which i auto-mount it in FC6

well based on /var/log/messages, it looks like I might have to drivers competing for attention

yes i mean. you want linux user to see a windows share right?

anisfarhana, yeah, all PATA/EIDE devices.

yes

ok so
edit
fstab

ah ... just to install umbrello , had to pull all kdevelop dependencies T_T

can i paste my current /etc/fstab to you , then change it , then paste new one to you ?

or simply
mount the share with -ctfs

Esotericisms, what was the new module?

anisfarhana, sure.

Thanks a lot

thx in advance

a customized ati_remote driver

Esotericisms, modprobe -l \*ati_remote\*

-cifs surely?

I have two

http://rafb.net/p/liiDUJ64.html , my current /etc/fstab
im going to change it now

zcat, it returns two files

Esotericisms, is one of them yours?

yes

http://rafb.net/p/LxsYh940.html , this is new one

Esotericisms, temporarily rename the old one to something else.
Esotericisms, lsmod|grep remote ; rmmod oldmodules ; modprobe newmodule

anisfarhana, yeah, that should work.

lunitik what do you mean?

can you guide me too for /etc/grub.conf ?

how do I disable the firewall rules so everything is open from the commanline

well apparently the remote not working isn't a driver issue

anisfarhana, post it.

rico tryo

Esotericisms, i coulda told you that. I have the same remote.

Ricoshady, "service iptables stop"

http://rafb.net/p/tjWkKl71.html , this is my current grub.conf , and right now i have no idea what should i change

will that allow all traffic in and out of the system?

Ricoshady, yep

yes
you better run

heh

system-config-securitylevel

i went through a bunch of contortions trying to the IR ati remotewonder II working last summer. couldn't get ALL the keys working right.

anisfarhana, you shouldn't need to change anything in there.

What is 'ctfs'?

so no change for my grub.conf ?

anybody have suggestions for a good UML editor besides umbrello?? ..

lunitik i dont know.. but i remember mounting smb filesystem with it

well this driver is taylored specificly to the niveus remote, which is a variation of the ati remote

No you don't.
You recall using CIFS

zcat, the system is receiving the signals from the remote just not translating them properly from what I can tell

and lunitik: I thought those command line options looked a bit odd

"Common Internet File System"... what smb is currently called.

anisfarhana, right. It isn
't using absolute device names.

lunitik it was ctfs
i ve installed a samba server 1 month ago

Stop arguing, you're wrong.

i drunk much in the meantime but i can remember

ok thanks for your help, im going to use Moonshine after this

hey guys, it's me again

lunitik think what u want i dont care ))

it didn't work out

ok... just stop misleading people.

i could boot from the usb stick, but the installer couldn't find the live dvd iso on the disk

Actually guys I think I've found a solution... "man mount.cifs"

It's actually cifs, not ctfs.

any way to boot the live dvd directly from grub?

It used to be smbfs I am pretty sure.

ok

smbfs is slightly different to cifs, but they are compatible....

ctfs = "Capture The Flag Strike" in UT

Ok.

i really never typed cifs

lunitik, Everyone was a n00b at some point in their life.

aeon can you try to mount with -ctfs too? just too see the output

True, most didn't act they they were knowledgeable though....
mount -t cifs is what you're remembering.

is there any way to boot the live dvd (x86_64) from disk?

lunitik, Damn kids!

I don't think there is a -c and -t needs a filesystem after it

is there a volume control or something that will display mic inputs so I know what cable I'm plugging in as a test of some sort
because I can't figure out which on it is

AeonIntention:

aeon do you have any windows share running?

Yes

have you tried with -t cifs?

I'm still readin up on that before I try it but it is equivelet to "mount.cifs" so I believe it is what I should be using.

yes just try

Yes, it's a wrapper.
mount.cifs is a wrapper for mount -t cifs ....

what's the diff between a 'wrapper' and a sym link?

Does any one know what channel the rhythmbox dev's hang out in?

wrapper = multiple parts of a command vs sym = direct link?

One is a binary wrapper, the other is a harddisk pointer.

hello, how can i set ownership/permission for audio devices? i edited udev.rules, but it didn't help

gotcha

chown

shramanad, what did you edit specifically?

added group 'audio' and in udev.rules added GROUP="audio" for audio devs

shramanad, there is already a audio devices group.

can an alsa devie be shared between 2 x session (2 diff users?)

if fedora is seeing the signals from my remote but the buttons it is tied to isn't working what is the next step

shramanad, take a look around line 78 of /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules

autopsy, it reads now 'KERNEL="dsp*", MODE="0660", GROUP="audio"
but /dev/dsp is me:root

dsp is the oss device not alsa

the same is for /dev/snd/*
and the mode is 0600

try 777 what could possibly go wrong

yes, i run chown && chmod script for now, but i wonder why udev.rules didn't work

did ati release new vid drivers yet?

no

/etc/sysconfig/static-routes doesnt seem to work in fedora. does anyone know what to use to define static routes?

use the command route add

that wont stick after a networking restart
and route is deprecated in favor of iproute2
oddly enough. static-routes DOES work if i update the syntax in the file to "any: net....", but adding a default gateway here doesnt match the expected behavior
if i add a static route to the default gw, it is added to the routing table on a network restart, but the incorrect default line is also added.... hmm
argh. wtf does RH feel the need to duplicate all this stuff in /etc/sysconfig

greenfish put it somewhere else in a script
at start time

then what do i do if another tech comes by and runs a networking restart.

only root can do that?
are there more roots?

yes

greenfish, edit the script that handles network restarting?

can you add it to

greenfish, grep static-routes /etc/sysconfig/net*scripts shows that it's only looking for -ipv6

the script which starts network?

greenfish, the s-c-network util can add static routes

heres the thing. ive got static-routes working. so im left with "default via 192.168.1.9 dev eth1", but after a networking restart i also have "default via 192.168.1.9 dev eth3" in the routing table
eth1 is a 20meg fiber line, and eth3 is a tennsy little dsl line
at any given time only one should be the default route

cant you just turn off one of this lines?

im sure i could hack the redhat scripts to make this work, but that leaves me in a dangerous position, as many of those files are updated during a yum update

true

i can get it working by hand no problem
its a simple routing table

Whenever I try to log into gnome, I only get my wallpaper and the cursor. What can I do about this?

DEFROUTE=no is added to all ifcfg-ethX scripts also. which makes the appearance of eth3 as a default route even stranger

onexused
try
killall -u yourusername
and try again

be back soon

bleh. ill find it. im sure its something dumb
redhat's insistence on duplicating conf files in sysconfig drives me crazy though

Can anyone tell me how to turn this command line into a line in /etc/fstab:
sudo mount -t cifs //Bob/Apps /mnt/Apps -o user=john,passsword=blahblah

why use /etc/sysconfig/network to define the hostname, when linux already has /etc/hostname!

AeonIntention, consider using automounter

LiNeTuX is that the same as the automount command?

love in an ella-vay-tah

greenfish, no /etc/hostname. the hostname util uses /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network

AeonIntention, automounter automatically mounts a fs for you when you browse it

yeah. thats what i meant. /etc/hosts

opsec, zoom in; snapshot; upload

but adding the hostname there won't work. it HAS to be in sysconfig/network

greenfish, trace through it all and it makes more sense. start with /etc/init.d/network

hehe. i understand the way it works. i just don't understand the decision to further abstract common linux conf files

sysconfig is used by system-config-* tools
more or less.

ferrum, as well as almost all initscripts.

yup

onexused does it work?

zodiac, presto chango

should I use FreeBSD,CentOS,or Debian for a fileserver?

with a bunch of symbols after it. I had to use the computer's power button to reboot it; I couldn't get to another terminal (alt+F1 wrote more symbols). After rebooting Fedora, it froze on a black screen after *almost* starting gdm. I'm in dual-boot Slackwar

which ever you feel more comfortable with

I've never used any, but learning a new system isn't an issue. Just pick a random one

what's new in ext3 filesystem from centos 4 to 5 ?

use debian

debian it is.

Sorry, not used to this IRC client

it will have good FS support and teach you the apt package tool

after accidental power down, on next start up it didn't show any error message and didn't prompt for disk checking !!!

can anyone tell me why my x window starts with a blank screen after installing kmod-nvidia96xx?

Zaki, thank the journal

Simonko19, Do you have any other ideas?

didnt it work?

Didn't you read what I said?

no

Give me a bit to type it again.
