Hey All I have just made the jump from Linux to windows and no longer have windows running @ all I have most of

at least thats how I see it
there's an old saying, Give me freedom or give me death.

I have enough faith in Fedora that it's doing the right thing, even if Red Hat may not be.

Does anyone remember back when Apple was the bad guy, they had an anti-trust lawsuit of their own way before microsoft became a household name.

ivazquez, I hope so...
Bob-Laptop, can't say that I do... I'm younger 30's and didn't get into computers until I was like 23 cause my parents wouldn't buy the books and stuff for me too learn... but that is another story...

Face the Facts we wouldnot have the hardware we do today if it was not for Microsoft

Bob-Laptop, True - they've forced hardware manufacturers to produce higher end stuff each year - but then again, so has the server industry - of which some of that technology filters down to the home user...

the DOJ and Microsoft is not about computers, it is about business

Bob-Laptop, right and that in a way concerns me, how they conduct their business, dishonestly a lot of times

Bob-Laptop, As well - on that same note, the IT industry would not be as huge as it is today if it wasn't for Microsoft. Support industry would be "niche" instead of the full blown business host it is today. I personally have to thank Microsoft for making my bread and butter and paying my bills.

no, we'd still have 17 different proprietary os and hardware platforms

I ahve made way to much money over the last 10 years thanks to microsoft for me to HATE them to much, I just choose to no use their products

Having different OS's and different hardware is actually a good thing - so's that innovation is not kept on a narrow track.

YankDownUnder, absolutely competition is a positive driving force

I still hate them but. Even though I make my living off of their OS's. I still hate the fact that they're WILLINGLY "forcing" themselves down the throats of the uneducated.

well thankfully, my living is now pretty much 100% from Linux, rhel, and toying with fedora

I honestly believe that secure linux web hosting - and a revival of BeOS (in Haiku) and a revival in OS/2 and a revival in other "dead" OS's will make for further innovation - in the desktop arena.
Ife, Mate - I've "converted" some folks over - and have converted over the servers I have to take care of - and I'd LOVE to make my entire living from just linux, but, alas, I have to remain realistic about the whole thing. I stand to make more chasing viruses and re-installing Windows than I would by installing linux 24/7. Hate to say it, but I have to be realistic.

is BeOS dead?;o

I can't say I see that one, a revival of os/2

eComStation is the last hold-out.

YankDownUnder, I understand, I think windows is a great gaming machine, and yes in the business world they have a great stranglehold, for now, although booting them out of there would be a great sight to see I hope

Windows is a mediocre gaming machine.
It's just massively popular.

well right now they have the best hosting game imho
games...

But not because it's a great gaming machine.

but because everyone has windows

ya just can't play neverwinter nights 2 on a ps3

I still find that some games run better under linux...but then again, I'm selective in my games (HL, RTCW, Cube)

yes, I do hope that will change as well as Linux comes more ot the mainstream desktop

As my mother used to say "If everyone jumped off a bridge would you?". I shan't be jumping off that bridge. I shan't be running Windows at home FOR myself. My missus does, but only because she does eBay and programs Access/VB databases. I end up fixing that machine WAY too much for my comfort level. That's bad enough. If I can't run linux, I don't want to use a computer.

well my main comp is xp, just cause it was given to me, and because of the games I like to play every so often.. but my other 3 computer run fedora, soon to be a cluster after today when I goto pick up a roomful of computers and computer parts.. damn my electric bill will sky rocket but having a full blown cluster in my basement will just be plain cool... imo
well as my bread and butter comes from rhel and secure linux web hosting and such I can't say I'd be able to immediately jump ship if that deal went through but, to me I think I'd be looking a lot more out that window

Well, nothings written in stone as of right now - so best is to steer a straight course, make as much money as possible, and keep the eye bones open for future opportunties...IMHO...

just on principal
here here!!

Ife, Cluster, eh? What are ya gonna do - process SETI and FOLDING or just disk farm and DVDRIP rendering?

now if I could find out if that hot asian chick at work that is flirting with me is really interested.. I think my life could be fullfilled
now if I could find out if that hot asian chick at work that is flirting with me is really interested.. I think my life could be fullfilled

Women - ya can't live with 'em and ya can't bury 'em in the backyard.

lol
dood she is hot....
but yea the cluster,, I am not sure yet, other than learning as much as I can with the equipmenty

Mate - I wish ya all the luck in the world - but I always think back to when I was on the "scene" - if they're really hot, they're probably an HMB as well.

rabbit-boiler

yes, she is but ya know, I just want to bang her not marry her

Last time I worked on a cluster it was an IBM setup - running Tivoli - running this HUGE monster program for Fritolay/PepsiCo in Plano, Tx. Was great. Was really fun mucking around on it - aside from just doing basic maint.
Ha - yeah - cook tunnel steaks on'em...
I wouldn't mind creating a simple cluster just do to video ripping/encoding...hate using my personal web host workstation for that stuff...

well I configure a simple cluster at work 2 comps with an attached sas, but i am looking to take my cluszter learning to the next level, which i believe will include my web hosting company paying for me to get my rhca, I hope...

Hi, does anyone know of a repository that includes a binary of Freetype with the bytecode interpreter enabled?

Ah yeah - that's always a good thing. More education - more money!

I kjow they will pay for me to get recertified as an rhce

BTW, you can always use the cluster to, say, compile Gnome faster, eh?

ugh gnome...

Dehaene, Er...which ones ya got enabled now?

hi is there any site for fc7 cdcovers?

Ife, Yeah Gnome (Gee, No Me!)

although stress testing the cluster with somethinng like that would probably be sometyhing I'd do just for fun...

posterdati, Er...what might you mean exactly...not sure if I'm catching yer drift...
Ife, Rendering 3d pr0n....

posterdati, they didn';t release cd version of f7.. only dvd...

pics with cdcover

unless that recently changed

so I could print it and put in my cd jewel case

posterdati, Ya might want to look on the Fedora forums - or, I think it's like art.fedora.org

YankDownUnder, Now THAT one I think will be the real goal

Well I'm thinking of migrating to Fedora 7 from Feisty, and as far as I can tell neither Livna nor Freshrpms provide a replacement rpm.

posterdati, What about just taking some of the basic F7 artwork and making something out of that? Wouldn't that be simple enough?

there's only cdlabel

forget the asian delights.. I'll take asian 3d.... in technicolor

Is it possible to get a bash script to ask the user for input, and then use that input as a variable?

Dehaene, There's also deiter - and lxtnow - and probably a few others my braindead head can't remember

Check the wiki. Especially the Fedora Art section.

ok thanks

Ife, BUT, but! The "real thing" is better! She'll spend yer money, destroy your soul and confidence, break your heart - ya can't get that with a 3d girl!

exactly why 3d IS better...
NOT

Ha....really...meanwhile, back at the ranch....

ok no sleeve at all

Nevermind I found it (read var1, echo $var1)

posterdati, What I ended up doing was taking the GDM picture and just mucking with it in GIMP and making one for myself...

Does anyone have a clue what to change in F7 xorg.conf to make an invisible mouse pointer visible?
I sure don't!

I don't use gdm... buahahahah

boogerhead, have you tried running "gnome-mouse-properties" and changing the mouse cursor?

yes

posterdati, Even if you don't run GDM, the artwork/graphics are still on yer system...otherwise you can d/l them from the Fedora wiki

Most of the obvious stuff I have tried. F7 seems to just thrash xorg.conf. All kinds of omissions and such
I like to have never figured out what it was doing to my monitor

boogerhead, Mate, I haven't experienced that as of yet - and that's been after quite a few installations - just in the past few weeks. However, if you're making changes to the graphics drivers, that could cause some stir-ups...
boogerhead, Er...so yer display was mucked up as well?

neither the mouse nor the monitor worked correctly after install. I have finally licked the Monitor, but the mouse still eludes me

boogerhead, Ok...so the place I would begin is this, WHAT is so strange about your monitor and your mouse that it wasn't correctly picked up in the first place...has this happened before? Is this an upgrade or a fresh installation?

It happens with every version of FC I load. I have to start over and figure it out. It is a fresh install, the 7th time I might add. I use a Nokia 445Xpro and a simple Microsoft wheelmouse

boogerhead, Nokia 445Xpro? What's that? A monitor?

21" cad monitor
Very high resolution
listed, but info is omitted on install that is vital to its operation. I have corrected that

boogerhead, Ah. Ok...Well, here's a quick question for ya - do you happen to have a Knoppix LiveCD or any other LiveCD laying about? The reason I ask is because if the LiveCD picks up yer mouse and yer monitor, you can make a copy of the xorg.conf and compare them to the existing one to figure out the best settings...done it before myself here.
boogerhead, It's either that or find a basic xorg.conf (or get one from someone) and once again, do a side by side comparison in order to properly sort out the issue.

I am just stumped by this simple wheelmouse. I have compared, and place a copy from ubuntu into the xorg.conf of F7 to no good result
using same mouse

boogerhead, I'll assume it's a USB mouse, ya?

yipper it is

that is a way of checking to make sure it's working....

boogerhead, Not that I've had any probs with F7, but with a few other distros I've had some issues with the mouse - and that's what I did - I dropped to a console login, installed gpm, restarted the mouse services, then after getting into X had me a mouse...

At least I set the option in mouse properties that shows me where the pointer is when I pres the control key... I will have to check and see if I have installed it this time...

boogerhead, What's yer graphics card?

hello all

Nvidea

boogerhead, Cool - did you install the livna NV kmod or the NVidia driver from NVidia?
Just asking...I didn't have much luck with the NVidia driver from NVidia...had great luck with the livna mod

no, I fixed the omissions in the xorg.conf

boogerhead, Ok...roger that.

gpm is installed

is there an easy way to add a command to run after the system boots in fedora 7?

boogerhead, (as root) /sbin/service gpm restart (or start)

/etc/rc.d/rc.local
moonchos, ^

I just add the commands to that?

gedit and see 4 urself

ok momento

ok thx

Does linux have a command in bash that is equivelent to "PAUSE" in DOS?
So that I can get the "Press any key to continue..."

not really.. you can do echo Press enter and then read temp

Perhaps your questions are better suited for #bash...

AndyCap ok thx

and go read the Advanced bash scripting howto on tldp.org

Actually I'm half way through that one

does fedora come with any tv applications installed, so i can just test my wintv?

tried tvtime?

yum install tvtime kaffeine?

started up, mouse pointer still invisible. I am convinced that I have missed something in xorg.conf

what wintv card?

boogerhead, Er...are you in a console whilst doing this - or in X?

and do you have a /dev/video0 device?

console

boogerhead, Roger that.
boogerhead, Do you want me to put my xorg.conf in the pastebin for you to have a squiz at?

heu anyone here

I m willing, I have no idea how that works

nope only us mice

my yum keeps giving the error package does not match checksum
error no -1

yum clean all and try again

boogerhead, Hang on mate...

but it happens again and again

AndyCap, a usb device, but i installed the drivers and dmesg says it is fine
a wintv usb

that is my xorg.conf

greenberet007, read Sonar_Guy

install tvtime and try then

AndyCap, is there anything without installing?
bad internet connection

check ur dvd

I am still waiting for the data to transfer. It really is slow this morning.

how can i see what version of linux wireless extensions i have? and if it comes with with WPA/WPA2 extensions

boogerhead, Er...you're trying to open the website, right? http://pastebin.ca/569756 ?

I am using firefox to browse and clicked your entry. It is stuck, I will retry
I am way out in the sticks in W/Central Texas with a wireless access that sometimes don't do so hot
got it

boogerhead, Ok. I lived in Texas from 96 to 2000. You NOW have all my sympathies.

how can i see what version of linux wireless extensions i have? and if it comes with with WPA/WPA2 extensions

the only difference between them id you have "auto" as protocol, and I have ImPS/2. I will try that. Thanks

boogerhead, Coolbeans. Hopefully it'll work, eh?

Made absolutely no difference

boogerhead, Ok. That is officially strange.

is there a way i can make rpms from the ones i have installed so i can give them to another machine without that person download?

just for giggles and grins, eh?

Arfdee, hmmm, maybe you're looking after createrepo?

right

boogerhead, And it said nothing about errors or anything like that, right?

right

guzu, but then dont i have to have the files on my machine in .rpm format instead of installed?

Arfdee, yes you have to
Arfdee, sorry

boogerhead, Mate - do you, by chance, have a liveCD - like Knoppix or something like that laying about?

all is well in Robert Lee, Tx... except I have an invisible mouse still
I will find one and try again
this is gonna take a while, so I will go for now. I will let you know how I turn out. Thanks for the help

boogerhead, What I'm trying to get at is that I think that the mode settings for the monitor are causing the problems with the mouse - now don't quote me on that, but it seems quite strange. Something else to think about - and this is far out there - is to get into the BIOS of the machine and check to see if you have the USB legacy keyboard/mouse set to YES - that sometimes makes a difference...

roger
will do

can anyone here please help me with wpa_supplicant

what problems are you having?

It's the little things...

owentl_, wpa_supplicant reports CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to xxxxxx completed (auth) [id=0 id_str=] but i can't ping anything

are you using DHCP? If do do you get an IP? What does an ipconfig of your wireless interface show?

does wpa_supplicant actually configure the ip layer for you, or do you need to run dhclient?

Are you using NetworkManager for configuration of your wireless?

owentl, how can i check?
AndyCap, how can i know?

show for BOOTPROTO

as owentl said, try ifconfig

i have wpa_supplicant running and now I am trying to activate my connection via the network configuration dialog. It says Determining IP....failed

so that sounds like DHCP
what is your wireless interface? that will make typing commands easier

owentl, it says DHCP
owentl, why is my wireless detected as eth1 and not wlan0 can this cause a problem?

have you tried NetworkManager? It makes wireless setup real easy!

no. that's really up to the driver. no problem

it is fine at eth1

ok

ipw shows up at eth1.. iwl shows up at wlan0
it is only the driver like AndyCap said

have you tried using NetworkManager?

i have noticed that the wpa_supplicant windows shows that the it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting
looks like it timesout
AndyCap, is that the same as System-Administration-Network?

nope

no, that is actually neat

are you running gnome?

neat is the name of that

they still call it that? thought that was deprecated in rh7 or so in favor of redhat- and later system-config-network
anyhow.. run pgrep nm-applet does it give you a result?

how to make "add/remove software" work without network access?

maybe it is, but neat still runs

by editing the files in /etc/yum.repos.d/ to point to local copies of the repositories

oops.. that was for AndyCap not zzzoid.. too quick on the autocomplete

AndyCap, 3404

it is owned by the system-config-network package

ok. cool.. now. kill wpa_supplicant
i know.

owentl, do i normally run wpa_supplicant first and then activeate in neat?

AndyCap, can i point to the mounted fedora ISO?

AndyCap, ok

I run NetworkManager

then do as root /etc/init.d/NetworkManager start
you can do that, the dvd has the repodata dir.
but you'll have to disable (temporarily) the updates mirror

NetworkManager will store wep keys in the keyring and all kinds of nice stuff like that

AndyCap, started
owentl, i don't use wep though

What do I do with a .spec file to turn it into .rpm or whatever it becomes?

ok, you should have an icon for it in the top right corner

ok, thanks

rpmbuild -bb specfile
with the proper rpmbuild dir structure and tools installed

AndyCap, ok, i have selected my network and input my password

well, then you should see if it works soon enough.
it will also ask you for a keyring password. this is the password for the wep/wpa key storage area

AndyCap, how will i know
AndyCap, it didn't

I think it asks you for the network pass first, then for the keyring pass

a little pop up says successful, you get a signal indicator instead of the disconnected area
yep, after it gets a good password and connect
and if you hover the mouse over the nm-applet icon it will tell you what it's doing with a tooltip

does you applet look like two grey (or green) lights or is it a signal strength meter?

AndyCap, all that happens is that the icons animation stops and then starts again after 20 seconds. no pop up or anything
owentl, one green. one grey
owentl, wait two green

two green is good
signal meter much better!

owentl, i had a popup saying i was connected, now the icon has changed to two computer monitors

click on the icon again and try to reconenct to your network
I have had this happen before for some random reason, the second time I try to connect it will work???

ok, one green

do you build many RPMs by chance?
reason I ask, I am looking for a tool that will verify a package against the Fedora Packaging guidelines

owentl, no joy

sorry.. that damn autocomplete again!!

owentl, i'm gonna reboot and try again

anything useful in /var/log/messages?
try this too.. ipw3945d --kill;ipw3945d
as root

Interface eth1.IPv6 no longer relevant

can someone please help me installing some software. It came with several directories

ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP) eth1 link is not ready

there is a doc directory with a makefile and makefile.run also

is there a configure script in the main directory?
most of the time a make then make install will take care of subdirs

there is a bin/doc/fonts/icons/include/keys/lib/iconspak

owentl, YES!!!!!!!!!!! - it worked
owentl, so shall I always use networkmanager now, and not bother with wpa_supplicant?

was it the reboot or killing ipw3945d ??
YES

owentl, killing the daemon

what will happen next time you try to connect is that it will ask you for your keyring password

owentl, AndyCap, - THANKS A MILLION!!!!!

this will then automatcially associate you to your AP
any time!

owentl, do i need to set networkmanager in a boot script or something

yea, chkconfig NetworkManager on
that will start it during boot

no, just rpms for private use

owentl, ok will do

rpmlint does some verification and is part of the guidelines, but I don't think it covers all of them

yea I know.. I was hoping to find a tool that helps w/ the rest

bugzilla package reviews. :P

yep, that is what I have been going through.. but it looks like some people ahve some automated tools.. just trying to find them

tell me plz, is the downgrading of Xorg in F7 is the only way to get ATI mobility card working?

can someone look at this for me
http://rafb.net/p/cceXEZ90.html
i'm trying to config my video driver
i finally got 3d direct rendering to work
but for video it is super slow and jittery

heh, maybe there are some private patches to rpmlint.. I dunno

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=156961 - have you read this?

course i read this
thats how i got it working this far
but there is more that needs to be done
thought there might be someone who could help

I'm too.

thanks for helping
there must be something with openGl that i'm missing

I did knew that ATI's not good choice, but in notebooks....

yeah, ati blows ass in linux so far
works very well on my xp
but on fedora, not going so well, but that might just be my own fault
haven't configured it properly yet

CentOS5.0 is makin 1280*800 at least.... from box...

hmm

Can anyone tell me a good tool to use on my XP machine to test the security of my fedora box?
I have nmap for windows

your brain...

Can you be a little more specific?

what is your goal of this excercise? a testing tool only tests for very general things. you're the guy who knows that you have a poorly updated phpbb in /~somuser/phorum/ and that two of your ssh accounts really should have better passwords

It will just reassure me. I believe I've done everything right, and now I want to test it to be sure.

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Security-HOWTO/network-security.html dunno if any of them run on windows

owentl, i just installed the nvidia driver which also updated the kernel. now my ipw3945 doesn't work. do i need to recompile the drivers?

if you built them by yourself, yes

AndyCap, ok thanks
AndyCap, in order to rebuild i'm gonna need the kernel dev package for 3228 do you know where i can get it from
the exact kernel is 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7
i checked on livna but it's not there

I use the ipw stuff from atrpms and the nvidia driver directly from nvidia.. I don't use RPMs for that

owentl, which kernel do you use?

Uh guys, whats up with Gnome in Fedora 7 64 bits ? I don't have WAVE capture, I don't have a lot of sound options . . .

3228
every time I update the kernel I have to re-run the nvidia script to create a new module

Be right bacj
*back

the reason I did this was b/c I was running rawhide for a while and it is quicker w/ updates than other repos

owentl, i have found the ipw package on atrpms that you mentioned. but for future ref where can i get the new kernel sources and are there a set of yum repositories that i should add as standard?

quick lock the door

if you have kernel-devel installed, it will be updated w/ the new kernel

service vsftpd stop

Hi.

hi

I am using a f7 machine to route internet on my LAN... I need to allow Yahoo Voice chat tcp/udp ports 5000,5001... How do I do this using iptables?

read the iptables documentation ?

I am just not able to figure out difference between FORWARD and POSTROUTING and all....
I did...

for easy firewall admin, install firestarter

re read the man iptables...

FORWARD is a filtering chain, POSTROUTING is a nat chain.
as far as you dont modify source nor destination of packets, it's not POSTROUTING

but do I use filters or nat?

FORWARD are packets that are not destinated to the router
(forwarded packets..)

So what do I need to do? just forward packets two ways...

INPUT packets with the router as destination.
OUTPUT the packets that are from the router to something else.

So everytime I access Internet, there is a FORWARD.

How do I check if Ogg Vorbis is install on my Fedora system ?

everytime you access Internet from another PC using your f7 packets as router you fall in the FORWARD chain

okay... and what about the reverse communication internet to my PC on the lan?

Oh crap who forgot to lock the door?

Hey BOby

Search tab, search for Ogg Vorbis

LOL

Boby i need help

what have told you ?

Yeah. .

Morning SAM_theboy

There was no Ogg Vorbis.

chewed-on: type 'ogg' in a terminal (without the '' thingies) and then press tab twice

On KDE I can't play any sounds
moring

Don't use KDE here anymore, sorry

o.. man

I got ogg123, oggdec, oggenc, ogginfo and ogonkify

I see.... Forward is used to forward both ways.... So do I need to specify two rules for two way communications?

doesn't look like I have vorbis. . .

yup, then i think you've got ogg vorbis on. as far as i know the ogg package installs them all together

I have vorbis_tool installed though in my package manager.

chewed-on: use oggdec file_name.ogg to try and play something

Anvil:I see.... Forward is used to forward both ways.... So do I need to specify two rules for two way communications?

I don't have any .ogg files.

chewed-on: no problem. got an audio cd nearby?

No.
:-D
I'm trying to compile Audacity but it says Ogg Vorbis was not found. . .

why compile it?

chewed-on: that might be that it's looking for the headers...

why not just use yum to instal it?

Using the yum installed audacity said it can't play back the recorded sound or something and told me to check the sound output. . .

sorry, not headers..source package
chewed-on: does your sound work?

Yeah.
I'm listening to music right now.
I forgot to tell you guys that I'm using an onboard sound I think.

i'm looking to put a ftp server up, i can access the files from localhost + login info, but i can't via ip address + login info, I have both ports 20 & 21 open to forwarding. When I try to log in via Ip +Log in, it times out.

chewed-on: did you run any other sound app while trying to use audacity?

Not an actual sound card. . .
No, I ran audacity without any other sound applications opened.
^.^!

chewed-on: odd-ish...did you try tinkering with audicity's settings to see if it could do anything? maybe try another input or so?

OK, it's working now.
LOL.
I must've had something opened without noticing it.

probably

I hear buzzing sounds when I record though . ..

brb

chewed-on: do u have desktop speakers near?

chewed-on: do you also hear the sounds that you are inputting, or just the buzzing?

yeah

mic gain usualy makes buzzing

I hear my own voice.

lower the actual volume of the microphone

hell no, I ain't ever turning on mic gain.
That hurted my hear last time I turned it on.
I see.

why do you yell at your monitor or something?

Lower the microphone volume I give that a try.
no it's just that I think the PCM value was higher than 75% so it generated really disturbing high frequency noise.
Squeaks.

so ajust until it doesnt

I don't really need mic boost.

I wish my mic worked
for some strange reason skype doesnt pickup my mic
speaking of. skype released a new version this week
still beta for linux. but it works great

some pc mic's are V-E-R-Y omnidirectional, so it picks up the frequencies that are ambient, speakers play it back, and the lovely little sound we call hellround starts

wicked, you sound like a musician

sound tech

ah, the nerdy version

freelance sound in television industry and i do gig's etc (fashion shows and the like)
hellround on pc speakers might hurt some peoples ears, but the bigger version on a 2400KW (RMS watts) sound system hurts a whole lot more
s/2400KW/2400W

what the command to identify mimetype from terminal?

i'm looking to put a ftp server up, i can access the files from localhost + login info, but i can't via ip address + login info, I have both ports 20 & 21 open to forwarding. When I try to log in via Ip +Log in, it times out.

KageSenshi, file?

the technical name is feedback. ever heard at a concert or something when the mic is pushed up too loudly and then that loud squeal comes over the speakers?

Thanks guys :-D

frozty_sa, thank you, i called this microphony ...
the beautiful 12khz wich breaks the glasses

I'm trying to find one that return application/x-java-archive, text/x-python, kindof command ..

i see

nemind .. got it

what is the best way to get .mov files playing on fedora?

KageSenshi, ok, how did you do it?

file -i filename

oh, right

the -i option

thnx

can I remove auditd ?
what is "setroubleshoot-server" package ?

I'm trying to install mplayer from source
when i do ./configure --enable-gui

do I need stay running audit ?
tomyoodle2, ouch ... curious to know why .. make install mplayer from source ?

i get the error
http://rafb.net/p/kzNeeD20.html
cause i'm trying to learn linux
thought it would be wise to first learn the hard way to do things

ok

plus from source there should be more control

sounds that exist gcc-4.1.2-12

tomyoodle2, then try linuxfromscratch.org

?
thanks

guzu, do you think that necessary run audit ?

i'll def read lfs
but can someone help me with the current issue?

tomyoodle2, if your computer is new enough, it will be fun

definetly
sounds really good

CrocoJet, imho audit is a good thing to have

install gcc + devel libs

i'm trying to install some packages and yum complains about public keys what can i do?

thanks shramanad

repository ?

Public key for libraw1394-1.2.1-7_9.fc7.x86_64.rpm is not installed

zzoid, what repo?

where do i get the public keys from
also when i try ipw3945

zzoid, list files in /etc/yum.repo
ops .. /etc/yum.repos.d/

atrpms.repo fedora.repo fedora-updates-testing.repo livna.repo
fedora-development.repo fedora-updates.repo livna-devel.repo livna-testing.repo

wow

did you add livna repo via .rpm ?

yeah

The GUI requires PNG support, please install libpng and libpng-dev packages.

rpm -Uvh h http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm
whoops
rpm -Uvh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm

i did yum -install libpng and that went fine

rpm --import http://rpm.livna.org/RPM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY

but yum -y install libpng-dev has no match
am i doing this wrong?

tomyoodle2, yum list libpng*

thanks

http://rpm.livna.org/RPM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY: import read failed(-1).

zzoid, you can wget it then import it

Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running. Aborting.
?

tomyoodle2, service list yum-updatesd
tomyoodle2, sorry
tomyoodle2, service yum-updatesd status

guzu, i tired , not found

service: command not found

tried

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

strange ... let me look

WHOO
I got KDE to work with my sounds
I am playing SHreik 2

thank you for that
yum-updatesd (pid 2541) is running...
what should i do?

tomyoodle2, so either wait for it to finish or service yum-updatesd stop

CrocoJet, do you know ?

thnaks
thanks
X11 support required for GUI compilation.
Check "configure.log" if you do not understand why it failed.
k
that is my prob now

yum list *x11*dev* ?

why are you compiling mplayer?

thanks
so i can play .movs

just get it from the repo for what its worth

i'm trying to learn how to do it this way first
i'm new to linux

look at freashmeat.com for apps to compile
or sourceforge

sounds like a porn site
but isn't

hehehe

interesting idea anyway

freshmeat.net not freashmat

whatever

On Fedora 7, virsh doesn't seem to work when using KVM. Anyone have any tips on this?
"virsh: error: failed to connect to the hypervisor"
(which sounds pretty Xen-specific, if you ask me)

i'm installing f7 on a laptop with a 100gb hd it has a 30gb ntfs and 250mb free and one last unallocated partition
upon boot with the boot.iso file use to make a cd, it says the partition table is unreadable
and wants to init the whole drive
do i need to creat a place to put a /boot a the begining of the drive?

I am also getting the error Public key for ieee80211-kmdl-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7-1.2.16-18.fc7.x86_64.rpm is not installed
i am trying to install from atrpm

zzoid, you'll need to download or install the at gpg key

whats setting up wireless on fedora like?

zzoid, something like gpg --import http://www.atrpms.org
spheard, on fc6 it was pretty easy on my centrino based laptop

get the key from atrpms.org and then do rpm --import keyfile

spheard, had to download the binary firmware and restart

alpha255, hmmm

alpha255, i get no such file

shame you cant test it out with the live CD

zzoid, that was not an exact detail to do list more of a concept

atrpms is evil

alpha255, oh

zzoid, you'll need to read about it at the atrpms web page
zzoid, general concept is similar
zzoid, you need the gpg key to verify a package be it from red hat livnia or at roms
at roms = atrpms
zzoid, with me
zzoid, andycap pointed out you can download the key and install it from the local disk

alpha255, is that so to ensure that the package hasn't been tampered with?

zzoid, yes

alpha255, its working now thanks

zzoid, nice

how I install firefox 2

which version of fedora do you have?

whats 250mb partion for?

the Fedora-7-KDE-Live-x86_64.iso is too big to fit on a CD
:-o

possibly its that partition screwing things up

you have to put it on a dvd

elZip, for quickplay

spheard, or a bigger cd

elZip, it's hp's dvd music player

that is very lame

elZip, do you think i need to delete it?

i think it would be better if u did

elZip, why?

hand on

which version of fedora do you have

i had a small partition before that interfered with an install
summat to do with blocks

elZip, you can create partitions with another tool (likesysresccd.org) andthen custom partition layout

6

elZip, you can create partitions with another tool (like sysresccd.org) andthen custom partition layout

seriously guys, a live CD that doesnt fit on a standard CD, who maintains that?

which 7 won't work

the best tool would be gparted

only on vmwarwe
*vmware

elZip, also you can create partition within anaconda, ctrl-alt-f2 , fdisk

unable to open /dev/hda

alpha255, fdisk -l

is that not a screwed CD?

oh
that's right
f7 moved to sda

right

http://www.bobpeers.com/linux/firefox2_on_fedora_core_6

it doesn't really say it's a Live CD just Live.

thanks

but kde live should fit on 80Min 700MB cd.

I got an 80min cd here
the iso is 800mb

AndyCap, when i went to install Fedora 7 on my computer, i had to write to a cd because the iso i used was somewhere in the ballpark of 2.5 gbs...

are you using x86_64

are all distros moving towards the sda for ide drive?
s

the install iso is that yes

isn't that what he is looking for?

yes, when they get to a kernel with libata for pata drives
live distro image

AndyCap, ahhh, thanks
AndyCap, that's a pretty big change

Fedora-7-KDE-Live-x86_64.iso  831.3M

use to be scsi was sdx and ide was hdx

that's a small change.

alpha255, al is scsi now, the lib is better

the large change is the move from old ide to libata

/dev/alx for scsi right?

?

with ala being first scsi drive?

no

it's all /dev/sdx

didn't guzu just say al is scsi now
ahh, ok that makes sense

no. pay attention.
all is scsi, just a typo

ahh typo ok

can someone confirm this behaviour of yum right now http://rafb.net/p/0OqgDa50.html ?

aaah, typo
sorry

i deleted the partition and it seems to work now

it seems like something is broken

try yum upgrade

use fdisk on the tty 2
use = used

rpm -q kernel

yum upgrade return the same error. rpm -q kernel : kernel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7

rpm -q --whatprovides kernel

kernel-xen-2.6.20-2925.9.fc7 kernel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7

no biggie on the typo i just wanted to make sure i understood

ok, thought it was obvious

ayone have a workaround for if your hardware has issues with libata

No Packages marked for Update/Obsoletion. did yum clean all and yum update

during the install, is there any reason I'd want to put the boot loader on the second partition? it seems that i'd have to find another way to boot linux in a dual boot sytem?
sytem = system

alpha255, today imho it shoud work on any partition except lvm and such

aah, ok

alpha to be safe, keep it primary if possible
alpha255, to be safe, keep it primary if possible

When I see somethign like that out of yum, it just means that some dependancies aren't updated yet. Always corrects itself if you wait a bit.

Except when it comes to Xen kernels.

ASSUMING that your kernel or libraw1394 are from Fedora, and not some other repo

the /boot is a stand alone primary partition out of an lvm logical group

For that you have to wait a LOT.

alpha255, or maybe you wanna check if it works with logiclal

ok

Get a clue, dependancies are dependancies. Do you want it to not require dependancies?

If I decide I don't want the evolution-data-server, it uninstalls half of gnome. why? ...

sure no other repos seems like we going to have a xen update

I don't want stupid dependencies.

Because half of gnome depends on it?
Look up the definition of "dependancy"

On evolution?

A LOT of Gnome ties into Evolution I suspect.

I understand it rather well, thanks.

Improv, bugzilla.redhat.com

Yeah, I guess I should complain there again... sigh.

Obviously, not.

Improv, are many things that can be better, but someone has to report the issues

I just wish people wouldn't decide that compiling every possible hook into every application is a good thing.

what's the yum ( or rpm ) to show all dependencies for a particular package ?

man yum
Look for "dep"

I have, I'm having trouble finding it

As I like to say.. Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a night. Catch a man on fire, and you keep him warm for the rest of his life.

deplist ??

I remember dissatisfaction with this stuff being ages-old though...

sweet beryl-gnome is an option with f7!

OK, OK, I was not seeing it before

I just installed mplayer from source
but now how do I run it?

And why didn't you install it from rpm?

Improv, you're right, the guys who work for the distribution we use, are not perfect, but we can help, if we want to

There should be "mplayer" and "gmplayer"

but where?

/usr/bin

/usr/local/bin probably

hmm

Although if you modified PREFIX, it could be elsewhere.

mplayer from the command line

actually the make install should have printed the paths

which mplayer should find it too

If you'd install it from rpm, it would have installed gmplayer into your menus.

there is a green font mplayer in bin

"which mplayer"

ls -l on it

i think that means you can execute it
the x in rwx

Did you install the codecs too? Don't bother going any further until you do that.

not yet
i want to make sure i can even open it first

good point

Is /usr/local/bin not in the path in Fedora 7?

on both counts

http://rafb.net/p/C7VJE592.html

I don't think it's in the default path in FC7

I assume you tried typing /usr/local/bin/gmplayer

echo $PATH should give you the path
yet

I haven't done a clean install in years, so I dunno what defaults are

anyone know what the nautilus-open-terminal package does?

yum info nautilus-open-terminal

Adds a "terminal" option to the right-click menu if you're using nautilus

So, when I do "yum deplist xine | grep provider | sort -u" those are all the packages I would need to have installed for xine. Now I want the xine mp3 (and other codecs) as well

ahh

It's handier than digging through the menus to find it

Um, just do yum install xine

Khaytsus, doing a f7 install right now and f1 doesn't have help during a network install

It'll install all the dependancies. Not necessarily all the asssociated files, you might need to install some of those too.

can't, I am installing onto a non-networked machine, so I need to collect the packages

For the mp3 stuff, you'll want to add the livna.org repository

Improv, nice thanks!

See http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/

erm.... Non-networked?

Long story
Obviously not the one I am using now

Ahh, sans network, you'll just want to go prodding through that repository to find the rpms you want.

I assume Xine/etc isn't on the dvd. I've heard a lot of stuff isn't.

Tons isn't.

You have another f7 machine? Maybe you can do yum install xine and make note of the files

this is kinda nice http://wallpapoz.akbarhome.com/ changing wall paper based upon time

no need to prod.. yumdownloader --resolve

There's also something about yumutilities where you can force a download of all rpms but not install... Not really up on that though.

Due to patent issues, mp3 support (and other goodies) arn't included in Fedora proper. Livna.org's repositories have all the patent-risky packages you'll probably want.

Khaytsus, interesting
Khaytsus, kinda like your own local mirror of f7

Yep, I know that, but thanks anyway. I have xine and extras for mp3, etc installed on this one, but what I want to do is collect all the stuff for a xine install into one place, then copy to my pen drive, and install it onto my non-networked machine. So, I can get xine (proper) dependencies, as discussed, but I also need the mp3 support, which package is that ?

PinTail_b, look into livnia.org

Hello, is there a way to check for what options were used during the default Fedora vanilla kernel?

rpm.livna.org
that's the correct link
only one i in livna
kinda like no i team ; reminds me of brendan fraiser in the movie bedazzled
ukinda like no i team ; reminds me of brendan fraiser in the movie bedazzled/u

what is the difference between nfs and ftp

What package provides 'gksu'?

wait, stupid question nvm

shadowarts, udp packets with nfs

nfs can do tcp and udp.

FTP Must Die.

hmm, does base xine decode mp3s without an additional codec ?

speaking of ftp

No.

i coud use some help with my server setup

there's no real replacement for ftp yet though. perhaps ftp over ssl, but that's just sucky.

That's what I thought

What package provides 'gksu'?

nor is there a really good replacement for nfs. :8

CIFS is fine.

AndyCap, ahh, my info could be dated on nfs

what is CIFS

Not supported all that well, but still fine.

no, you're just uninformed
CIFS vs NFS is a toss-up, both have strengths and weaknesses.

http://xinehq.de/index.php/features - implies 'built-in' support for mp3

but Fedora builds mp3 out

hi, is this true that simple script executed as USER will crash linux box?
so all this linux-is-secure is nonsense?

Ah, so the version in livna has it built in
?

Linux is only as secure as the administrator makes it.

Depends on how the box is configured.
Forkbombs can make a system mostly unusable

yeap

Without per-user process limits, anyhow.

yeah
gogo ulimit
=p

isnt that like... making linux... you know.... suck?
){ :|:& };: ?

aren't you like.. you know. trolling?

not really

Societies and systems are based partly on trust.

raf256, you realize there are scripts that do the same to a windows box?
kthxbai

yes, you are. you may not know it.

Which is why you don't give random people shell access or run random scripts.

I trust all my users not to be malicious.

of course, but I hoped linux aims to be like... better? about security

How do I use "zoom" in compiz?

iirc livna builds a plugin for mp3 for xine

philTheMoron, SUPER_KEY+scroll

What is SUPER_KEY?

hello

it's fixable with per user process limits as someone mentioned

Linux can be configured to be more proactive about such matters, but every step towards security results in less convenience.

philTheMoron, the windows key

That's true in real life too, btw

its like regular key, but it rescues children

raf256, you could build the best safe in the world, but it's only as secure as its owner makes it

does anybody of you have a google-chat id and use pidgin?

felicitas, Google Talk? Aye, I do.

why if the user actually needs like 10.000 processes

Damn, yumdownloader doesn't honor the repository arguments

oh please help me configure
wfarr:

Because if the user actually might need a few hundred or thousand processes, it's nice not to have to do serious research to find out how to reenable that.

what if the user needs to fork-bomb?

anybody has tested recently unace from livna? it's unable to test one 3GiB .ace archive

felicitas, sure. one sec

felicitas - easy

ok
please query me

then he should slown down OWN processes, not root's

I'll nab the official pidgin instructions

Google Talk. Screen name. Password. Done.

On pretty much any system, if you run random scripts or if you give people access, those things can potentially malicious.

i done that
but

is nab a word?

iget error

Yes..

that sucks

alpha255, sure it is

To take.

autentification

cool

felicitas - Are you in Europe ?

it must be something with the ports

As for more useful things- you can set process limits (see /etc/security/limits.conf)

yes

you MUST use googlemail.not gmail in your user ID

There are many different approaches to how processes should work. Yours isn't unreasonable, but it's not the only way to go and Unix generally goes a different route.

or look into scheduler changes

then user can log in several times and fire few bombs

felicitas, http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24073

oh

why it takes 10 years and still we dont have a per-user instead per-process resources?

i try that

seems linux isn't right for you and doesn't support your security requirements

so somebody@gmail.com is not gonna work, it MUST be somebody@googlemail.com

PinTail_b, uh no

now go find trollfood somewhere else.

which OS would handle such tasks then

Nope. The limits aren't per-login session.. they're per user.

gmail.com works fine

It's possible to configure it on a per-user basis. It's just not been decided that your approach is the best one.

you have an interesting way of naming a discussion

go look at ErOS

f7 is sweet, lots of choices ... that's from the merge of Extras right?

it is already in kernel? how on configure it?

Take a look at the documentation on ulimits.

erm
I dont think it work that way

wfarr - depends, google is not longer allowed to call their service gmail in Europe, there is a German firm which has prior use of that name. As a result, gmail users in europe are being switched to googlemail

PinTail_b, that's interesting

PinTail_b, aye, but that doesn't mean you can't use gmail to connect to a Google Talk service

hadn't heard that

re

Depending on what exactly you want, it may only get close to what you want rather than be exactly what you want. It can't be helped - there are many different ways to do things, and catering to everyone isn't possible.

good lord it worked

felicitas, good

with the googlemail

Ye[

how could i know that

Blame the EU? =P

its not written anywhere

it's on googles page somewhere

What package provides 'gksu'?

I read it there

oh i was there
didnt see it

sweet... formatting / filesystem

easily missed, I think

try yum provides \*gksu

but im connectet now
thank you

crap, how does one get 'cut' to treat consequtive delimiters as one

-f blah-

Let me guess - use 'sed'

or -f 3,4,5

thanks then

-f 3- for 3 to the end, etc

perhaps I will patch kernel and fix thoes stupid mistakes of Torvalds

AndyCap, no matches found =/

Wow, spoke like a true... erm.... newb

I have a line with values delimited by spaces, some have multiple spaces

it really seems most reasonable to limit resources per user, not per process dont you think

-d " "

Not much you can do there, unless you normalize it first

sed it is then

" " will treat " " as two fields

why, dont you think it would be nicer to count resource usage per user (summary)?

Failing to cater to every possible design difference someone might think up isn't really a stupid mistake. In the end, decisions have to be made.

this is the most obvious desing

There's no need to be quite so hostile to everyone.

Just the arrogant and the ignorant-yet-indignant.
Although those are really the same, I suppose

There is no "most obvious design". There are many different things people might want in a system, and to assume that your priorities are everyone's would be a mistake.

you failed to providy any argument though

you may want to read this as well: https://www.linux-magazine.com/issue/66/Customizing_the_Root_Password_Window.pdf

Hmm.. I wonder how you'd set process priorities..

I'm not providing any "argument." I simply stated that your assumption that it was Torvalds "mistake" and a mistake at all was clueless.

ok, so one of 3 top obvious approaches to fair diving resources
so it is a design that one user can hang entire system and there is no kernel way to prevent him?

Per-user process limits stop forkbombs.

even with ulimit this can be worked around
no, not really

No. There is a specific way that we've mentioned to prevent it.

this way seem to not work

Like I said.. Fix it, hero.

ok
this fix doesnt work

I've done testing on this matter - it does stop them. I was curious about 4 years ago and played around with the ulimit stuff, and it works.

it doesnt, as I will prove:
even if you set memory limit of 100 mb and process limit of 150 processes (minimum for regular desktop work)

did someone say Hiro Nakamura

still the user can allocate 100*150 mb, exchausting ram

?

daikatana?

Stuff would be swapped out, but the system would still be usable.

Who seriously does fork bombs with 100 MB processes?

No. It's a per-user limit. It doesn't matter how many time the user logs on (I'm talking about limits.conf)

raf256, sorry, i like that character in the tv show... he is cool

Hard limits, not soft limits.

he stopped the bad guy

hmm, my sed skills are lacking

im playing a dvd from a movie in vlc, there is no pic, what am i missing?

Xv support in your video driver.

a guy who wants to work around ulimit
system will be usable after swapping out 15 GB? you realize ofren swap parittion is like 1 gb?

blah, blah, blah, lots of handwaving from either an Id10t or a grsec fanboi.

Hard limits work- that's it.

are you a selinux fanboi?

The system will eventually stop letting the process continue to malloc.

are your configured taht it would stop a fork bomb lunched by other user?

its the radeon driver, how do i enable that?

Yes.

What card?

ait

and OOM handler might mistake and kill a process of system of a legitimate user afair

ati

No kidding. What card?

ati 9600

care to check that statement ?

did I even mention selinux. but you walk like a duck and quack like a duck. and seems you are a duck as well.

Im not grsec "fanboi", still ist quite usable

It's good enough for most usage. Would you really want the OS to be designed with the assumption that all users are potentially hostile? Also, IIRC, those limits are per-user, not per-process.

I already checked it right after I set the limit/re-logged in.

I also, didnt even mentioed grsec...

so, it fixes your problem. use it.

I dont think it does

So if you have them set on a per-user basis, the user cannot exhaust RAM with a forkbomb with a hefty malloc in it.

fine, go make rafsec.

it also doesnt count SUMMARY
good idea
thanks for it actually

Log a bug.

get sed to replace multiple occurances of whitespace with a single space character:
sed -e 's/:space/ /'
not liking it

wasnt that supposed to be secure like "user can not harm entire system or other users"? and wasnt that one of main reasons why linux is secure and windows is insecure

heh, i have no way of playing a dvd then?

It's a matter of differential difficulty, not absolutes.

No, security was NEVER a goal of Linux.

really? O_o

Hi everyone!

Windows is relatively insecure compared to most Unices because of aspects of its design and culture, but both have vulnerabilities, and both are made worse by no sysadmin.

Sorry- what was the problem with hard limits again?

so what is goal of linux? because according to 3rd "biggest hacker" (after linux creators) its not desktop user-friendliness at all

Hi!

If you want an OS where security is the primary goal then look at OpenBSD.

this one vulnerability lasts 10 years (its from the beginning, I guess) woudlnt it be nice to fix it

The goal of Linux is to let people use their computers in a reasonably powerful, secure, and flexible way.

yeah Im going to
I think pasting 10 letter smiley == killing box is not reasonably secure

It's not really much of a vulnerability.

The goal of Linux was for Linus to get himself a shell for his university computer.

I don't think your "exploit" really would do much in a reasonably configured system.

It has achieved that I think.

hah fedorared I ment more recent goals

sometimes crash/hang anyway

And again, most systems in society are based on trust. In the hundreds of years most societies have been around, some nut can still get a weapon and run around killing people, and gosh, why don't we fix that? ... because we can't without major sacrifices that we're not willing to make.
I think those memory limits are per-user, not per-process.

any tips?

So if you say 800M memory limit, no matter how many procs they allocate, they're limited to a max of 800M

On?

When I switch users on Fedora 7, the volume control applet shows the sound as muted, and sounds no longer play. How can I fix this?

give it an actual ace archive file

there is no sacrafice at all to switch it to per-user limiting, no performence hit, simply system will be more secure here

fedorared, it's an actual archive file

* probably no noticiable performance hit

fedorared, ace

The first person to log in from the console when no one else is logged in gets the sound devices. This is for security reasons.

That sounds like a bug - it might be good to report it.
fc7 changes that, I think.

I was under impression that memory limit is per process, not summ of processes runed by user, but let me check I might be wrong

OK, why couldn't it just mute the first user's sound when you switch?

I may be wrong too. It'd be good to check.

Would that be a security risk?

It can't. There's only one physical soundcard usually.

btw, fedora core is supposed to be one of best linux shipping selinux oob right?

tyrok, because i wanna still hear my music even when my wife reads it's email

The user-switching stuff in FC7 reworked a lot of that plumbing - there may be some subtle bugs still present.
Anyhow, off to have lunch and play soccer - laters all.

your wife is cousin it?

If that's the case, is there a way to install a software mixer to fix it? 'Ya know, like let both users play sounds?

Not without a lot of work.

"even when my wife reads it's email" ?

hi warren

You can limit memory usage in limits.conf as well.

I'm open to it, if it's possible.
How do you do it?

First of all, use tab completion. I'm not going to see your messages easily if you don't address them to me :P

yes

Sorry. :P
I happen to be using my computer sideways, so z's look like n's. It's a security feature I developed so noone else can read the screen. jk

opsec, the err was so subtle (for me) that it took me ten minutes to strace _her_

The first thing we need to do is add a group to the system that users sharing audio will be a part of.

FlaILING WITH SED

Hmm.. actually, those could possible be per-session, now that I think about it. You can limit the number of sessions, though.
Hmm.. actually, those could possible be per-session, now that I think about it. You can limit the number of sessions, though.

And put everyone on it?

What is the expression for multiple whitepsace ?

http://www.rafb.net/paste

man 7 regex

upon a fresh install, should i setup the network manager to automatically run under the services section?

if you want both to have sound you need to make a group for users allowed to always have sound, by default only the first user logged in at the console gets to use the console devices; sound, video, etc.

i thought that was the default

Yep- that's by session.

Hold on a second - I'm yumming bug-buddy so I can report an error I get when I test the soundcard under GNOME...
OK

I am using sed -e 's/[:blank:]+/ /' but still get two whitepace characters showing up

you can file a request for enhancement I guess. but there's no easy way to fix it for quick user switching I think. unless one makes it possible to dynamically add a console group to people logging in or something

sorry - sed -e 's/[:blank:]+/ /'

[[:blank:]]

Can anyone help me with setting up ATI drivers with acceleration for Desktop Effects and Beryl on a laptop?

Yeah, that's fine. But the GNOME Sound Preference utility shouldn't crash when it can't get the soundcard.

http://gnome-yum.sourceforge.net/index.php ?

well, yeah, that is a bug

Orphaned in Fedora.

That is why I am asking.

echo "hello there " | sed -e 's/[[:blank:]]+/ /'

ATI's fglrx is broken on F7

WTF ???

Yeah, it pretty much crashes any GNOME utility that touches the soundcard after switching users.

I'm trying to set up the open ones

groupadd -g 311 audio

radeon driver?

Oh, and I put the *'s in.

system-config-display

Gotcha.

I'm also a complete linux noob, so more clarification would help

_Hybrid, system-config-display is the name of, and command used to run a GUI program to help configure your display

Do you have a graphical desktop up now?

Yes

I don't think the open radeon driver will help you for desktop effects

I tried setting up AIGLX, but its still not working

then you almost certainly already are using the open driver

I don't think radeon can do 3D on any mobile chipsets.

hi
does anyone here have experience of beryl?

sorta on that subject now

Don't have a permissions.d dir in /etc. Do I need to make one?

So there's no hope for running beryl/desktop effects on a mobile chipset?

Verify the path again.

ls -l | grep per inside of /etc/udev returned nothing when logged in as root.

You're right, my bad. Put it in rules.d instead.

I'm running fedora 7 on my vaio. it has a geforce go 7600. i can run desktop effects. but beryl crashes gnome

I'm assuming that's where you want me to put it
Sure thing
n
Sorry

no not really. I believe a how of how to downgrade your X server exists, but I wouldn't like to do that myself just for fglrx
