that's not bad
So that I can grab packages from pirut without worrying about
it corrupting me with i386
$150... I gotta look into that too
exclude= in yum.conf
exclude=\*.i386
http://www.vcampus.com/cciivv/lpinama/index.html
aha, found
exclude=*.i?86
x86_64
what package is ldapsearch in :|
Is what I need
tonyb2007, mozldap-tools
is there one from openldap
It took me ages to figure out that the reason XFCE wasn't
working was because of the i386 packages, lol
what problems are you having? xfce works fine for me,
x86
I'm running 64-bit install of Fedora. What happened was that
i386 xfce packages got put in
And it got confused or something
And wouldn't load any of the panel modules
ahh
malikeye, if you want to know what's on the test they charge
$249.00
come to think of it, I installed x86_64, and it was hosed, so I
went back to x86
haha
zodiac, ping
looking at the page now
is anyone here running firefox2?
from what I understand, it's not that hard of a test
me
I am in an Fedora 7 virtual machine for testing purposes
well I'm still on F6
What's your question?
malikeye, probably not.
but everytime I start firefox2 or the alpha for firefox3, it
seems to run firefox 1.5
but neither was the A+
even when I run it as ./firefox
heh
I remember walking into a Win2K test cold and passing
gotta turn off firefox 1.5
so MCP == me, which doesn't mean crap.... haha
like exit all of the browsers you have open
it'll do the same thing if you have firefox and firefox-32
also
ok
let me try
you can't run different versions at the same time
you can have multiple versions installed, just not running at
the same time
it's a real pain if you have plugins that only work in one or
the other, but what are you going to do? lol
firefox-32 is merely a slightly modified /usr/bin/firefox
script
yup
How can I unmount a floppy from terminal?
umount
umount /dev/fd0 ?
thanks.
floppy-fd0
i don't think fd0 works
oops
i lied
umount /dev/fd0
unmount wasn't found
umount
is there a tag for mount?
it's "umount"
not unmount
-n
malikeye, thanks
A floppy.. How quaint.
lol
haha
why is it that F6 doesn't have any firefox2 rpms?
why is firefox2 such a big deal to integrate into F6?
gantrixx, because you haven't upgraded to f7
cause FC6 won't see any more updates ?
argh I hate this LPI website so much
except for bugs / security
yes but Firefox2 was out before F7
Link to nowhere
I'm ordering a new computer
Hrm
and plan to upgrade to F7
Yum doesn't appear to have support for the slim login
manager
Though that's not a really a
the maintainer though FF2 didn't have enough features to
justify the maintaining of a FC6 update.
That's more of a
gantrixx, was firefox2 out before fedora 6 was released?
Let me guessa... SLIM is Slim Log In Manager
order me one too ?
no
Yep
Backronym meh
it was
Slim rocks :P
fc6 just didnt include it
fedorared, that was rhetorical :P
I got stuck with the gnome one, then removed gnome lol
And now I no longer have one
i can't install fedora 7. the installer kernel panics during
startup
xdm?
oh well, no biggie, I'll be on F7 soon enough
Whatever comes with gnome
bummer is, that dell is forcing me to buy a monitor with my
computer
XDM would work though
I am trying to use the nouveau driver but it cannot find
/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so and yum provides didn't return any
results, any ideas?
triplah_, do you have a dual core cpu?
gantrixx, I bought a headless computer from dell
recently.
from what i can tell from google is that it is part of the
mesa package and needs to be built into mesa
if you buy one of their "open source" amd machines (freeDOS)
you are forced to buy a monitor
yeah
triplah_, try 'maxcpus=1' as a parameter on bootup, if not, try
'maxcpus=0'
Oh hell
unless someone can recommend another manufacturer, I'm going to
buy a Dell this time
I'll just install GDM
I'm not going to build one this time
ok will do
bbs
my last box was a penguin computing box....and my vaccum is
quieter
you might need to edit grob.conf after install though
gantrixx will it be a laptop or a desktop?
Newegg has my PCs
desktop
InsaneJuggalo, he's ordering a monitor.
grub even
I have an Asus Laptop that does me just fine
oh
I like Asus
good point, I should upgrade my laptop
I don't use my laptop that much
i always go with toshiba for laptops
it is my guinnea pig
to be honest, I hate dealing with Dell
thinkpads ftw
dell = hell
don't even get me started on their call centers
erm.. Missed the 3
i tried ordering a laptop once from dell and the guy wanted to
sell me the most expensive one they had and wasnt that great only
had like 256mb ram and 60gb hdd
May I be helping you, do the needful!
and the guy wouldnt understand what i wanted
the start off telling hindi_accentRest assured I will do my
level best
to help you/hindi_accent
quick question... if I chose java servlet hosting
development as a thing to install when installing F7, I have a JRE,
right?
i never go any lower than 1gb on any laptop or desktop
firefox is telling me I need to download the JRE plugin
but they have the ability and authority do do nothing
JDK
which includes a JRE
doesn't the JDK include a JRE?
I needed two laptops fairly fast, but only had about half the
money. I wanted to work out something with financing at Dell but
they refused to finance me. The letter they mailed out basically
said because I had a home and car loan, I was a risk. WTF?
IBM was happy to deal with me, so Dell can blow me
Micron used to be pretty good
ok, so how do I persuade firefox to use my already-installed
JRE?
I just build my own desktops, never bought a built
desktop.
IBM's are pretty sweet machines
it seems that most of the linux web hosting
desktop computer manufacturers only want to sell very expensive
high end workstations
rugged
ibm is now lenovo which is now owned by china
Has anyone heard of a problem where
"system-config-securitylevel" doesn't ask "are you sure" and
doesn't apply the settings you made?
Yo yo head in da houuussseee
welcome to fedora YoYoHead
heh. sorry, i just love the sound of that. i amuse
myself.
ICP sucks
ferrum who cares, this is a support channel for the fedora
project so lets keep on with fedora in the topic
what does everyone think about hp desktops?
gantrixx, no issues with them.
Yes please--looking for someone with ideas on where to find
the bug already reported
Don't like the 'commodity' HP's
I also have a bug where only one printer is being shared hosting by Samba from
CUPS
business grade ones are ok
i dont like any brand pc's, I always build my desktops and if i
gotta get a laptop i always pick toshiba
a long time ago I had problems installing redhat on hps
http://youtube.com/watch?v=UR39tRbDcBk
but that was around RH3 era though
no workies
with both maxcpu=1 and 0
also tried noapic and noapm for the hell of it
malikeye, Heh, I love SB
still kernel panicking on installer startup
Okay, how would I find the version of my
'system-config-securitylevel' ?
ok, I think my problem may be related to having gij instead of a
real java vm...
Is anyone else in here having problems with ipw &
iwl3945?
It's in a package of tools, so I can't check the RPM, can
I?
I can't find an F7 tut for installing java
I have a weird problem on F7 (that I didn't have on FC6) ... If
I start up my computer with my webcam plugged, my sound card is not
detected and it doesn't work. I just have the webcam microfone as
device. If I start with webcam unplugged and then I plug it later,
all it's ok. What can I do to solve this, please?
everybody
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f7.html#java
malikeye, It was completely broken during 6.92-6.94 or
so
I can get on open networks, but not secuted
hawaiianryan, I found that one on google... it's old, so I
figured it wasn't any good
secured, even
Yanroy, You want Java for Firefox?
The normal instructions from Sun are usually OK, just unpack
everything in /opt and then refer to the "java" binary by its full
path
YoYoHead, well, I thought I installed a JDK when I originally
installed my system, but I guess it just installed the GNU stuff,
which is going to cause me tons of problems down the roat
*road
Yanroy, I finally beat it into submission on x64 ... it's not
fun.
I've done it on FC4 and FC5... I just need to remember
how
install java in /opt and then user 'alternatives' to swap which
java you
wanna use
*use
anyone know why the fedora 7 installer would kernel
panic?
i dont
is there an rpm available through yum that will install a legit
JDK?
you want a Sun JDK?
no, Sun has really stupid JDK redistribution policies
which almost match the quality of the RPMs they produce
themselves
in the short term, I just want java in my firefox, but in the
long term, I need a real (1.5, fully sun-compatible) JDK for dev
purposes
Had. Although openjdk still has non free parts.
well, OpenJDK isn't a replacement (yet) and the trademark rules
means that everyone's using IcedTea anyway
hi, all. I have a question about the automount in kde. when i
insert one cd into my cdrom, kde will give me one dialog, let me
choice which action, when I choice
rebuild it from jpackage's non free repository
Permission denied: not in active session
I wonder if 4front's OSS could be included with Fedora
eventually
why? how can I fixed it?
fedorared, I've been looking at that... it looks complex, and
contains lots of warnings about destroying your package
management
isn't fedora gonna go with pulseaudio ?
my fedora is version 7
when I use fedora 6, no this problem.
no people have this problem?
sorry my starbase came under attack. is there a way to get
FC7 install CDs onto CD-ROM (and bootable) ?
try the live CD
please.
who can give me a hand? about my problem.
personally haven't used KDE in years... not sure why you
would
meh
no fedora for me
unless anyone knows why the installer would be kernel
panicing
live CD allows for network download and install?
just can replace 7 to 6. no 7 cd or dvd.
you try noapic apci=no ?
no. boot.iso does.
not sure I follow
an image
host called boot.iso exists. burn it and boot it.
or if you prefer, boot the rescue CD "linux askmethod"
i tried noapic , i'll try the apci=no
it might be noapic=off ? it's probably just boolean so both
might work
apci=no didnt work
i'll try off
after much reading of jpackage.org, I think what I want to do
is install the sun JDK, but there doesn't seem to be a jpackage
repo for F7... do I have to do it all by hand and destroy my
package management?
here is a user supplied on
check out livan repo
livna
malikeye meh, its not working
What's the default htdocs location for the fedora httpd? I
tried putting stuff in /var/www/html/ (although I symlinked it to a
directory in my home directory) and also in /etc/httpd which is
what is specified in httpd.conf, both times I get a 403 (forbidden)
error
can you pastebin somehting ?
i really was looking forward to useing fed7
nope
All files are chmoded a+x
figured.... bummer dude
it is happening less than a second after grub loads
where is it kernel panicing ?
hmm
i actually have no idea.
the line is:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
there is something that looks like a stacktrace
looks like its happening when its probing the PCI bus
there is a way to shutoff the probe
fedorasolved.org has another way also managed using alternatives
but not the jpackage rpm
thanks. so if i burn boot.iso and and boot it, I can then
perform a network install?
correct.
fedorared, which begs the question, why doesn't fedorasolved
have an article on the proper way to install a JDK?
roger, appreciate it. will that be found in any repository where
the install DVD normally is?
check audit.log for selinux avc denials.
fedorared, I really just want yum support for this so that it
will stay updated
thanks
in the images/ dir I believe.
ok that works, thank ye kindly
not going to happen until the JDK is entirely free.
I set selinux disabled, do I need to reboot before that takes
effect?
fedorared, but jpackage has repos for FC4, 5 and 6...
So try there FC6 one, I don't think much has changed
Is there any free/open source live internet radio server for linux?
* their
icecast
thanks
What's the diff between serverRoot and documentRoot? server
root is /etc/httpd and docRoot is /var/www/html
configuration vs. documents
Ok, so that seems consistent. i have Options FollowSymLinks
on, why am I getting forbidden errors? I have selinux turned
off
check your error_log
where's that?
/var/log/httpd
symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessabible
i can follow the link just fine though
define follow
cd /var/www
cd /html
takes me to the folder in my directory
you said the symlink was to your home dir?
a folder in my homedir
make your homedir executable
chmod +x ~
ah ok
that makes sense
which for directories indicates browsebale
* browseable
gotcha
in gentoo i guess the default was browseable by all
fedora must be a little more paranoid
what's the package for php host
in apache?
php
that doesn't come by default?
ok
thanks
OK, so that makes my php page not bse shown as plain text, but
now its showing nothing, not even in source view. I know there's
issues with trying to access databases that don't exist, but
shouldn't it show me the errors?
I have to manually use mdadm to get my /var partition device
to assemble on boot. Two questions on that. Firstly, how do I get
that to happen automatically? And secondly, how do I label a RAID
partition?
label an ext2/ext3 file system with e2label
Did that.
If I have the /dev/md0 file system done with ext3, does that
work? to do e2label /dev/md0 /var?
ok, more java
hosting troubles... I installed the Sun JDK using the info
a jpackage.org, and now firefox doesn't say I'm missing the plugin
anymore (good) but nothing shows up where there should be an applet
(bad)
and it doesn't appear to be a problem with the audit thing that
fedorasolved mentions...
turn off selinux and autitd, theyre both lame
Well, selinux covers a lot of "told-ya-so's"
moeSizlak, as I just said, that doesn't seem to be the
problem. the audit log shows nothing out of the ordinary
if I disable selinux with setenforce, it takes effect system-wide
immediately, right?
Plus the plug-in is in the user space, so selinux shouldn't
really be playing a role
That's true, Yanroy, to my understanding
ok, well that didn't help
does java show on the about:plugins page?
yep, and it's the version I just installed, and it says
enabled
If Sun says the java plugin is good, then it's a site--plugin
compatibility issue, right?
hawaiianryan, sun doesn't say the plugin is good. I've been
going to sun's java
hosting test page and the spot the applet should show up in is
just blank
Oh, then the plugin is no good
so it would seem
hi, LVM help, how to move a logical volume (lv) from one volume
group (vg) to another vg ?
hawaiianryan, any suggestions on how to make it good?
you can only add or delete logical volumes from a group
So you'd have to delete it from one, and then add it to the
other (losing the data)
Yanroy, does Java itself work?
not even with some LVM snapshot.. something like that ?
well, I can run "java -version" with the expected result, but
I don't have any local java programs to test it on
I'm not familiar with it enough to say
OK
you could probably vgmerge the groups, use pvmove to move the
single LV from one PV to the other, and then use vgsplit to
separate them into two VGs again
So the jre1.6/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so file that
came with the official JRE is linked into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so ?
good Idea, thank you very much!!
You must be the doctor
If that works, I'm about to move the / partition to a different
raid array, without rebooting
ehehe
the plugin symlink points to:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.01/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
which is pretty close to what you said...
And the symlink isn't "broken", right?
nope
Then it must be a compatibility issue--it says here to try 1.5
if 1.6 doesn't work
(Java versions 1.5 and 1.6)
... 1.6 isn't backwards compatible?
for merging, the former vg must be "inactive"
my / is on that vg... :-\
It should be... but it's worth a shot
Which Fedora?
Yanroy, for FC6 you had to install compatibility packages to use
java sun plugin for mozilla
I have F7
then merge the destination VG into the VG containing /
I installed the compatibility package per instructions on
jpackage.org
Yanroy, I had just installed F7 and I didn't try it yet...
but I guess it is the same... take a look at fedorasolved.org in
browser solution
I used the newest one
also, don't forget that the initrd has the root filesystems
VG/LV name hardcoded in it
ualso, don't forget that the initrd has the root filesystems
VG/LV name hardcoded in it/u
going to try and rename the destination vg also then..
I've read all the java-related articles in the browser section
on fedorasolved... is there something in particular you think I
should look at?
btw, I'm doing all this because I'm experiencing some shitty
problems with LVM
bonnie++ cannot finish a single run
Yanroy, I don't know, sorry... I followed the fedorasolved.org
guide for FC6 and it worked perfectly. I haven't tested on F7 yet
so I can't tell you more details. Sorry about that
also, performance sucks, this should give me 160MB/sec of
thoughput, (4 sata disks, assuming 40MB/sec each.. which is very
reasonable) and is giving me 50 MB/sec
http://fedorasolved.org/browser-solutions/java-i386/
m3thos, what kind of controller?
gah, why does xchat insist on opening web pages in konqueror?
FC5's xchat used firefox...
my xchat opens links in firefox, Yanroy ... well, I don't have
konqueror installed :P lol
that is just what your default browser has right now it
seems
s/has/is/
gnome-default-applications-properties
Yanroy, i don't know about kde
software raid 5, on a dual opteron 2.6ghz
m3thos, I don't think LVM is to blame here
sata controler is a silicon image 3114
it is.. using the raid5 directly I achieve much greater
thoughput
http://thebs413.blogspot.com/2005/09/fake-raid-fraid-sucks-even-more-at.html
I fixed it. kde's component chooser had been set to "open web
pages with an acceptable program" (which is good), but the default
handler for text/html was konqueror, so I just moved firefox up the
priority list
thanks for pointing me in the right direction
linux md's software raid is very good, and very performant,
this was alos discussed before on LKML.
m3thos, I don't disagree that linux software raid is
good...
think about it.. RAIDing is not complicated nor cpu intensive,
in raid5, its just breaking writes and reads into N chunks, XOR
it.. and send it to the right device
Yes but you can't do DMA without hardware acceleration
this really is a more complicated problem than it seems, I
used to be using a 2.6.14 (old) kernel, were in a LVM with the same
4 discs, configured for stripping (raid0) I achieved 140MB/sec, on
sequential writes
m3thos, Just read that article... that guy knows more about
drives and stuff than most people learn in a lifetime of working
with them.
now, with 2.6.19, 2.6.20, I just can't achieve that
m3thos, I'm not saying there isn't a problem with your
setup... I just don't think RAID-5 belongs on anything but a
hardware controller.
in that case, the ZFS disagrees with you..
also the implementor of md raid5..
m3thos, ZFS isn't the answer to everything, either
also, this is not "fake raid" .. with a "raid driver" looking
like a "IDE controler driver"
m3thos, There's a place and time for everything... it all
depends on your needs. And it sounds like you need more performance
that you're getting
I had allready achieved that performance, I'm now with a
performance regression I want to chase down
uI had allready achieved that performance, I'm now with a
performance regression I want to chase down/u
I tried RAID-5, by the way, and FC7 intall took 2-3
hours
m3thos, Any RAID setup that uses the host CPU is
"FRAID".
On just an LVM (with three devices) it took about an hour
sounds fine
m3thos, what do you use to test performance?
dd, bonnie++ and iozone
too small for
What about hdparm ?
and eventually it panics.
fopen, fread, fwrite.. binary chunks of 100MB
its sata...
hdparm + sata = no no? It works for me
works for me too
were can I past
a simple dd of the raid5, and of the lvm lvol
hi it seems as if the latest rpm of mplayer I can find is
super old does anyone know where I could find a much newer mplayer
rpm?
(93MB/sec from the raid5, 85MB/sec from the lvm...)
each disk does 55MB/sec
:-\
i get mplayer rpms from livna
did you try Livna?
thank you
rpm.livna.org
sorry for my ignorance, not an fc user, remote administering
one
uhh how can I find fedora version? I think its fc4 but not
sure
cat /etc/fedora-release
aha thanks
FC4 is end of life.
yeah.. still a really old verison in that repo
problem is the older versions dump wav to audiodump.wav and I
can't ahve that..
maybe I could just compile hosting newer
version from source
m3thos, I get 1050MB/sec on a RAID-10 (4-drive) pretty busy
set.
that are the backends.. ? real drives
that speed, you're hitting the cache
m3thos, say again?
you might try VLC player
m3thos, yes, cache time reads
hawaiianryan, I only have access to this machine through cmd
line I just need to dump some wav files on it - mplayer I know can
do this
try this: time dd if=/dev/device of=/dev/null bs=1M
count=100
real read speed
what are you trying to do?
convert some compressed audio to wav ?
m3thos, real 0m0.530s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.478s
50MB/sec
effective
wolsni, I already have written a program in C which receives
commands on a TCP socket and runs some other programs to convert
files, problem is the version of mplayer is too old and dumps audio
to audiodump.wav in the directory it was run from
newer versions can put it in a specific folder
and converting WMAs
try a bigger amount.. to reduce the head alignment
impact
m3thos, that's on a Acrea controller
The only way I've found to convert WMAs is to dump them to
wavs then lame the wavs into mp3s
10M = .214s
(real)
on my web server, it's 0.113
but that's just a single drive
Hey guys.. anyone ever have an instance where /etc/init.d/httpd
start says started but nogo and a graceful actually starts it or
using apachectl works as well
read something like 1gig, to average.. more data, more time,
the more precise the information will be..
... that web server is a 150G 10K Raptor
anyway, that blog you said isn't really aplicable to linux
sw-raid, it assumes you using those dump-raids...
I am *so* not an expert in this, but my gut tells me there's
a bad pid file lying around and the script doesn't want to start
because of it.
s/dump/dumbs
dj_segfault, thnx .. was starting to look at that but I'm
thinking that it may not help :o(
on linux the raid writes are made to the end devices just
like any normal fs write would be.. if the disk controller supports
dma, linux will use that (depends on the controller driver
quality)
one installs dmraid for software raid, correct?
Skiingsean:I often put "set -xv" at the top of scripts in
situations like this.
that will work better than my mindless strace
How do I tell what physical partitions are in a specific logical
volume on an lvm device?
is there a package somewhere for w32 codecs
I'm doing that "vgmerge + pvmove ..".. its working..
thank you for your help!
i believe there's one at mplayer's homepage
frankg, not that is recommended for use
they even have an rpm iirc
lol
why is rpm forked so much?
not that much,... just 2 branches..
what am i going to use to load up a software raid array on an
nvidia controller?
fedora doesn't seem to have dmraid in yum, so i assume there's an
alternative
I really wish rpm and deb would "merge"
disagreements with the author
I have two questions. First of all, I installed the Java
Runtime engine and rpm says it is installed, but it is not showing
up in Firefox. Secondly, I am wanting to get Flash support running
for an AMD64 machine. Where can I find this at?
I've also heard of plugins that enable Windows apps to run in
Linux
bioeng, no flash for x86_64
bioeng, if i recall correctly, flash is only available for
firefox-32
if you're only using linux, use linux software raid, it beats
the pants of the "faked hardware-raid" that you nvidia controller
provides
bioeng, you want to install firefox-32 and then follow the
flashhowto
bioeng, available on fedorasolved.org and fedora64.org
m3thos, i already have an array set up. how will that effect
it?
bioeng, also.. the sun provided rpm suxs
i need to mostly be able to get the files off of it
:P
what I do is use the drives normally, and setup the sw-raid
ontop .. on linux
what kind of raid is it?
raid0
ouch
bioeng, You can use nswrapper in x64 - but you'll never get
java working that way - i'm using ff 32 because of it
?
no deal...
lol
i've gotten it working under debian with dmraid
you'll have to use that nvidia controller "sucky-raid"
yup
My device-mapper is crapping on boot too. Most annoyingly it's
on a drive I don't even use.
i'm getting rid of it as soon as i clear the files
off
in favor of a 1tb drive
OK done, ty
probably two 1tb drives in raid1
:P
anyways, what do i use to go about accessing my array?
By the way, the system-config-securitylevel bug I was having is
known as
system-config-securitylevel doesn't save other ports
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=240869
Ok I know this is a dumb q and what the man pages are but what
exactly does the -DSSL switch provide to httpd
how many drives do you have there?
How do I find out what physical partitions are on my
VolGroup01?
lvdisplay
2
+ an ide
(ide isn't in raid or anything)
raid1... raid0 is a big mistake.. its performance gains are only
visible in big writes/reads.. on a normal install (most of it is
mad of tiny files) it doesn't pay up
not really a mistake then.
most of my files on there are multiple gigs in size
the reason is that the system/controller has to align both disks
heads...
in that case... raid0 can really N times up the bandwith.. were
N is the number of drives
yup
ceiling is the slowest drive, or bus bandwith limit
identical 250gb drives
wd raid edition drives actually.
my only complaint is that they run extremely hot
lvdisplay doesn't, actually. I want to know if volgroup00 is my
/dev/sda1, or what. I never see this.
vgdisplay ?
i activated ntfs support and added it to the fstab according
the help page at fedora unity, however, i dont see my windows hdd
in nautilus as it said.
If the f7 kernel is freaking out because one of my logical
volumes is larger than it thinks, how do I fix that?
yarddog, which directory you mounted the partition ? look inside
that directory
/mnt/windows
yarddog, what does df -h tells.
is too small for
paste at http://rafb.net/paste
ouch
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs
its mounted according to df -h
but not in nautilus
The kernel shouldn't be trying to load /dev/sda anyway. Don't
know why it is.
yarddog, i was asking about df -h output and also fdisk -l
and also cat /etc/fstab. paste them on rafb.net/paste
http://rafb.net/p/bm6wUp38.html
http://rafb.net/p/YvIFXc58.html
http://rafb.net/p/D99Tyz79.html
all 3
and you trying to access /mnt/windows from nautilus via a normal
user or root user? also what is uname -r output ?
2.6.21-1.3228.fc7
yeah normal user
the ntfs gui had me remove the mounting of the vol for the fedora
so to read the drives
/dev/sda2 /media/sda2 ntfs-3g defaults 0 0 this is my ntfs
line inside /etc/fstab
So, how is it that my fc6 kernel doesn't s**t the bed when I
boot but f7 does?
yarddog, and i am the same kernel as you are
ok
s/am/have
banyan, is this the update f7 kernel?
anyone know how to set up kde for one click instead of
double?
banyan, why dont you think it should be loading sda?
SpinachHead, control center maybe what you looking for
It's 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7.
banyan, the pata code was re-factored in the upstream
kernel.... all pata harddrives should show up in ias sdX now i
think
My / and /boot are on what comes up as /dev/sde.
Not sda.
But when the kernel boots, it chokes on /dev/sda.
banyan, what shows up as sda?
is there a control center in kde? cant find it
too small for
banyan, if you have ide/pata controller/drives they could be
giving the sda-sdd slots
should be Control Center in the K menu
or type kcontrol into the run dialog
I checked where they end up. What used to be /dev/sda is
still /dev/sda , ditto sdb, sdc, sdd. But what used to be hda is
now sde.
banyan, so when exactly do you see a message about /dev/sda?
banyan, yes
banyan, what use to be hdX is now goingto show up as sdY... that
is known
banyan, how did you upgrade?
too small for
Which ultimately ends up with my kernel panic.
This is my upgrade story. Better get a coffee. I tried using the
dvd. Anaconda hangs after I select a keyboard, on the findrootparts
step. Tried various things at various times with that.
banyan, did you end up doing a live upgrade?
Got fed up.
My understanding was that the live CD would only do an install,
not an upgrade.
I don't wanna do that.
banyan, live.. as in.... via yum
I did a yum upgrade.
banyan, because i cant help you with that scenario sorry
yes. And basically everything works with the exception of the
kernel panic on my sda drive.
banyan, but i can say that the shift from hdX to sdY is expected
to be a problem for yum upgrades....
I suppose I could reformat sda as just an ext3.
banyan, no you need to search fedoraforum
banyan, you might need to creat the initrd
banyan, thats my best guess
Actually, the drive that gives me the issue is sda, which is
an lvm drive, with one partition one one drive.
banyan, when you installed the f7 kernel.. mkinitrd is
run.... and uses current system settings...
banyan, you need to rerun mkinitrd while booted into the newer
kernel
I don't really use it and if it's making my system choke I
would happily un-lvm it.
banyan, its not the lvm-ness
too small for
That's basically an lvm choke on /dev/sda. I am not convinced that
the problem goes beyond that.
But anyway, can I run the mkinitrd whilst in rescue mode?
How "up and running" do I need to get things for the mkinitrd to
function?
Do I need to switchroot? Do I need to have all the volumes
mounted at least?
I am having a problem with the JACK Server. I am trying to use a

cant you chroot into the os via live cd?
I had heard the comment that I may have unearthed a
dev-mapper bug.
dunno if LVM will inhibate that
I can get everything mounted. Didn't actually try
chroot.
aha
dmraid is installed!
i just have to "su -" to get to it!
sorry, bad link. Here: http://pastebin.ca/571277
You're suggesting I get / and /boot and so on mounted and in
their regular place while running the rescue disk, and then run the
mkinitrd command?
That doesn't seem to difficult.
u can chroot into the f7 OS via live CD, then mkintrd
what do your lvm's use?
what drives..
or atleast u should be able to
my one and only lvm uses /dev/sda1.
which was allways sda1 right?
yes.
your kernel trips up on "device discovery phase"
or in some "lvm discovery" phase ?
I would say so.
It's an old /var that has been abandoned.
do you need it?
can you destroy that lvm
and create a new one for instance?
Other than my ipod backup, no.
destroy LV, VG, PV, .. and create it again...
this is a will guess
I maybe can.
s/will/wild
Or even better yet, screw the lvm! It's a single partition on
one drive. I can just ext3 it.
uOr even better yet, screw the lvm! It's a single partition on one

I recently abandoned lvm in favour of raid5.
If you lose one drive or one partition on lvm, the thing is
toast.
I'm having problems with it
raid5 with lvm on top

running that "start jack" has root ?
Hey guys, I'm having issue getting the java plugin for
mozilla working in F7, I installed jre as per the installation
guides and created the symbollic link, though still it doesn't seem
to work in firefox
no
its failling on something were root access is needed
Oh, I am also having issues in gnome with sound. I don't have
any, and it says that I don't have the right gstreamer things
running or I don't have a sound card configured. I do have a sound
card configured and working. Any ideas?
(the cannot use real-time scheduling )
okay, thanks. It worked now
lvm is a nice feature.. but I'm having performance issues with
it
I'm interested in getting the latest Wine (0.9.39) and
building it from source (OK, I'm crazy, I admit it). Thing is, I
already installed Wine 0.9.36 using yum. Is it necessary or
recommended to remove the old one via yum?
It just seems silly to me that when you're talking about one
partition on one drive, it would bother to go there.
I had issues booting F7 on my duo core laptop, so I set
maxcpus=1, anyone know if there is a fix for that yet?
Sure, you can expand the volume later, but meh.
talexb_, if you want to have better package management i would
say to stick with yum
iif you setup your $PATH right.. that should not be
needed
wormz, it is registered at bugzilla keep checking it for the
latest on that issue
yes.. one partition on one volume.. that lvm isn't there doing
anything..
allways do things has simple has possible!
but *not* any simpler!
anyone got mplayerplug-in working in firefox-32?
Yeah! ext3.
firefox-32 ?
yes
no idea about that.
any ideas why my soundcard doesn't seem to connect with
gnome?
i have it working with firefox, but firefox-32 doesn't pick up
the plugin
Some little thing I need to configure? or install?
system-config-sound
KairuMaiku, are you using f7 or rawhide ?
f7
i havnt got it workin
hmm
i do have flash workin tho
flash only works in firefox-32
lol
that sounds simple! Let me try that.
elZip, I have it workin in the 32 bit but not the
64.....
flash doesn't support 64
or *bsd for that matter, which sucks
KairuMaiku, I realized that after about 2 days of the google
thing
KairuMaiku, or qnx
lol vader
it took me 5 minutes
i went 'hmm. flash doesn't support *bsd yet, so probably not 64
bit either'
lol
Anybody know how to get USB to automount in runlevel 3? Some
kind of special daemon I can install?
though i did discover that you can run multiple instances of
firefox (different versions)
by su-ing to another user
I still have a message show up saying that I don't have the
gstreamer thingies installed.
and running it under him or her
hehehehe
even though I can hear the sounds via the
system-config-soundcard.
i actually just discovered that
and it's going to be rather useful
openbysource, m3thos, Sorry, was away in #perl .. I chose to go
ahead without, and I'm now building .. if it doesn't work, I'll
just clean up and try again.
I've never used bugzilla before, can't seem to find that
bug
wormz, you can. http://bugzilla.redhat.com and
type in maxcpus
okay, I changed the config file to allow non-root users to use
real time. I retried the program and it gave me an error having to
do with the sound driver. Here is the "messages" from qjackctl:

oh yes, sure, I keep forgetting about that
yeah you 2 are OT
see this is why i like IM, it's nice for chatting
it's OT to say hi to someone?
lol
pidgin. there, we cool ?
oh ok I thought you were serious, Southern_Gentlem. But we'll
definitely take the socializing off-channel.
do u have qjackctl installed?
yes
thats from qjackctl
what notebook is of choice for fedora users?
i'm assuming any

yea? integrated video ovee nvidia?

anyone else getting disconnected from aim like mad?
Hi guys, whenever I try to play a VCD with any application,
it either crashes the application or locks everything
up
fedorared, so the notice is that big....hmm will beryl run
smoothly on it?
i have had similar probelms with jack before using muse. i
ened up fixing the problem but i cant remember how
should.
my dmesg | tail return things like this
I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2072
so then lenovo is the way to go then
well, maybe I should restart since I've been messing with sound
stuff.
this is with both of my fedora computers (laptop and
desktop)
fedorared, so who would u look at besides a lenovo?
i think i had to adjust something with jack there is a
command to open an gui interface to jack
also, the discs work fine on my DVD player (for the TV)
talking about this, why is firmware Intel 2x00bg by default
in the f7??? it use not to be open... think so, do they "opened"?
fedorared
I've seen a few flawless installations on Compaq's, and
Gateway's
policy change. they got the firmware distributable.
But I wasn't one-on-one, so I can say that everything
worked
nice move
A restart fixed it!
and what about ntfs-3g? it is by default now on F7 also, why?
because is not "reverse-engineering" (no idea)? fedorared
Yeah, why is ntfs-3g already installed?
not that it botherme... lol, but I am curius
i looked into this a long tima go, all I found was someone
asking why it was ok for ntfs-3g to be included and someone
mentioning it had been hashed out on the mailing list already and
they should check archives.
curious?
I never found the messages in the archives, I spent a good bit
searching for them.
imho, ntfs-3g is now better (tm) than the old one :-)
mhm, interesting sdodson
so, firmware distributable= open??? fedorared
How do I inform dev-mapper that there is no longer any volume
group, logical volume or physical volumes to map?

hi I want to change the font size and color of the console I
get by pressing Ctl+Alt+F1-F6. How can I do it?
have a direct link?
was it nearly complete?
CRASH69, no... i have a gmail cache... you should get
one
plop
CRASH69, you have just as much ability to search for that
topic in a mailinglist archive as i do
sdodson, half way complete I would imagine.
I have no vol groups, logical volumes or physical volumes
anymore. yet mkfs says it can't open exclusively my previously
physical volume /dev/sda1.
right, thx, sorry for disturbing you, thx
sdodson, you think it will just complete eventually?
you'll know if its screwed or not if its still burning after
10 minutes
probably not
autopsy, no
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2006-October/msg00596.html
I think this might have happenned once before, and ejecting the
disc with the CDR drive's eject button damaged the disc. I
'll let it keep running, maybe it can be salvaged.
How do I get the device mapper and lvm to get its grubby hands
off a partition I want to reformat?
probably with pvresize
pvremove
did that.
that should be enough
great, thank you
I think I have a "raid5 blocksize + ext3 blocksize problem
raid5 with 4 devices, the last two are consistently having more
data requested from them
like.. some extra 5% for each
m3thos, how the heck did you figure that out?
ahh.. now
iostat -kx
iostat 5 -kx
but I was wrong
the have extra 5% in the size of each request
but their avg is lower..
wtf...
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=210840
comment #1 probably has the best explination of what it's no longer
taboo
why the hell is the driver splitting data differently for 4
equal devices on the same controller
m3thos, if this was windows, i'd give you a smart-ass answer
to that question
which would it be?
It won't even eject.
m3thos, "That's a feature, not a bug"
ahah
if this was windows.. I would never found out about it :-p
I guess he rebooted.
heh
Hmm, lvm is not letting go of this partition.
I believe you need to vgreduce to remove the pv and then you
should be able to pvremove
I was able to pvremove.
The vol group, the logical volume, the physical volume all are
nonexistent any longer.
You did this before reducing the volume group?
I did.
Ok, so what's happening now?
mkfs /dev/sda1 fails saying that /dev/sda1 is apparently in
use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!
I removed the dmraid flag from /dev/sda...
I don't know what else to do.
maybe a reboot. bleah.
did you change the partition type?
I did.
Perhaps try partprobe
no...
since fedora i have been using sendmail to send an email to a
machine thru a cron task. i just upgraded to F7 and i am getting a
stat=deferred: 451 dyanmic ip addresses
that didn't work...
my thought is that it is something to do with an /etc/hosts
file or something
m3thos, did you give your ext3 fs an appropriate stride
size?
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Disk_Optimization
hell, nope. in xfs land, the sucker finds that out for me.. I
thought those 1990s were over...
I did kill a process that was transferring a big file from the
filesystem that used to be there...
maybe it thinks that is still active, but would that not show up
with fuser -v?
Hi
banyan, vgchange -a n youroldvg
Is there any consensus about with virtual machine is better,
Xen or Qemu?
VolGroup01: not found.
better for what?
for running virtual machines
banyan, destrying things is the easy part. you'll figure it
out.
well this sucks, my VCDs work on windows but not fedora
lots of choices.. depends on what you want to do...
meh, maybe a reboot.
again.
depends no hardware virtualization support, OS your running,
performance you need...etc..
easy of use, learning curve
I'm speaking in general terms. Does one have better hardware
support, performance, etc than the other? Or are they about the
same?
qemu is more of a processor emulator
banyan, shouldn't be necessary. umount your LVs, disable the
volgroup, pvremove the PVs to wipe the metadata, change the
parttype if you want, then reformat 'em
gone.
since fedora i have been using sendmail to send an email to a
machine thru a cron task. i just upgraded to F7 and i am getting a
stat=deferred: 451 dyanmic ip addresses
xen usually has better performance. Qemu is a whole "PC
emulator", xen is a "hypervisor"... it need to modify the OS that
will run on it to make it "Xen-aware"... and that provides better
performance and some extra features
that probably has nothing to do with the F7 upgrade and
everything to do with you using a dynamic IP address
has anyone here successfully got VCDs to play on Fedora
7?
if you have a bought in 2006 cpu, you cpu will have hardware
virt. support, and Xen will run OS'es with needing to modify
them..
i understand that, but i was hoping someone could lend me a
hand. the email is to another computer that acts as the dyndns
server
Xen is also oriented to datacenter setups, with lots of VMs..
and migrating VM between machines..etc.. its more complicated to
manage than Qemu
baddonkey99, updatedb && locate rpmnew
baddonkey99, i'm sure you'll see some new configs that you need
to deal with
a more recent alternative is KVM.. which is kind of qemu on
steroids.. faster and simpler to use than Xen
baddonkey99, maybe sendmail is one of them ;-)
there aren't benchmarks between Xen and KVM.. so which is
faster is pure speculation...
I think of kvm as like hardware virt Xen, but in the
kernel
will try thanks
its a lot simpler than Xen, Xen has a totally different
design...
Thanks for the insights.
but that is a good "simplification".. yes
I also just found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_machines
is there a processor flag (/proc/cpuinfo) that indicates hw
support for virtualization?
yes.. vmx
on intel
cpus
don't know the flag name on amd64
nope nothing new for sendmail
but you can probably google for it
svm
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Fedora7VirtQuickStart
for Secure Virtual Machine
hm. no such luck
I've found the cpu flag doesn't show up unless it's running a
xen kernel, atleast in RHEL5.
I'm on a Pentium D 820. I really doubt it has support
It does not
cat /proc/cpuinfo |grep vmx
what is vme?
Pentium D 9x0 series do
OK. Thanks, Bob-Laptop
Core2Duo T5500 and greater do also
what does the vme flag mean?
I'm not google!, donn't know
Bob-Laptop: CoreDuo T2500 support hw virt.
for intel cpus, just "cat /proc/cpuinfo|grep vmx2 ..
erm.. s/vmx2/vmx"
I did a half-assed 'upgrade' from an AMD Athlon 2500+ to this

I figured this'd be at least marginally better and it is
Intel is supposed to be introducing a second generation of
their virtualization technology.
To get really up to date I'll have to buy a motherboard, memory,
video card...
Having Intel's VT was a requirement in my new laptop as was 4
gigs of ram so I could do some Virt stuff
Problem has been that the hardware is so new much of it is not yet
supported
The classic FOSS conundrum
graphics card, wireless card, and something to do with the
Optical drive not showing up
LOL, discovered today that it has web cam built in that I did
not know about, also not supported
heheh
Bob-Laptop: what about the whole 4gb of ram
isn't part of it missing.. ?
nope
Now, I have an issue with getting mkfs to run. It says no
such device or address while trying to determine filesystem
size.
(a lot of bios have dma/device mapping problems and eat the last
0.5gig for pci mappings and other stuff)
total used free shared buffers cached
4058932 3454312 604620 0 305972 2043556
something is very weird with your setup
One would hope chipsets and bioses as new as those required for
Core2 no longer have such limitations.
so some is sucked up by the video card only
or.. you are messing everything up... :-p...
What is a good way that I can share files between my Linux
computer and my windows computer without using SMB.
one would hope.. but nope.. were I work.. all the new

gawdammit.
okay, thx
that was WAY to easy

LOL
Or that you can't find it anymore.
that was a hell of read.... basically, "the kernel is protected

for ntfs support... sdodson
They're trying to drive people to using 2003r2.
I had to do a dmsetup remove to get the little m*****f***er

I have a software raid set with three disks (raid 5) but when
I run dmraid -r I only see the last two disks. Is this
right?
well I use KDE
banyan, try dmraid -ay -v
that'll set up whatever you have
i think
It's already running.
oh
no clue
i use raid0
but I have to do an mdadm manually.
how do you restart dbus in fedora? in ubuntu there was an
init.d script that could do it
service messagebus restart
same thing different name
or
/etc/rc.d/init.d/messagebus restart
depends on your preferences
Actually, the set is listed wrong! I need to rejig that. How do
I include a third disk in an existing raid set?
thanks
mdadm --grow, no?
he's using dmraid
brb
I have to get it running with mdadm.
dmraid shows two of the volumes with the same volume label but
the first one has none.
It doesn't come up on boot and I wonder if this is why.

hd0.0
ok, but how did you work that out

well that's your problem.
how so?
grub can't read ntfs.

I've done this before with fc6
you have to point it to the windows MBR I think
there are some specific flags you have to pass to dual-boot..

run udevtrigger, but it's not setting the owner and
group
the bottom four lines specifically
if I change the name to something else, somehow it does work
tho
(name of the device)
I just added some map lines and it worked
my motorola v360 is not showing up as usb mass storage device
(connection set to usb, sd card inserted, did work on other
OSs/distros)
map (hd2) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd2)
got no idea what that does but meh
it works
ohhh right
damn you windows I forgot your trickery
you know what that does?
yes, windows can only boot from hd0
so it fakes it and makes windows happy
oh ok
oh so it swaps the drives around kinda
just ostensibly, yeah
or atleast windows thinks so
I get it
oh man... I wonder why I did this now
windows is so disgusting
uh ya
udev can be incredibly frustrating. this stuff worked fine in
the past
whats the command to burn fedora 7 to my DVD-R - im on fc6
now
wewt-_-: easiest way is to just install gnomebaker and burn
with that
my cat makes a good pullow
wewt-_-: right click on it and write image to disk?
ya that burns ISOs ?
pillow
why not just use the burn command?
ya i did that before but
im making sure it writes the iso correctly
wewt-_-: yeah. Nautilus also burns ISOs like sdodson pointed
out.
i never burned an iso on fc6
ill just try gnomebaker
or k3b
wodim
i think that'll write isos
wodim is cdrecord, so yes.
i know how to burn to CD_Rs but
i never burned to a dvd-r on fc6 ;p or an iso
shouldn't be any differnet
just making sure
should i even bother to install f7 or stick with fc6 for a while
longer?
wewt-_-: f7 has been pretty stable for me
got an ATi card?
wewt-_-: depends if your mentality is "if it isn't broke, don't
fix it" or not
ya well why not upgrade?.
can't think of any reason not to. Unless you have an ATI
card.
My raid is giving me trouble. See http://pastebin.ca/571491 for
details...
I have a three-disk raid 5 setup, but dmraid thinks it's a
two-disk mirror. It won't load on boot.
i do have a ati card but
that's not why im updating
i just am bc...i like to run the newest version lamo
ATI card will only give you 2D graphics
i dont care about graphics
i don't play any games besides one java game
Depending on the card
that is already basicly 2d
you aren't talking about what i think you are
are you?
what?
does it start with an r and end with unescape?
haha ;P
been playing for 7 years
:|
ya well
like i said..i been playing it 7 years ^^
If I've started a raid 5 disk with mdadm, does dmraid have
anything whatsoever to do with it?
banyan, no
OK, then, what would prevent a raid array from being assembled
and starting up on boot?
should I remove the metadata dmraid has on two of the three
drives?
would anyone happen to know how to use sunOS vi...i know on
nx its escape + :i but on sunOS it dosnt go into insert mode when i
do that :-o
wewt-_-: Just i, no :/
**no :
i tried escape + :insert
didn't work either..i googled around didnt my exact answer
Define "didn't work"
it says ":i not a vaild command"
As in, what happened instaed?
*Instead
I told you no :- no colon.
i like i said..it just said it was an invaild cmd
":i not a vaild command" that has a : in it.
You know, the symbol with one dot over the other?
to go into insert mode you press escape + :i
and press enter :p
no, you just press "i"
:-o
Don't listen to that.
You just press i.
i never used sunOS lol
alright ill try it later
it's the same on *nix.
wewt-_-: It's pretty much univesal.
**unversal
no it isnt
lol
well
i was doing it from a shell
on another box
Then that's a seriously messed up vi.
Lo and behold, the OS of the day is... Mac OS 9. Using
Chatzilla. Yeehaw
well it may be on an exploited box
;o
wewt-_-: Actually, maybe Vim (vi improved) has that.
ya..i tried vim
nano
pico
all that
dosnt matter
not that important
What are "%wa" and "%si" for CPU percentages in top?
I don't know - is it not in the man page?
wa is wait
And then you wait for si
k im off to install f7
why would I have 86%wa and my system reporting 100% usage for
the past 15 minutes without an appreciable amount of heat being
generated, but with a ubnch of lag?
you're doing lots of disk IO?
Dick IO
beagle?
lol
How do I turn Beagle off?
That works :/
You know that yuo actually have it?
Services, I believe.
sometimes around this time of day, I've seen the
beagle-build-index process at work
I know that it bogged me down seriously in Fedora Core 6, and
I'm glad it's not intalled be default in F7.
Back then my system was only 466 MHz, and it wouldn't even play
a video smoothly with beagle running.
what is the best way to migrate dataabses from one remote
mysql server to another?
mysqldump?
does udev act different under Xen?
Hi there! I work iwth Fedora (KDE though), and have a HP3180
scanner/printer combo.. The printer works perfectly and now I wish
to use the scanner but.. how? what program do I have to use? How to
detect / configure it, and what program can do the
scanning?
try going thru gimp
Kooka
Great! Thanks a lot
battling udev for five hours now
this is insane
it must be something with Xen. But I thought Domain-0 controlled
the devices
it should

HorizSync 31.5 - 90.0
VertRefresh 59.9 - 60.1
